I remember the days... thousands of blocks of rails... powered rails every 30th block... all without iron farms... going through 3x3 tunnels with the mineshaft-look... stations with buttons that would align the junctions with redstone in directions north, east, south or west... signs to where the tracks would lead... Then it all came down to one unbreaking, mending elytra and fireworks.

Yeah, much of the railway in my friend's server went unkempt, actually traveling through the railway, especially towards outer wing rail, become increasingly difficult. Occasionally you also get people just stole the rail and replaced it with subpar stuff that kinda work, some member think its fun, I would rather to see a complete, maintained, and well functioning railway though. Currently we can only guarantee 1500 block from spawn have somewhat functional rail, beyond that you get occasional jump, abandoned/looted station, and wrong signs.

Protip: You don't need to bother with activator rails if you're using cactus at the end of your station. The cart's destruction will dismount you safely right there.

This is an interesting venture you are doing. Reminds me of how one of my family friends sets up his minecraft world. He will find villages and will connect them using tunnels and identifying them by different coloured wools. And later into the world he will add rails. Sounds pointless when you think of the nether, but nothing is as satisfying as being able to travel straight to where you want to go, rather than having to do calculus and floor is lava to get there quicker lol. Can't wait to see how far you go with your metro. Will definitely be worth it in the end :)

I was looking forward to this part the survival guide as I've built a few rail systems in the past that were not that efficient. I'm hoping you'd cover this when you expand the rail line but I'd like to see a neat way to handle multiple stations on one line. At the moment it's a case of eject the player, and have them walk to another line to continue their journey - this isn't AFK travelling, especially if you have many locations.

the BART transit system in the san francisco bay area runs under the bay between san francisco and oakland, so water is common in a lot of places, and dripping water adds to the feel.

I use mine cart rails to connect the nodes of my nether hub. It makes moving between portals faster, and moving villagers a lot faster than boats if you don't have an ice road set up. I also don't have to have all my portals on the same Y axis for villager movement. Also I noticed you went with a straight L arrangement. If you go diagonally it will cut your travel time significantly (Pythagoras theorem at work) with only a single powered rail shifting your path occasionally to maintain speed if your diagonal section is very long. It's also fun going diagonally because the mine cart just points in that direction instead of shifting back and forth following the curves of the track.

Pix, your tool repair station inspired me to scale it up in my world. I have only four furnaces but a set of cactus and bamboo generators all the way down on y11. I have droppers depositing the items into bubble columns that take the items to the surface. I also have put in a lever that deactivates the system using a redstone torch cascade tower. It works beautifully!

Hello, Im a new minecraft player(Kinda), and i like to take things easy instead of just rushing and use teleporters with the nether portals, so i was setting up my rail system but i couldn't find a way to make it efficient. until i came across this video and the last one, that setup with the dispenser, hopper, cactus, detector and activator is absolutely wonderfull. For a fairly consistent speed (95%), need a 6:1 ratio of regular to powered rail... that is 6 regular followed by 1 powered, then 6 regular,, 1 powered, and so on. Just need redstone torches to keep them powered.

SciCraft make their piston bolts in the nether, for two benefits: 1. you mine through netherrack faster than stone, 2. travelling in the nether is 8x more efficient than in the overworld.

When digging long tunnels I use silk touch pick for all stones/iron/gold and fortune 3 pick for all XP ores (moving silk touch pick to off hand) using XP to repair silk touch pick, on the go.

The activator rail is rather pointless unless you want to go that far just for a dismount system. I set a lever next to my initiator powered rail (rail you start on) then a regular rail then a detector rail followed by 2 powered rails. If you are coming into the station the powered rails won't currently be powered causing you to stop and allowing you to dismount normally without needing the extra dispenser, redstone, redstone comparator, hopper, chest, etc. If you are leaving the station, just plop your cart on the starter powered rail and hit the lever, it will propel you over the detector rail which then activates the following powered rails just long enough to let you through without stopping and away you go to the other end of the tracks. If you find an abondoned mine, you can get a rail system as described setup pretty early, although it likely won't be able to go far unless the chests you find in your abandoned mine are loaded with powered and detector rails.

Ironic that you post this video just as I'm about to embark on my first long minecart transport system. I also have a smaller one in place which leads to an ice biome where there is a huge amount of open sea. From their I need to take a boat out to go to my nearest sea monument and a a tiny island about 6 chunks away that leads to a stronghold and end portal. So was just thinking back at my main home to set up a station where I can choose to go to either the monument or the island. My current line has a dual track design which extends well beyond the default render of 16 chunks, but this way when I reach a destination if it has 2 carts there, I send the other one back which guarantees they'll always be a cart waiting at a station even if I travel one route, and end up back at the original station if I've traveled through a nether portal or 2. I'm thinking of doing a similar system for my main lines, but these distances are huge, like nearly from one corner of a map to the opposite corner of a map, that being a fully expanded map from the cartography table. So I'm a little concerned such a monument distance will end up either despawning the carts, or worse, the carts no longer running when I get so far away so I'd end up having to run the entire line on foot to locate missing carts.

This system can be simplified by removing the activator rail, detector rail, and the redstone linking them up. When you ride a minecart and it runs into the cactus, the player is ejected from the cart but does not come into contact with the cactus, so the cactus acts as both the activator rail and the cactus. This also makes it fairly easy to set up a four-way rail station intersection by using one cactus for rail lines going in four directions.
