Pawel sails single-handed in more wind and on a chop of Puck Harbour (close to Gdansk). No paddle-steering, proa goes well balanced on all courses and follows the wind. Max speed 12+ knots.

What I love about this video is the musical harmonious motion of the Pjoa Laguna and the gentleman in it. While the Pjoa is a double ended buoyancy hull which can rock without the sudden damping, curtained, nonlinear buoyancy of a transom and a bow flare, the motion is continuous almost Then there is the flexibility of the gentleman in the boat who is phasing his motion not much different from a man riding on horseback.as the horse gallops along or canters along. It is beautiful motion which renders the soul and spirit of the gentlman in it a very happy man indeed. Congratulations. .

Great work getting the boat to sail without a paddle steering. You make it look so easy! My brother is about re-rig the 30ft Proa we built together 12 years ago and this is very inspiring. We didn’t quite get it right the first time.

12+ knots...that little pony rocks. Love the auto reverse. I have been studying catamaran boats for a long time in preparation for building my own little boat but I think I might do a proa first and anyway it's very similar to the balinese traditional jukung or perahu and I am in Bali so why not.

I once got caught (like a fool) in a small cove, with a rocky lee-shore and a stiff wind, and I had to make several rapid shunts to tack out of it. I proved to myself that this was quite doable with a well-set-up endless tackline, as is done so well here. Small proas could feasibly tack almost as fast as a monohull that must also worry about a jib or genoa.
@oj1jo5 жыл бұрын
We have found shunting useful on a river with banks overgrown with reeds :) We were leaving reeds on speed when manoevr was finished.
@chrismackay83147 жыл бұрын
You made that shunt look easy
@oj1jo7 жыл бұрын
Chris Mackay nice to hear this. Shunting is easy once rig is set up having ergonomics on mind. Paweł has to manage also brailing lines during this shunt, which normally is not needed (when full size sail is used)
@oj1jo7 жыл бұрын
Pawel has rigged smaller sail, then our regular 10.5 sqm, so one can notice how brailing lines are important for this setup to keep belly shape, even in stronger wind. Good with this sailcut is very little flapping when sheet left free.

Love the build of the akas and the leashing out to the ama. A nice dynamic of flex going on to keep the ama level (if that is what it is called on a proa?).
@oj1jo6 жыл бұрын
Micronesians has developed this brilliant solution to the problem of connecting parts of proa (vaka- main pirogue, akas to hang out an oturigger (ama) far away. They allow ama to follow it's local surface, so drag is minimized and structure is not loaded so much, which makes it lightest possible. this one is also fatigue resistant even with low-tech materials. After trying to invent something smarter I have followed this piece of genius just adding a drop of engineering needed adapt contemporary materials available to me.

there are local innovations from island to island. some designs have wave-piercing bows, and wave-skimming amas which the military would recently agree makes for higher speeds.
