From the director of Watership Down, The Plague Dogs is a poignant, beautifully animated adaptation of another Richard Adams' best selling books with a vocal cast led by John Hurt and Christopher Benjamin.
Subjected to harrowing scientific experiments, two dogs make a flight for freedom from the animal research laboratory in which they are imprisoned. As they escape the lab they break a glass containing a deadly virus. Beyond the fences, hungry and terrified, Snitter (Hurt), a gentle Fox Terrier, and Rowf (Benjamin), an older, more cynical Labrador, soon discover that the outside world is not the haven they had hoped it to be.
Panic breaks out among the human population as news is spread that the dogs could be infected with the plague. Pursued at every turn, they are forced to retreat further into the wintry hills. They are befriended by The Tod (James Bolan) a wily but good natured fox who guides them through the rugged wilderness in their attempts to escape. Will they survive?

Definitely because this was how he wanted his story to end. The only reason the book is different is because his publishers forced him to change the ending because it was too depressing. The director who took up adapting the film said Im going to give the real ending of this book to the world and he did. But then the price was nobody at the time liked the film.

Years after watching this I know realize what the author meant. Its a beautiful movie of adventure. Those dogs had a predetermined destiny and decided to go in their own terms. They were masters of their own fate. Which is more than most people ever get to do in life. The world was mean to them but they had each other. Thats all anyone needs. A friend. A partner that will follow you anywhere, even to death. A beautiful movie with a great message of hope for change and real love for one another even when facing adversity in every direction. It was hard to watch but nonetheless, it was one of the best life changing movies I've seen

@@lunathepurpledragon5843They weren't. They had tons of crying and traumatised kids in the cinemas. And the parents had to leave early. This is a reason why the film was a flop back then. And they showed the uncut version in the cinemas. The film got cut and made for older children (12 years (at least in Germany) later. Back then they told the parents the film was for 6 years olds. I've never watchted it till yesterday because I knew it was cut so drastically. In the US they only cut one cruel scene and just took charge that it wasn't that long because children don't have a long attention span. The Germans took the film from them and cut the most cruel scenes out because it was too cruel for children. The uncut version was only to see at the cinemas and on the oldest video cassettes. But a few years ago they brought the uncut version out to buy and I found the English uncut version on KZbin (someone uploaded it). So I watched it.

okay, fucking mood. The worst part of media is when it's over and you have to come back to the real world. It's unfair that you have to, especially when you're not done mourning it and the characters. I watched both movies, Plague Dogs and Watership Down as they ran all the time on german "kid television" in the late 90s and I still want to shoot myself in the face because of it. Good times! There is a time and place for movies like this and I am sure they can be suitable for children of a certain mental stability, but they are definetly not for everyone and parents should be aware of that.

is there any chance that in the future this kind of experimenting ends? can't these products be tested on humans for money instead? ever since i found out the nature and frequency about animal experimentation i genuinely haven't been able to live normally

Why is animation considered kids stuff? They should know this, watership down, heavy metal, fantastic planet, American pop, the wall, fire and ice, dc animated movies, fritz the cat, South Park the movie, waltz with bashir, rock and rule, lightyears aka gandahar, triplets of Belleville, Starchaser, Ninja scroll, Akira, wicked city, golgo 13, fist of the North Star, princess mononoke etc are movies that say “we ain’t for kidsL

This trailer really is disturbing, both because its disturbing imagery but because its not too far from reality in terms of the real world.

I’m not sure I could bring myself to watch this one. Might be too distressing. But I like how it uses the ending Adams wanted to use (ambiguous but hopeful one), but the editor had him change it to a happy one so as not to upset the kids.
