That female trumpeter is NOT Valaida Snow, who was in Europe at that time. It is one of these other great HOT-female players: Dolly Jones.

Just read Wild Women and the Blues by Denny Bryce. Oscar Micheaux was a pioneer. ❤

What a blessing that we can see the great Trixie Smith here!

You mean Dorothy Van Engle. Don't be confused by the God's Step Children opening credits which lists "a visitor" played by Trixie Smith and we see "a visitor" in the first scene. That's not Trixie who was a much older and darker black woman. Trixie's scene is the one shown in GSC's promo trailer where she's holding baby Naomi telling her mother how she's a white child. For some reason, the scene was cut and Dorothy wasn't credited so many watching the movie would think she's Trixie Smith, the "visitor".

@@devontehuntley6274 Thank you for your comment! I know that Trixie was 40 years old in 1938. I realize she isn't a visitor. She's peeling the apple at 6.20. One of the greatest blues women of all time.

@@Valery5852 Okay, so you know who she is then. That's good. I skipped through the movie trying to find her and couldn't so I figured you were mistaking her with Dorothy, which tends to be the case given the whole God's Step Children display as I noted in my comment. Years ago I came across an article written on Trixie but the picture is that of Dorothy. Bummer. Well, that's good you know otherwise. :)

@@devontehuntley6274 That's good we know who Trixie is. Here is best material written about her: Lynn Abbott & Doug Seroff. the Original Blues. The Emergence of the Blues in African American Vaudeville. University Press of Mississippi, Jackson, 2017, p.209-116.
