hello scott. those hot and cold water tops are there to shutt off water, in case there is water leak in the shower or sink, or even the toilette. this way they don't need to shutt off the water on the whole building.

Such a shame a few idiots in your hotel spoilt your stay Scott. Alas, it's not unique to Greece. At least you had a couple of cracking old towns and harbours to wander around though. I remember having a day trip to Chania when I was in Crete a good few years ago & I visited a Commonwealth War Graves site. I'm an ex-coal miner from an old mining village in Sunderland & I stumbled across a war grave of this 18 year old young 'un from a mining village in Northumberland. That really choked me - poor kid 😟

I lived on a small Greek island but took holidays in Crete :) Love it! The excavations at Knossos outside Heraklion are stunning.
Nice video, Scott, thanks. I had a two week holiday there about 17 years ago, love Crete. Must be more traffic now, because we hired a car and the Chania - Heraklion drive was really nice. Not as good as Chania to Elafonnisi on the south cost though, along a road winding through mountains. complete with tunnels and herds of sheep wandering around on the tarmac. Never had to change gear so many times on a two hour drive = but well worth, Elafonissi is the perhaps the beautiful beach I've ever been to, all pink sand and warm shallow water and little coves to sit in. Loved it. I'm told now it's oversold, with coach loads of people coming and going all season and restricted access.....

I live in cold but beautiful Quebec. I’ve been travelling to the Aegean every year since 2008 (except covid). First time in Kriti this very summer with my wife and teen. We felt in love with the cretan spirit and way of life ! Esa is the best beer, by the way ! Old Chania and Old Heraklion are fantastic, even though there’s a lot of people. Then we spent a whole week on the southern shore of the island (Sfakion, Loutro, Plaka, etc.) and it was paradise. A must experience… experience ! Yassas ! And… efkaristo poli. Scott ! You’re the best, but mad to have walked THE breakwater of whole Greece !

Worth mentioning that both Chania and Heraklion are working cities. Though tourism is important to Crete, it makes up just under half of the economy, with agriculture and industry making up a significant proportion. There are plenty of tourist orientated resorts east and west of both cities, with much better beaches. Neo Chora translates as “town beach” Not sure how you paid for the bus tickets Scott but assumed you didn’t try to pay using contactless on the bus itself??

Recently found this channel after you bumped into Steve Marsh returning from one of his trips - like the style and the channels, no messing and honesty - I’m retiring soon so will have the time, the problem being buses - I’m 6’7” - don’t think I’d last for long 😀. Sensible travel, - wasn’t aware of how cheap the budget airlines can be if you think laterally and are flexible on time and destination, - How you guys manage 7 hour switch overs? - And avoid Bercy Bus station if at all possible.

Hi Scott, it's Tony from Carlisle (Avanti man) Crete, love the place! I wish I knew you were coming, you could have come and stopped with us for the night! We've been back over for 6 weeks and flew back just the on the Thursday Jet2 flight back to GLA. We spend a lot of time in Greece, Crete especially Just round the corner from the El Greco is a busy street with tourist shops. Opposite the El Greco is a fantastic place for Gyros (pronounced eero) called Kalamaki (take away) Iraklio is a fantastic city, loads of great wee bars, genuine Greek eateries (where the Greeks eat). Iraklio airport is a bit, if not very dismal, but the new is due to open in around 3 years nearer to Chersonissos with a larger more modern terminal with more capacity.

Great video, enjoyed watching that, never been to these places and having seen the sights through your eyes I won't be visiting, not for me. Such a shame about the noise, people do forget hotels have other guests too. I have a few days off between now and end of the year, a citybreak calls me, not yet decided where. I think taking a leaf out of your book and looking what's sensibly prices flights wise is the way to go, any London airport will work for me. Might even be Glasgow, although in winter, perhaps not.

Another great video, Scott. I have been to Crete twice courtesy of the US Army. This was back in the mid 80's when we would fly down from Germany via C-130 for a week so we could fire our missiles. They were Air Defense missiles and needed plenty of space to fire them. Basically, we would fly down on a Wednesday and return the following Wednesday. After our aircraft recognition tests, battle drills were finished the 2nd day we would fire the missiles the 3rd day. After that we were free to explore and enjoy Crete until Tuesday for the Missile Away Party. The next morning it was back on the C-130 for a 6-hour flight back to Spangdahlem Air Base. I really enjoyed Crete and the NATO Missile Firing Installation was close to Chania so that was where the free bus took us. I spent may an evening there having a nice meal and consuming mass quantities of beer.

Spent two years of my life on Crete, a wonderful time. I spent christmas and new year of 1985 in the old harbour of Chania, Yiorgo's Bar if you know it. It's fair to say the things have changed .. I'm not at all sure for the better, there's no way on earth that any food bought there in the mid eighties would be more expensive than in the UK. No yachts there either, never mind big ones. maybe one or two fishermens boats but that was it .. loved the Raki :)

Cats on the Greek islands are always looked after. The locals usually look out for them. Many of the islands (Rhodes, Skiathos for example) have dedicated teams looking after them, and the hotels have buckets you can drop food off :) 😊

As ever really informative, always feel like you are travelling with a friend and just chatting so naturally. I've never been to Greece ,would love to, but as you said, the two towns you went to seem to be a place to not linger too long. I'd prefer somewhere a bit off the beaten track. In many ways it reminded me of Malta, not surprising as it's a Mediterranean island. I'm half Maltese would love to see you do a video in Malta. You would have loved the Maltese buses if you have never been. So sad when they got rid of them for more generic buses. I always look forward to your content here.
