Years after watching this I know realize what the author meant. Its a beautiful movie of adventure. Those dogs had a predetermined destiny and decided to go in their own terms. They were masters of their own fate. Which is more than most people ever get to do in life. The world was mean to them but they had each other. Thats all anyone needs. A friend. A partner that will follow you anywhere, even to death. A beautiful movie with a great message of hope for change and real love for one another even when facing adversity in every direction. It was hard to watch but nonetheless, it was one of the best life changing movies I've seen

Richard Adams was reportedly extremely pleased with the movie, actually more so than the adaptation of Watership Down, which he thought had some flaws.

Definitely because this was how he wanted his story to end. The only reason the book is different is because his publishers forced him to change the ending because it was too depressing. The director who took up adapting the film said Im going to give the real ending of this book to the world and he did. But then the price was nobody at the time liked the film.

@@vivacristorey4363 the dogs are randomly rescued from a guy on a boat who happens to find them. It comes out of left field when its clear the dogs saw nobody out in the open sea even from the shore. Although its also implied the military on the beach shot the dogs while they went out into the surf and the drowning ending is not about them losing hope out at sea but trying to keep their hopes up on their journey to the afterlife.

@@lunathepurpledragon5843They weren't. They had tons of crying and traumatised kids in the cinemas. And the parents had to leave early. This is a reason why the film was a flop back then. And they showed the uncut version in the cinemas. The film got cut and made for older children (12 years (at least in Germany) later. Back then they told the parents the film was for 6 years olds. I've never watchted it till yesterday because I knew it was cut so drastically. In the US they only cut one cruel scene and just took charge that it wasn't that long because children don't have a long attention span. The Germans took the film from them and cut the most cruel scenes out because it was too cruel for children. The uncut version was only to see at the cinemas and on the oldest video cassettes. But a few years ago they brought the uncut version out to buy and I found the English uncut version on KZbin (someone uploaded it). So I watched it.

okay, fucking mood. The worst part of media is when it's over and you have to come back to the real world. It's unfair that you have to, especially when you're not done mourning it and the characters. Felt this way about an awful (amazing) fan fiction called Butterfly that brought me to this song and to this movie. The author loves writing some dark shit, and it broke me, similarly to you.

I love how if you look on the Wikipedia page the promotional poster for this movie is like "it's the adventure of a lifetime" but everyone I know who has watched it is like "this is the most horrifying movie I have ever seen."

I watched both movies, Plague Dogs and Watership Down as they ran all the time on german "kid television" in the late 90s and I still want to shoot myself in the face because of it. Good times! There is a time and place for movies like this and I am sure they can be suitable for children of a certain mental stability, but they are definetly not for everyone and parents should be aware of that.
