Bet they wind up putting Shotspotters (shots fired detectors) at all urban airports. Cheap insurance when risk is considered plus helps police locate where it's coming from.

@@RetiredEE Curious how coordination would work with wildlife dispersal teams. They might need to call in and tell them to ignore when they shoo the birds away or have ShotSpotter set to ignore certain sound signatures. Not sure if it can differentiate between a live load and a blank based on what caliber the wildlife team uses.

I'm seeing a concerning number of comments that claim the pilots knew from the get-go what happened, and asking why they weren't more proactive about the situation. It's more likely the pilots did not know exactly what happened when it happened - it's likely they received some sort of indication regarding pressurization, electrical, hydraulic, etc. They're about to take-off, those pilots aren't focused at all on what's happening on the ground behind their runway. And this animation doesn't put things to scale - hell, some ammunition or firearm configurations won't even show a muzzle flash, or sound loud enough to penetrate the roar of a passenger plane's engines.
@rilmar2137
@rilmar2137 Ай бұрын
That's my guess - they received an indication about an issue with some system or piece of equipment. And even if they had heard a bang, I think their mind would have gone to some more common cause - a technical fault of whatever sort, somebody shooting a firearm at a civilian airplane wouldn't be even in their top 10 guesses
@joshr96
@joshr96 Ай бұрын
Exactly. They had no idea what happened. It could have been fired some distance (who knows maybe even completely accidental and a stray bullet). There is so much sound inside the cockpit especially in some of these 737 with all the instruments buzzing and the engines. It was likely ground maintenance that spotted the bullet hole upon inspection which would match up with the about 15 min delay.
@ShaggyRogers1

@@rilmar2137 I'm not a pilot, but if I heard a sudden bang like that over the jet engines, my mind would be going to every single pressurized line and engine part that could have blown or what bolt possibly just sheered off and got sucked into somewhere it most definitely isn't supposed to be. Unless the air strip was in like Haiti or Donbass, I wouldn't even think that someone could have possibly just shot a gun at the plane.

There's no way you'd hear a gunshot coming from off the airport property. Between the sound insulation of the jet, the noise the jet is making and the fact that almost every single pilot is wearing a noise canceling headset, it's just silly to assume they had any idea what had happened until after an inspection was performed.

If the projectile was traveling >1100 feet per second it will produce a (small)sonic boom / crack sound from being supersonic. Most rifles and many handguns do this. Plus the impact could make a lot of noise

I live about a mile NW of Bachman Lake and Love Field and it is not uncommon to hear dozens of shots South of my location go off each weekend. That neighborhood is high density old apartment complexes in a bad neighborhood. Last year i recovered a .38 slug that had embedded into one of my solar panels on my roof. We are so used to it that we dont bother calling the police because they dont do anything. Our neighborhood is safe but half a mile South of us is definitely not. To be clear, i doubt someone was shooting at the plane but instead this is just a random bullet that made it’s way to the airport similar to how a falling bullet from this same area pierced my solar panel from above last year.

That kind of information could possibly be generated by people who want to make the "rough" neighborhood seem responsible rather than the deer hunters in that area, or worse, any nutjob with a long rifle who's afraid someone's gonna take it away. Of course if it's a .38, that simplifies it in my mind. That's not from any deer rifle. I think it's also important to learn the entry angle - how steep it was in descent, if it actually was in descent. (Almost had to be.) I posted elsewhere that I used to be a security guard at an oil refinery, and people would be hunting deer at all hours of the night - shooting them in an area surrounded by huge tanks full of gasoline and jet fuel. Shooting deer at 8:30(?) local time is nothing compared to what I saw.

@@Nicholas-f5 Oh yeah, it happens very close to the KMSP airport too, and they do it legally. (There's a nature preserve off the approach end of 30R, and sometimes they issue a limited number of deer licenses to cull the deer population there.) My experience, like I said, was working security at an oil refinery further down the same river, and the hunters were out all night. Others have posted that the other side of that lake right off the runway at KDAL is a popular place for illegal hunting. That's why hunting is an issue here. It happens just off the airport. It could be a stray from the hunters or from the hoods.

From a plane standpoint, the given is a loss of pressure, but they're low enough it wouldn't be explosive or require oxygen. They could circle and land. If the bullets hit critical components, it becomes riskier to takeoff but there are significant redundancies, so the plane may still be able to takeoff, circle, and land, if it's not safe to reject. Takeoff with one engine is already trained for. (Depends on what and how much is hit, but they're /mostly/ small or hidden components.)

Cockpit windows are generally multilayered, with at least one of the layers being bulletproof glass. This is meant to give it resistance against bird strikes but would probably work just as well for at least low caliber rounds. That being said, the cabin windows are likely a different story. They don't generally have to deal with the prospect of oncoming birds at several hundred miles an hour, and are less critical to keeping the plane flyable, so are likely less reinforced.

I am not sure what pilot would assume they got hit by a firearm, that said it is Texas and I have heard they like to shoot at things there, although a commercial aircraft probably isnt one of them typically. One thing that would have immediately been apparent to the pilots if a projectile did hit the front of the aircraft near the nose or cockpit is if it hit the area where the forward looking doplar radar is in the nose cone, if that was damaged the pilots would know about it immediately as at least 1 screen in the cockpit would likely be tuned to the weather radar for take off. I would have to imagine that there wouldnt be many commercial pilots these days that would take thier plane into the sky if the weather radar suddenly stopped working whether they heard a sound or not. Safety first. Still crazy stuff.

There is no evidence that the pilots knew about 'gunshots'. They asked for 'inspection'. They probably had been aboard, and pushed from the gate for 6-9 minutes when, just when they reach the runway, an alert or alarm sounded. The maintenance inspection then found the cause. A hole.

Depending upon where the plane was hit; the most likely areas from which the activity took place. 1. From the water? Does the level of the water and a boat on top of it allow such a shot? The boat would also have to leave the area quickly. There is a rowing dock nearby, the water quickly gets to shallow at the other direction. 2. Depending on how busy the area was; the shot most likely occured from George Coker Circle. The noise of planes could drown out most gun activity. 3. From the road at the end of the runway. This is the least likely location due to risk of being caught.

Depending on levels of negligence, surprisingly a lot. There are plenty of rifles that are more than capable of having effective ranges that are more than a mile. If someone were to take a precision long range rifle and have a negligent discharge with a high enough elevation, it is completely possible for that negligently discharged round to strike a person or vehicle upwards of more than a mile in any given direction. There are also just plain idiots that have negligent("accidental") discharges in exactly the wrong place all the time. Some wannabe thug waiting in the cell phone lot could have been playing around with their rifle and negligently send a round out their window directly at the runway. Is it likely? No, but it isn't like there aren't countless incidences of poorly trained officers having negligent discharges inside police stations, schools, and court houses.

According to a family on the flight, "The pilot came on just before takeoff and said that he had heard a rattling outside of the plane and that they were electing to turn back to the gate so that the mechanical team could check out the plane before we took off" (fox4news, "Southwest Airlines plane shot: Family on board describes experience"). How could the pilot know they were hit by gunfire? I think it would have been too extreme to claim they were shot just because they heard a strange noise, even if it were a loud clank.

@@-.._.-_...-_.._-..__..._.-.-.- And to be fair, that's the right way to handle it in my book. If I were a pilot and in charge of that plane and the passengers' safety, and I heard a rattling that didn't match up with anything on the tech log, I'd damn sure rather return to gate and have the mechanics check out what caused it instead of taking off and potentially having a problem in the air and having to make an emergency landing.
