I'm seeing a concerning number of comments that claim the pilots knew from the get-go what happened, and asking why they weren't more proactive about the situation. It's more likely the pilots did not know exactly what happened when it happened - it's likely they received some sort of indication regarding pressurization, electrical, hydraulic, etc. They're about to take-off, those pilots aren't focused at all on what's happening on the ground behind their runway. And this animation doesn't put things to scale - hell, some ammunition or firearm configurations won't even show a muzzle flash, or sound loud enough to penetrate the roar of a passenger plane's engines.
@rilmar2137Ай бұрын
That's my guess - they received an indication about an issue with some system or piece of equipment. And even if they had heard a bang, I think their mind would have gone to some more common cause - a technical fault of whatever sort, somebody shooting a firearm at a civilian airplane wouldn't be even in their top 10 guesses
@joshr96Ай бұрын
Exactly. They had no idea what happened. It could have been fired some distance (who knows maybe even completely accidental and a stray bullet). There is so much sound inside the cockpit especially in some of these 737 with all the instruments buzzing and the engines. It was likely ground maintenance that spotted the bullet hole upon inspection which would match up with the about 15 min delay.

There's no way you'd hear a gunshot coming from off the airport property. From a plane standpoint, the given is a loss of pressure, but they're low enough it wouldn't be explosive or require oxygen. They could circle and land. Cockpit windows are generally multilayered, with at least one of the layers being bulletproof glass. This is meant to give it resistance against bird strikes but would probably work just as well for at least low caliber rounds. That being said, the cabin windows are likely a different story. They don't generally have to deal with the prospect of oncoming birds at several hundred miles an hour, and are less critical to keeping the plane flyable, so are likely less reinforced.

I am not sure what pilot would assume they got hit by a firearm, that said it is Texas and I have heard they like to shoot at things there, although a commercial aircraft probably isnt one of them typically. One thing that would have immediately been apparent to the pilots if a projectile did hit the front of the aircraft near the nose or cockpit is if it hit the area where the forward looking doplar radar is in the nose cone, if that was damaged the pilots would know about it immediately as at least 1 screen in the cockpit would likely be tuned to the weather radar for take off. I would have to imagine that there wouldnt be many commercial pilots these days that would take thier plane into the sky if the weather radar suddenly stopped working whether they heard a sound or not. Safety first. Still crazy stuff.

There is no evidence that the pilots knew about 'gunshots'. They asked for 'inspection'. They probably had been aboard, and pushed from the gate for 6-9 minutes when, just when they reach the runway, an alert or alarm sounded. The maintenance inspection then found the cause. A hole.

Depending upon where the plane was hit; the most likely areas from which the activity took place. 1. From the water? Does the level of the water and a boat on top of it allow such a shot? The boat would also have to leave the area quickly. There is a rowing dock nearby, the water quickly gets to shallow at the other direction. 2. Depending on how busy the area was; the shot most likely occured from George Coker Circle. The noise of planes could drown out most gun activity. 3. From the road at the end of the runway. This is the least likely location due to risk of being caught.

If someone were to take a precision long range rifle and have a negligent discharge with a high enough elevation, it is completely possible for that negligently discharged round to strike a person or vehicle upwards of more than a mile in any given direction. There are also just plain idiots that have negligent("accidental") discharges in exactly the wrong place all the time. Some wannabe thug waiting in the cell phone lot could have been playing around with their rifle and negligently send a round out their window directly at the runway. Is it likely? Passengers were likely told there was a technical issue with the aircraft, which at the time was probably also what the pilots believed. It wasn't until after the inspection at the gate that they realized what had happened.
@-.._.-_...-_.._-..__..._.-.-.-Ай бұрын
According to a family on the flight, "The pilot came on just before takeoff and said that he had heard a rattling outside of the plane and that they were electing to turn back to the gate so that the mechanical team could check out the plane before we took off" (fox4news, "Southwest Airlines plane shot: Family on board describes experience"). How could the pilot know they were hit by gunfire? I think it would have been too extreme to claim they were shot just because they heard a strange noise, even if it were a loud clank.
@MarkH10Ай бұрын
100%. Those are the odds. The return to inspection revealed the cause. Your question then is, what are the odds of them not having told passengers information that no one at all had? > Answer is always 100%
@SerebroWDАй бұрын
@@-.._.-_...-_.._-..__..._.-.-.- And to be fair, that's the right way to handle it in my book. If I were a pilot and in charge of that plane and the passengers' safety, and I heard a rattling that didn't match up with anything on the tech log, I'd damn sure rather return to gate and have the mechanics check out what caused it instead of taking off and potentially having a problem in the air and having to make an emergency landing.

I am not sure how they established that they have been shot at (I haven't seen any photo of the hole nor been able to find any more details), but wouldn't you want to warn everyone about what just happened? If it was intentional, they could have shot at the next plane as well and maybe hit someone or something important? Why would you not say immediately what the issue is and keep quiet for 15 minutes? Maybe pan-pan? No pun intended.

In the run-up to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Russian authorities closed large parts of the Black Sea, the Kerch Strait, and almost the entire Sea of Azov "for missile and artillery live fire exercises." A spokesman for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry protested the Russian NOTAMs over this unprecedentedly large exercise area, which essentially obstructed international shipping and had economic consequences for Ukrainian ports such as Mariupol.[13]
