Pixinsight update! ver 1.8.8-6 August 2020

A new version of Pixinsight has been released, August 2020. Lets have a look at what's new and improved!
** NOTE: 3:50 in I discuss the new Adaptive Normalization. It (Adaptive Normalization) also needs to be selected in Pixel Rejection as well in the image integration window **

Thank you for the update. Was very useful, especially when it came to starnet. Some emails said, that starnet wouldn't work any more with the new update. A nother subject: Would you please make a video on mosaics in PI and trouble shooting? I could not find much, especially when the stars aren't perfect in focus etc.

Hey Christian. Thanks for tuning in. Glad it was helpful. I'll add to the list of ideas, to do a vid on mosaics as well. I haven't done much with mosaics which is one reason I've yet to do a video covering it. I'll have to shoot some data first to use!

Subframe Selector also seems to have changed. In fact it feels like it's gone back to the 1.8.8-4 style instead.

Informative video, Shawn. I'm en route to my imaging location for a month of camping and imaging. Curious if installing the updated PI overlays the existing EZ processing scripts causing them to have to be added back in? I'm usually not very eager to install/update software when out in the field.

I did t have to add them back in, they just updated when I finished. I wouldn’t fiddle around with any updates on your way out the door though!

Shawn; as always great video. Just one problem I'm having. when I open StarNet to load the RGB weight file. I have a problem. First I open Starnet then I click the wrench that opens the Starnet Preferences window. I click on the file icon on the right side, which opens The Starnet Select RGB Weights file. All that is, is a window showing the same information as File Explorer. I have no idea what to do at that point. Thank you, for your help

Yes indeed! There are updated instructions. Oddly my GPU accelerated Starnet still works. I didn't update it. That's not to say you shouldn't update via the instructions but just something I experienced.

How to include the files for the Starnet into the actual action. I am not computer savvy, but I cant copy + paste, or click + drag. Im sure there is something simple im missing on.

The Starnet update is pretty impressive at removing stars, especially with the accelerated mods with an NVidia card. I wasn't as impressed with the starmask that Starnet created. I used the same stretched image of the Veil nebula to remove stars, and create a star mask, the star mask selected a lot of the nebulosity in the image, especially the blue.

I tried the adaptive normalization on the same set I just finished doing local normalization on to compare and wow it was not remotely as good. It was way faster, but not worth it.

Interesting. I suppose it could depend on the data and severity of say gradients as example? Perhaps LN can handle more aggressive situations better.

It’s also possible I did it wrong! It gave me a warning that no normalization would be applied because I didn’t load the local normalization files. I figured I wouldn’t need them?

Thanks for this video Shawn. I've been having a real struggle with Starnet since this update, my fault though, I forgot that Starnet is not used in the Linear phase (dummy ;-)). Anyhow, before I realised my mistake & was searching around for answers I found this youtube video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZPSgoqlh9SpgNU, in Italian but switching on the auto subtitles helps. It's a work-around to use Starnet while still in the Linear processing stage. Thought it'd be great if you could make a English version of this process. Cheers

Hi - I had a look at the video and followed along. I don't speak Italian either. I could see what he was doing though, with the Pixelmath etc. I did not get the same result. I noticed he's not using current version of PI and possibly Starnet. Maybe something has changed. Will have to go over it again and see if I missed something. Seems to me though, easier to just do a quick stretch of the image and apply Starnet? But like I said I don't speak Italian so I may be missing something. Thanks for sharing this. Interesting for sure!
