Poveglia Island is known as one of the darkest places in the whole world. This small island is located near Venice in Italy has seen decades of suffering and death.
A quarantine for plague victims, an asylum for the mentally ill, and finally an end of life hospital for the elderly.
Abandoned and left to decay since 1968, the whole island has been consumed by overgrowth and its crumbling buildings still hold rusty reminders of its past.
It’s said during its time as an asylum, a corrupt doctor was performing crude lobotomies on patients. He eventually claimed he was being driven insane by ghosts and jumped from the islands infamous bell tower.
A large part of the island, known as the burning fields, was used to bury and burn the bodies of plague victims, pits full of bones remain to this day and the ash from the fires is ingrained in the buildings and soil.
We venture through whats left to discover what secrets still linger on Poveglia island today…

It is so striking the apparent beauty of the place with the centuries of trauma and tragedy, suffering and death. It is a testament to the architectural and constructive integrity of the time that amidst the decay of disuse there is so much still there to wonder at. I'd love to see an overnight there with Karl. Thank you for this!

What a fascinating place! Even on an abandon island there is graffiti!!! I think some of that old equipment is industrial laundry machinery. I don't think they were making fabric, but rather the fabric on the rollers were deteriorating. Maybe?
@exohio
@exohio 8 ай бұрын
Yes, very old laundry equipment. Possibly Victorian era to very early 1900s. The first machines, with the two large chambers, those are autoclaves. Usually they use autoclaves for medical equipment, but they can be used to sterilize laundry as well. The second tumbling machines with the holes, those are steam washers. The third machine with the fabric rollers, that is an industrial steam press for linens/bed sheets, basically a steam rolling ironing machine. They still use those today actually. So, judging by the large autoclaves in the laundry department, this place was not originally an 'asylum', but a 'sanitorium'. That's when disease would have scared people enough to put their laundry in an autoclave to sterilize it. And according to Wikipedia, it says they used it 'for 'quarantine' for over 100 years, before it was turned into an asylum in 1922 (after the Spanish Flu Pandemic was over), it was an asylum up until the 1960s when it closed. I'm sure it had a very rich history, and many purposes, operating through the first and second world wars, epidemics and pandemics. Opening in the late 1700's, that's 200 years of history there and it still stands.

@@exohio I worked in industrial laundry (and also drycleaning) for 30 years. Our equipment was larger than the ones on the video and so much older it was hard to be 100% sure. Thank you for responding!

In a National Trust house I once learned that cantilevered staircases like that main one are often prone to collapse. In lots of old houses they don’t let you walk on them anymore… for good reason clearly!

You're always so respectful of the places you explore. This island warrants that doubly so which you didn't not fail to do. Cannot wait to see part 2!! Great explore, you covered a lot of territory in 2 hours. At 3:00 it made me think of a tanning bed but then I was wondering if it had been used as a sterilizing unit by putting a rack in and sterilizing sheets, etc. Something like that would be needed in any confinement/hospital type facility. I found something that looks like it but it's for food, under Industrial Food Sterilizer (wish we could paste pictures in here).

That place is gorgeous! Those big cylinders looked like something they would kill people with. That machine with the fabric on it is an ironing press i think. For ironing all the bedding. The fabric used to go all the way across the machine. Then the sheets roll thru it an is ironed. Thank you. I loved that place.

Only 20 plague victims are buried on Poveglia Island, and it was used as a navy hospital, not an asylum or an "end of life" hospital. There's no history of paranormal activity on the island, and the reason you paid extra was because the boat driver would be fined if you injured yourselves, the other drivers didn't want to take you because they didn't want the liability. The hexagonal island is artificial and was a cannon fortification. Far from thinking it's a cursed island, the descendants of the islanders are petitioning the government to let them turn it into a tourist park. Ownership is currently under debate.
