Ever since playing some of my first games on the Game Boy Advance SP, I'd become fascinated in the art style and even got to the point where I was more interested in the sprite animations in Pokemon Emerald than the actual battles themselves. XD That may sound a bit goofy but I guess what I'm saying is that I'm so glad that somebody is actually making a tutorial to help people look even further into PixelArting as I have such a great interest in it. I've attempted some PixelArting myself and had a few successes amongst the many failures but a tutorial like the one that you're proposing would just be more chance to boost my skills and, I guess, open up more oppurtunities to introduce others to the world of PixelArt too. Again, thanks so much for starting this and I can't wait to see the first post. ;D

Hey, I noticed on your stretch goals you mention a few different programs. Have you heard of ASESprite? Although it's got a cheaply priced version as the latest update, the previous versions are still free and it's an awesome spriteing program. Anyways, I really can't wait for this to be out! YES! It's a program I tested and I will briefly mention it. However from what I've tried it's one of the most intuitive programs out there..it's like it's MADE for pixel art. BUT I haven't really put enough time into it to give a better analysis of it :( Also thank you!

After trying pixel art I figured out that pixel animation is literally hell. I just... I just can't.

There are a lot of shortcuts that help you speed up animation! :)

Micha frar All I know is that technique where you animate it by moving rows of pixels to the sides or up or down, which is why old animations e.g. in Streef Fighter look so "bouncy", the body parts just move seperate from one another. But to make good animation, I guess its necessary to draw each sprite seperately. Thanks for your answer btw, since Jon's new intro I check your tumblr daily.

MwieZorro drawing each sprite separately can lead to a lot of inconsistencies that need to be ironed out, so it's usually better to move parts from one sprite and smooth out the lines to make another. i.imgur.com/POMEdsF.gif For example, with the hair here I just took the default neutral hair and moved some parts around, adding pixels here and there. But then again that's not such a great example since it's so low resolution. Of course, it all depends on the motion, obviously this won't work if the animation involves any significant changes in perspective.

Zana GB "puppetry" animation works well in some games (Mario & Luigi: SS) , but in other games it's really bad ( Pokémon Black & White)

MwieZorro well, I usually start from 1 frame honestly. The only times I draw every frame individually is for frames that are very different from eachother , example : a character spinning around 360°

Drawing is an absolute necessity. If you do grafitti, i'd stick to doing pixelart grafitti to practice colours and lines

Hey! The book is actually my girlfriend's; she says that you should try CDJapan (the japanese book site) and type in pose book in the search bar. You'll find all the books there for resources! Careful about shipping though, it's very expensive the more you order.
