The eMac you have, I think I have a solution to it. If you take off the big cover covering all the components, you might see a wire inside the cover by the power button. There might be a wire connector near where the cable for the power button is. If it matches, plug it in, plug in the computer, press the power button then it might be able to start up.

For anyone else who has this machine and this doesn't solve it, there's a good chance that the capacitors in the machine went bad. In my 2003 eMac, nearly every single capacitor exploded, and this is apparently really common.

I have an old Windows Vista laptop that has a manual latch and I've never found it annoying because instead of having to push the latch in to open the screen, you just have to slide a little piece of plastic to the right and it opens the screen.
