A few weeks ago I was flying out of Berlin with KLM in their E195 E2, once it was time for boarding the captain came out and made an announcement letting us know that they had a birdstrike on final and needed to get an engineer from Amsterdam to inspect and clear the flight, they set a delay of 4 hours. Just like your experience, the entire crew then came out and spoke to everyone at the gate to personally answer any questions and apologize. A big thumbs up to KLM for training crew like this, it isn't much but it makes a huge difference on passengers.

I had an awful time on an Etihad flight on the way back from Australia a couple of years ago. Flew in to Amsterdam to get a connecting KLM flight to Birmingham and the minute I got to Amsterdam I felt so relieved because I knew I was going to get excellent service. Both at Schiphol airport and on the KLM flight back to the UK I felt I was treated like royalty! Honestly the service was excellent, the staff really kind and helpful. (Oh and I loved their recent TV advert about the different generations of girls being flight attendants until the last girl was actually the pilot of the KLM flight. Loved that.) Anyway, big thumbs up from me to KLM! Totally recommend them.

We’ve only flown with KLM a couple times but they were excellent. Oddly enough, we took a RyanAir flight about 2 weeks ago. Left 10 minutes late but arrived On time. Crew were good but the pilots were awesome. So funny, they kept everyone updated during the short flight, and they actually did come out and chat with passengers as they left. This was our third time with Ryanair but definitely the best experience to date.

What a strange coincidence! We're just back from holiday yesterday, and the first video I saw after switching the telly on was this! Yes, you guessed it - we just SUCCEEDED at exactly this (ok, we never actually tried to). We were KLM from Barcelona to Glasgow with a 45 minute layover in Amsterdam. The inbound flight was 35 mins late, so we missed the connection! KLM put us up in a Hilton for the night, with full board! (and we were just flying economy). Sounds great on paper for sure, but the reality was that we arrived at the hotel after dinner was finished, had little more than 4 hours sleep, then had to catch the early flight to Glasgow, leaving the hotel before breakfast even started. We did try asking them to put us on the 12:25pm flight from AMS instead, but they didn't have space. At least we could have enjoyed the breakfast then! I have no idea why they allow these super-short connections in Amsterdam - this must happen all the time - and we weren't the only people in the queue at the KLM desk getting hotel vouchers.

KLM is really amazing with calming down the passengers. (or we both had the same captain, haha) Last year I was flying Zürich-Amsterdam-Belfast and the Zürich-Amsterdam flight got delayed by 1,5 hours because they had works on one of the runways in Amsterdam. The captain came up to the gate to explain the delay. About one hour before the new departure time he started boarding and on board he walked through the whole cabin to answer any kind of questions but was ready in case they will get a departure time frame from another delayed flight. Before we got into Amsterdam, he announced all the missed connections (and believe me, there were a lot!) and nobody was complaining. Finally I still got my Dutch Fries and a Croquette, because the plane to Belfast came from Germany and had the same problem as the one from Zürich and was delayed by over an hour.

I am Dutch myself, I think partly because of the Dutch communication culture and that hierarchy is neglected in the Netherlands, the Dutch are very open to the outside world. My flight from Cork was cancelled last year, while the new KLM staff and pilot were also in the waiting room. Then it turned out that the KLM plane was in Shannon and we had to go there by bus. The KLM pilot and staff were very friendly and helpful. He explained that because of the storm the plane could not fly to Cork. But both the staff and the pilot reassured everyone. Because many also had a connecting flight in Amsterdam. However, after three hours of waiting there was still no bus, whereupon the pilot said, the bus driver is probably still in the pub? That was an icebreaker and everyone had to laugh. But in the meantime the KLM staff called Schiphol to arrange hotels for the passengers. The flight from Shannon turned out to be half full, where the pilot and staff gave all passengers extra drinks and snacks. After all, there was too much on board. The pilot also came by personally during the flight to offer his apologies and to ask if the staff needed to arrange anything.

KLM have built up a great network of flights from the UK. Virtually every UK airport has KLM flights, only a tiny fraction have our own flag carrier (BA) operating from them. My experience is KLM are very good at connections and I think this is possibly why. I know last year when I transferred there on a short connection they were very pro active in flagging passengers on certain connecting flights take priority and get taken to the front of the queue to ensure they don't miss the connection. So I feel far more confident booking connecting flights with KLM than I would BA, for example.

Every update was given by the captain in the cabin on the intercom and the personally through the cabin in case some didn't understand the weight issue. Top marks to Easyjet

KLM, and other carriers, put effort into training their crews to make sure they offer their passengers a pleasant flight and that's a sword that cuts both ways. The crew does what the company wants them to do, but they understand the "why?" and feel supported, which results in job satisfaction* and them enjoying the process, even if they have to eat humble pie with regard to the passengers at times. The colliery is this costs KLM money, which is reflected in their ticket prices. Where as, I imagine, at places like Ryan Air, training consists of telling the crews what they want to have happen, but leaving it to their own initiative to make it happen (i.e. only communicating the objectives, but not the tools; because they're too cheap to pay the consultants who can actually do this) *AND* blaming the crews if things get out of hand. Two different business models: "value for money" vs. "what do you want for a few lousy bucks?" (*): *AND* job retention, which is really important. You can have the best hirers and a competitive salary package, but if people start to feel they're in a dead end and you don't really care about them, they're *gone*.

First two connections (Frankfurt to Helsinki and Helsinki to Singapore) were flawless but final connection flight (Singapore to Sydney) was delayed 14 hours by Qantas. Once I landed in Sydney I filed an EU261 claim with Qantas and the following day got approved for €600 plus reimbursement of hotel and ground transport

Later I travelled by train from Amsterdam to Berlin, the train was late but not late enough to get any money back from DB. The homeward journey was with BA from Berlin to Heathrow, this flight was on time, but I still had problems at Berlin airport. With the flight being silly O'clock in the morning (before sparrow breakfast time) I stayed the night before at an airport hotel. Got off the train and into the terminal to buy a bite to eat, couldn't find the hotel. Eventually I asked at an information desk, and was told (scolded like a child) that the hotels are at the front of the building, where do I think! So I said I'd arrived from the railway station which is situated under the terminal building, which way to the front? ... rude cow (sorry for the language) wasn't helpful at all. With 4 directions from which to select I eventually found the right one.

It's interesting how airlines buy aircraft. KLM, previously a loyal Douglas customer, switched to Boeing when the 747 arrived. Now KLM is changing over to Airbus.
@lws7394Ай бұрын
@@alexmcwhirter6611 There are many reasons why KLM would want to switch to Airbus. One are the issues with 777 and 737 that is in the news, which also lead to production/delivery issues at Boeing . second KLM is part of AirFranceKLM and AF uses mostly Airbus. This gives possibilities of scale efficiency/synergy in training staff, maintenance and spare parts . Furthermore are cleaner, more efficient planes needed to comply with more stringent EU regulations. Another is that with the war in Ukraine European carriers have to bypass Ukraine and Russian airspace to flights to Asia and Australia. The extra distance are at the limits of current Boeing planes , but Airbus planes would have enough range for that..
@alexmcwhirter6611Ай бұрын
@@lws7394 Indeed. I hear what you say but Boeing aircraft are quite capable of flying Europe-Japan non-stop ...just check the schedules with NH and JL. Even Europe-China there's VS flying London-Shanghai non-stop with 787. As for Europe-Australia check BA which makes an en route stop in S'pore and deploys 777-300ER.
@lws7394Ай бұрын
@@alexmcwhirter6611 Well depending on the type 787s can fly between 11k and 15k km. The distance Amsterdam to Tokyo via Russian air space is a good 9000 km. I can't find the detour distance from Amsterdam , but Helsinki to Seoul is 4000km extra. So the distance becomes critical , esp. when a flight might have unfavourable head winds ...
@alexmcwhirter6611Ай бұрын
@@lws7394 Indeed. I mean BA uses 787s for Tokyo and the two Japanese airlines use 777-300ERs for Europe. (A year or so ago when demand was limited there was ANA using 787s for LHR-HND).

Others were too that were heading for different connections to me. Also if you book economy you aren't guaranteed that your cabin bag won't end up in the hold. I got the sms from them saying flight was full, so please book cabin bag in. I did on the outbound journey, which meant having to queue at the check in desk despite having already checked in online. Hi Scott, I like KLM too. My fave airline. Never really had any issues with them except - guess what - my luggage was lost between Schipol and Manchester. However, it was delivered to my home the next day.

My wife and I travelled to Gram Canaria in sept and we were delayed by an hour and then pilot of the TUI flight came out and announced a faulty indicator for one of the engines and explained everything that was being done by the ground staff, turned out it was a faulty bulb.

I have just used EU 261 after my BA flight was cancelled from Glasgow to Heathrow and we were put on a later flight to Heathrow and redirected to Bangkok landing 2.5 hours late resulting in £260 compensation for each of us, happy days plus expenses for food.. going forward, I will be looking for flights that maybe cancelled 😊

KLM out of or in to Amsterdam seems to run like clockwork. It’s a really good well-run airline.

The worst is "Your fight has been delayed due to late arrival of inbound aircraft" I'm on the inbound aircraft!!! Seriously, I've always had good service from KLM
