As someone in the contractor business, I can tell you they're 100% right. It's full of scumbags. There are more bad ones than good ones, let's just leave it at that. I think it's because you get what you pay for, and everyone wants the job done for the lowest price. Well, if you pay the lowest price you're gonna get the hypochondriac guy, Taylor's incompetent guy, or the guy who's gonna steal your dad's tools. All the good ones expect to get paid appropriately for their work.

He does the bids, paperwork, and measures and orders windows and doors and stuff. But he'll ask us, "Hey I got this job is consists of X, how bad do you want to do that?" And then we'll tell him to either bid it high or low depending on how much it sounds like it sucks or not lol.

There are so many flakes in all industries, it’s just much more in your face with contractors because your project is generally something in your living space that you can’t help but notice. I think the other problem is that the industry is hard on the body and a lot of these guys are dealing with addiction and substance abuse from chronic pain and overwork.

When I was a kid I work for some really high-end contractors. High end like we built NFL and NBA players custom homes. I grew up learning from those guys and it was always 100% profesional. when I was a older I worked for some people similar to whom Woody is describing. Absolute skum bags, they would take early lunch and get shit faced then make up some shit about having a hard time getting supplies and then bill the customer and shit like that all the time. It's hard to know who's a fucker too, these guys will declare bankruptcy if you sue and will have a new LLC the next moth doing the same shit, it's criminal.

After having worked for a general contractor, yeah this pretty much sums it up. I tell ya man some builders are completely useless. Before I started on my renovations I contacted a local builder for a quote on the work and the lazy bastard didn't even bother turning up for the quote lol. Funny thing is he lives down the road so I know for a fact he drove past and went "Couldn't be bothered" which, if that's his attitude i'd question his workmanship. In the end, I ended up employing a handyman and 55,000 dollars later i've pretty much nearly done a full rebuild, i've had him re-roof the house, fix 4 external walls, build an entire new kitchen re-done all the flooring in the whole house new insulation, the lot. So it's the last builders loss really but idc because this handyman is good. Sometimes the communication is a bit flakey but for whatever reason that's fairly standard for handyman and trades people.
@jessdriscoll1056
@jessdriscoll1056 3 жыл бұрын
they are typically flaky because they have other jobs too, i don't know how you were paying him but pay on completion jobs typically take longer than pay through jobs because depending on how much work there is to be done the contractor needs to do other quicker jobs that will keep him afloat so the longer jobs are typically put to the side.

@@jessdriscoll1056 First guy was clearly just too lazy so i wouldn't trust his work if he was happy to drive past and ignore text and phone calls. Rule #1: When giving a Quote, get the entire scope of work and Itemize your Quote. Rule #2 (in my opinion): Do not upcharge materials, yes you had to purchase them on your time; but charging what the Material cost you will solve a whole lot of problems. When I worked for a General Contractor rather than being one, dude had a load of lumber dropped off from Dixieline...the Customer got the shipping list, and saw what the material actually cost.
@ApocalypseYesterday
@ApocalypseYesterday Жыл бұрын
If someone asked me for an itemized quote on a $5k job, I’ll write this: materials cost $0.01. Knowing how to assemble/install properly costs $4,099.99. Trust is everything in the business. My clients don’t decide how much I deserve to make, I do.

Everyone looking for a “fair price” or a “good price” has these stories. I’m probably one of the more expensive fence/handrail builders in my area, and it’s for a reason. I answer the phone, I address concerns, and I build a solid fence with a warranty that I honor. I’ve stained fences that someone else built for $1200 less than I would have charged, and I can tell you that it won’t be standing straight within 3 years. The gates will also drag and rattle apart within that time as well. Expensive does not always mean good, but cheap almost always means a bad product. If you buy a diesel truck for $1k, you shouldn’t cry about the fact that it won’t start.
