Last time I ordered pizza when I arrived to pick it up they had forgot to make it. No big deal I just waited 15 minutes for my pizza. My philosophy “don’t piss off the people touching your food.” Things happen and the people working these minimum paid jobs don’t deserve to be yelled at.

This is so true. I have a couple of friends that found better paying jobs with benefits in another industry during the pandemic and now refuse to go back to food service. The problem is the view in the US that "the customer is always right". That wouldn't work in Australia - we call it as we see it and no staff member is expected to put up with rudeness from a customer.

The problem with the idiom, “the customer is always right”, is it was never intended as a slogan for defining the social hierarchy of transactional relationships, but rather as a strategy for turning the occasional encounter with a dissatisfied customer into a PR success. Once the phrase started circulating amongst the public, it stopped being the solution it was intended to be and became an expectation to be exploited.

“If you don’t like it, quit and get a different job.” Half the service industry “Bet.” The fact that this many people left the industry immediately the first time they had some financial breathing room should tell you something about the feelings in the industry. There are people that work to live, they are able to cover their expenses but not have any left to put aside, or have to gradually go further in debt just to get by.

@@OH_MY_DOGGG What I was alluding to was that for years people that worked in the service industry have been saying that they were being mistreated and not properly paid. And that the condescending response of “Well if you don’t like it, get a different job!” kept getting thrown out by people that had never been in that situation. But because of having literally no safety net due to the issues of the industry many workers weren’t able to do that. And that what the stimulus checks allowed a lot of people to do was make that move.

@@OH_MY_DOGGG Job dissatisfaction among service workers has been, until very recently, written off, so I’m not sure if there are any extensive metrics for it. All I can give is my anecdotal account of twelve years in the industry, nine of that serving tables. My hometown was a pass through from a few major connectors so there were a lot of hotels and restaurants with a diverse ever changing customer base. The statistics given were very close to my experience, with most wanting to leave but constantly being one or two missed shifts away from, utilities cut off, repossession, eviction, not being able to afford medications, etc. I’m not embellishing when I say nine years straight of every month being uncertain if I’d be able to pay all my bills.

first reporting that describes exactly what happened. I probably dealt with over 100 hostile customers that first year and then I quit. But my employer didn't take it seriously at first... the pandemic and add low wage, no benefits... you hit everything perfectly. Great reporting

So glad my former boss at the restaurant I used to be a server at didn't believe that bullshit that the customer was always right. He had no issues with telling them to fuck off if they were trying to swindle him, like "My burger was horrible!" but ate all but the last bite of their burger.
