Plane makes emergency crash lading on Long Island beach

DRAMATIC moment a single-engine plane piloted by Queens Assemblyman Clyde Vanel experienced an engine malfunction and had to make an emergency landing along a beach in Long Island, New York, on March 17.
No injuries were reported, according to local news.
Video recorded by Caelyn Canace, who happened to be walking her dog on the beach while on a lunch break, shows the plane landing on Long Island’s Shoreham Beach.
“You can imagine, it was not a regular walk on our beach,” Canace told Storyful. “I realized that something did not look right, and then I was thinking, oh my god this plane was going down.”
Vanel posted to Facebook, saying that after his aircraft experienced an “engine failure,” he “landed the airplane at the nearest safe location, while attempting to minimize damage to persons or property.”
“I am thankful that I was able to walk away without injury,” Vanel said.

I once had the “privilege” of having to steer my aircraft off the runway because 3 emergency vehicles decided to wait for me in center of the runway. They eventually steered off the centerline of the runway, but not after I was in the ditch. I think people don’t understand they are in the landing path of the aircraft. @@techspot871 I was flying a Long EZ on a airfield with a mandatory frequency however the controler was on another airfield. I had a nose landing gear that was not coming down. I had asked if the grass beside the runway was suitable for landing. They said no. Then he asked me where I would land, the “rescuers” were interested. I understood the question to mean “beside the runway” or “in the middle of it”. I said I would use the center of the runway. They understood in the middle lengthwise…. So that why they charged towards me running on the centreline. They wanted to get to the middle of the runway to meet me there. It was funny to see them turn to their right one after the other when in succession as they each got a full view of the situation and they realized they were charging on me. Everything was so fast so I turned to the edge of the runway after touchdown. The comedy continued as they walked around the aircraft wanting to axe the engine cowling since they were trained to shatter cowlings to make sure gas wasn’t spraying on a hot engine. This was a ridiculous idea with a Long EZ since there could not be any damage to the engine area since the engine is at the back of the aircraft way up in the air. I had to tell them to move back with their axes and analyse the situation a little. I heard that there was a lengthy debriefing next day…

The red circle isn't a physical, thing, it's just a visual effect the cameraman was using to keep the aircraft in the air until it cleared the treeline. Then he realised the plane was going to hit him, standing like a plum exactly where the pilot was aiming for, so he switched it off.

@@Yumbutteredsausage Hi Westfield. Of course, we cannot run the same emergency landing without the wheels to see the survivability difference. But, it looks to me that the wheels didn't actually absorb any vertical impact. I fly gliders and we land on skids, sometimes on pretty hard ground. This aircraft was landing as a glider. A belly landing on sand would've been pretty straight forward. The fairly sudden stop and real risk of cartwheeling (he very nearly did!), with possible fire, looks much more of a risk to me. As for keeping the landing wheels up, he wanted as little drag as possible to clear the trees and cliffs and reach the sand.

When you do this do it wheels up .This is to lower the chance of the plane flipping over.The moment the engine quits give it to the insurance company and save your butt .Fly it into the crash ....low and slow but don't stall it .The energy stored in the plane is the square of the speed .Double the speed ....four times the energy ,this is what you have to dissipate. Slow as pos on the last bit ..don't stall and do it into wind.If the wind is behind you will have 20 knots more to lose than if you're into wind in a 10 knot wind.

@@walterF205 Because the V-Tail has a history of non-professional pilots who have owned, crashed, and killed themselves in them. I’ve never flown one myself before but apparently, there are quite a few “do’s and don’ts” that must be respected when flying them. Unfortunately, the history of general aviation is littered with “occasional pilots”, typically in non-flying, well-paying professions, who purchase airplanes that are well over their piloting skill set and they either don’t take the time to build up a good foundation to operate such aircraft with a good instructor or else they don’t fly them frequently enough to maintain proper proficiency. GA is unforgiving of that sort of thing.

@@WR_CTorch So many have been killed trying to save the plane by putting the wheels down for forced landings. As soon as the engine fails the plane belongs to the insurance company. Just fly it down as far as possible. Instead of whatever caused the engine to quit, bent propeller blades and some skin abrasion they've down got all that, seawater damage, a torn-out nose gear, mangled firewall and engine mounts etc etc etc. To be honest they've probably written off their Bonanza by trying to put it on its wheels.

I agree, a little more pitch down for a little more airspeed, for a softer belly landing would have probably been better. All in all thou, it was an emergency landing that can be walked away from, and plane might even be repairable, course it is a bonanza and parts and labor are spendy spendy.

@@WR_CTorch it didn’t stall it just sank from the extra drag. Bonanza stall from my experience is pretty aggressive nose down pitch. I do think it would have been better on the airframe to have just pointed the nose down a bit, to get a little more speed and shoot for more of a controlled belly landing. With that said, we don’t know how much more beach he had, or if there was a crowd or other obstacles ahead. Any emergency, dead stick landing, off airport in a plane not set up for off airport, that you can walk away from and even potentially rebuild, is a damn good job. I do agree with you thou generally, but if I recall the bonanza POH calls for you to drop the gear just before touch down on emergency off airport landing unless it’s a water ditching.

Im a pilot myself. If that pilot is doing an engine failure landing in a soft field, he should flair enough on touch down and maintain the control colum as far back as possible to prevent the nose gear from going into the sand. This maneuver would have prevented the flip

@@AG-kb7yb In the Beechcraft (like this one, as soon as you lower the gears you loose so much airspeed due to the drag. In my opinion, whether he lowered the wheels or not really wouldn't have made a difference, he was low and slow already; having the wheels down provided a bit more cushion for the crash but stalled the plane so more vertical speed into the ground. Not putting the gear down means less cushion but slower vertical speed. Either way, it would have been a hard landing I think. You also have to remember that this guy was way task saturated trying to maintain best glide speed, trying to make the safe landing spot, and stay away from idiot beach goers that think recording the video is more important than clearing a path for this guy. This was a A+ landing given the situation.

@A G ditching is always an option. but most pilots would opt to land on a beach if given the option. The reason is that it is mostly flat and somewhat solid. It is not uncommon to see planes land on beaches where it is legal and safe to do so.

Not at the end. He should have had the gear out way sooner. The landing gear creates a lot of drag and will slow the plane down when the engine is out. You want the plane near stall speed when it touches down but the gear already out. The pilot may have been concerned about clearing that cliff and trees. I'm not a pilot but realized it would be very stressful and such a situation and even with training, pilots are likely to forget to do something. I think the pilot was trying to land on the wet sand near the water because it's more compact there.

Planes can land safely on a beach ,but not one with soft sand .I remember as a child seeing a small plane on a Kerry beach here in Ireland .It looked in perfect condition .I did not know how it got there .

looks like the landing gear is what basically broke the pilots neck now I don't know if his neck was broken or not but I'm sure if he would have had his landing gear up it would have been a much smoother Landing but he had lost so much air speed at that point the plane just kind of fell out of the sky

Saw people and had to give up on a smoother landing, is what it looks like. He starts out wide like he hoped for no obstacles lined up on the beach, then instead of just lowing the nose and entering ground effect which would have carried him past the camera operator, through the camera operator and made a fantastic save. That's what it looks like from my armchair.
