Welp, I'm groggy and congested, let's talk 2k Thrash, shall we? It was the west of times, it was the blurst of times...thee ol' turn of the century into the 00s. Powerviolence, Crust (of the non Stadium variety) and metallic HC were starting to wane a bit, and the word Thrash became a hot little slice a parlance once again. There was a new wave of super fast HC exploding out of California, Japan, Sweden and other far flung places, and the punters of the punk world often referred to it as "Bandana Thrash", referencing LARM and Heresy, two of the big influences on this wave, obviously this was confusing to people around my age at the time (early to mid 20s) who were old enough to remember the fading embers of Thrash METAL from around a decade past. Enter several crossover revivalists - Bones Brigade, DFA, Holier Than Thou? and Municipal Waste who managed to bridge the gap between Thrash and THRASH.

Fuck yeah! I saw DFA once at All Asia, it ruled. As you know, I am pals with all the Bones Brigade guys. I roadied on one of the first tours they did. There is a "tour video" that the bass player made for his college class thats uploaded on KZbin, go find it and see young me. I still LOVE Holier than Thou, that LP is so angry and despondent. I saw Municipal Waste and Toxic Holocaust a million times and always wanna defend them when people talk shit. Those dudes toured coast to coast playing VFW halls and basements. They earned that shit. Awesome video!

I'm bummed that I never got to see BB with Andrew on Vox. I'll look for that video and put a link in the description. The All Asia was such a cool and weird Boston area spot during the early 00s. Nothing better than seeing Oi or HC bands at an Asian restaurant...a tradition carried on in Salem later on, haha.

the cool thing about 'pizza' thrash and similar bands is they put the fun back into music and live shows, instead if miserable looking dudes standing around trying to be brutal. i could never quite get into death metal scene for this reason.

That's a pretty good point. I think tryhardness of it all can kind of wear on people a bit, I've definitely felt that way, but also - maybe relax. I've also met plenty jovial death metal types that like to rage out just as much as anyone else too.

As a teenager in the 80s Bay Area Thrash and Crossover were my gateway into non-mainstream music in general so Pizza Thrash hits a sweet spot for me. I love all this stuff unabashedly. Two other modernish Thrash bands I like that weren't mentioned: Normally I'm not super into techy stuff but Vektor's Voivod worship makes it work for me. Oozing Wound hit another sweet spot for me by blending Thrash/Crossover with AmRep type Noise Rock. I don't know any other band like them and they do it well. Thanks for the video. I've been really enjoying these last few videos.

Glad you've been enjoying the vids Mel! I've been trying to actually have some semblance of a work ethic during this new era. I tried getting into Vektor - they never really did it for me for one reason or another. Oozing Wound sounds very, very interesting. Another one for my ever expanding "to check out" list from Subs!

I was in my late teens/early twenties at that time and get hit hard by that scene. We just start a band with a Punk guitarplayer and a metalhead drummer. MW show us the way. And all the HxC in Belgium where i live was super SxE and serious so it was good to have a band with lighter subject. The we met Xavier from Still Holding On records (rest in peace) that put some of those bands like Bones Brigade that you mention( That became Ramming Speed and now Slashers). ANS from Texas was another one that we became friends with. OFC Hollier Than Thou? who later morphed into Annihilation Time. Tankcrimes records from the bay area play a big part in the scene too. From Belgium, Reproach was pretty big and did play that kind of fastcore. So many memories too mention, thank you

I’m somewhat out of my element in this video, because thrash in general was never my main metal subgenre. That being said, I never hated MW, but didn’t give them much of a chance when they were coming out due to the silly fashionable fanbase. Listening again years later, I think it’s fun stuff. Always respect the hell out of Dave Witte for obvious reasons. I will say too, that Crucial Unit, 9 Shocks Terror and all the Max Ward bands rule! Also I just recently picked up a DFA discography CD on discogs, good shit. Bones Brigade was a band I’d always seen the name but never listened, sounds awesome. The video title instantly made me think of my Cross Examination / Spring Break 10" on Deep Six. There was a time around 2006-2007 when I was just soaking up all the crossover / thrash metal records I could find. This was super interesting. I never got into a lot of that revival stuff. I liked Municipal Waste's 'Art of Partying' when that came out but I thought it was a joke band. And that seemed to be a popular sentiment where I was. I, like a lot of others, were surprised they kept going (AND kept Cannabis Corpse going as well?!) Though I did finally see MW a few years ago when they opened for Carcass and they were pretty good. Outside of Power Trip, I think it was Trash Talk who got the most popular doing the thrash/80's hardcore thing due to their relationship with Odd Future. On the East Coast there was Night Birds who were doing a kind of Adolescents thing and they got signed to Fat. But since you lived in FL, a video on the mid to late 90's Gainesville / No Idea scene there would be great!
@GroundZeroSalem
@GroundZeroSalem 5 ай бұрын
Yeah, I can't get behind any weed themed band other than Exit 13. MW were definitely jokey lyrically, but it looks like they took touring and playing live pretty seriously. I saw a recent interview with Bill Steer where he mentioned that their live presence was a standard difficult to compete with. I don't know if I have enough No Idea stuff to really shoot a video on. Outside of Asshole Parade, there wasn't much from the Gainesville scene that I was into. I was never a big Hot Water Music guy, and I only celebrate about 3 Pop Punk bands. Trash Talk was so huge that it's really weird that no one talks about them these days. Along with early Ceremony and Brace War, I consider them to be part of that wave of HC that started making it okay for clean cut kids in Bane hoodies to like music with Blast Beats, which came along just a bit later than some of the stuff I'm discussing here. "Amazing Violence" was the pejorative term used by some of my friends. Night Birds I tried to check out a few times but couldn't get into.

I don't like MW, never was my thing, but i respect them because they where the gateway band for so much people my age, i was a teenager during the South American Thrash revival in the mid 2000s (i live in Chile) and Municipal Waste was beloved by chilean teenagers.
