Years after watching this I know realize what the author meant. Its a beautiful movie of adventure. Those dogs had a predetermined destiny and decided to go in their own terms. They were masters of their own fate. Which is more than most people ever get to do in life. The world was mean to them but they had each other. Thats all anyone needs. A friend. A partner that will follow you anywhere, even to death. A beautiful movie with a great message of hope for change and real love for one another even when facing adversity in every direction. It was hard to watch but nonetheless, it was one of the best life changing movies I've seen

Definitely because this was how he wanted his story to end. The only reason the book is different is because his publishers forced him to change the ending because it was too depressing. And they showed the uncut version in the cinemas. The film got cut and made for older children (12 years (at least in Germany) later. Back then they told the parents the film was for 6 years olds. I've never watchted it till yesterday because I knew it was cut so drastically. In the US they only cut one cruel scene and just took charge that it wasn't that long because children don't have a long attention span. The Germans took the film from them and cut the most cruel scenes out because it was too cruel for children. The uncut version was only to see at the cinemas and on the oldest video cassettes. But a few years ago they brought the uncut version out to buy and I found the English uncut version on KZbin (someone uploaded it). So I watched it.
