This is a takeoff gone RIGHT. Your flight crew handled a heavy class twin engine with an engine failure exactly at the most critical point in the takeoff. Secured the engine and made a quick return back for the landing. Made it look easy because they're pro's. They earned their entire career's income in ONE FLIGHT. Your flight. Kudos to your crew.
@rtbrtb_dutchy4183
@rtbrtb_dutchy4183 Жыл бұрын
They did a good job, but you are making an assumption they shut down the engine and secured it. A lower power setting might have stopped the vibration or reduced it enough to keep it running. They used the reverser on that engine. So that one in the video was still running. Could be the other one with the vibration of course.
@okflyer777
@okflyer777 Жыл бұрын
@@rtbrtb_dutchy4183 When dealing with engine issues using the term “secured” does not necessarily imply a shut down. It means putting the engine in a safe state. But yes you’re probably right this engine was likely in idle power on approach/landing. Still my major point remains: crew deserves credit here. I have 36 years now as a professional pilot and have only had an engine fail close to V1 one time. It’s a very very rare event.
@rtbrtb_dutchy4183
@rtbrtb_dutchy4183 Жыл бұрын
@@okflyer777 31 years here. In my book, “engine secure” call means a full shut down and I’m pretty sure you know this. Besides that, I agree that he was likely at a lower power setting. Had one real life engine failure during rotation. (Bird) In the beginning of my career in the 1990’s. This was in a Lear 24. We got the engine restarted in downwind, but had to keep the power below 80% due to vibration above that. We did have the occasional flame outs at high altitudes in Lear 24’s and 25’s. But that was just going down to FL280 and restart. It just meant the fuel computer needed to be changed. (Which wasn’t really a computer).

I used to work at a busy airport, and a _whole flock_ of birds _on the runway,_ and _at ground level_ was completely unheard of. If that had happened where I live, someone would be in jail right now. That could have easily taken out both engines.

I live off the end of the 11L/R of KFAT, we have the 144th FW of the California ANG and their F-15C's here. They do 3 sorties a day during the week, about half the departures are unrestricted. We have a lot of transient F-35C's and F/A-18's from NAS Lemoore as well, it's a 5-day-a-week airshow around here.

As an Aircraft engineer of 30+ years, I'm very glad I've spent the last 12~ years working on our A380s. Such a clever, well designed beast of an aircraft. Definitely have a huge soft spot for them. Aluminium overcast as we call them. It's sad they won't be producing more. Bigger twins are much more cost effective for airlines despite being a lovely aircraft to fly on. The vibrations in the turbine after the bird strike can be explained. It is a stall at several compressor blades, also called compressor stall. If the stall occurs at several blades, compressor surge occurs. This causes air to flow back from downstream compressor stages until sufficient pressure is available again. This is repeated periodically at a frequency of 5 to 30 hertz as long as the backpressure of the compressor stage remains at the value that triggered this process. And this is perceived as vibrations of the turbine.

They say (pilots) having to turn back and land with all of that unburned fuel is really dangerous. If there's time, most pilots will try and dump as much as they can but sometimes you can't do that. Landing so heavy like that blows out tires, hydraulic hoses. Landing gear can be damaged beyond repair sometimes.
