Wow. In my middle forties I began doing marathons;but the good Lord didn't give me the body of a runner; so I walked the 26.2 miles. Two London marathons and two in Dublin. 7 hours on my first one, but by 2002 had got it down to five + hours. Watching the pain on your face brought so many memories back. I'm.lying in bed watching this and my feet are throbbing in sympathy!

Did that Bridge of Orchy to Kinlochleven section a few years ago, and the Devil’s Staircase and descent into Kinlochleven were indeed hard, especially after being battered by horizontal rain on Rannoch moor!

Great video, Scott. Walked the WHW witn my son-in-law back in 2012, south to north and we didn't find Devil's staircase too bad but I live live in hilly North Wales and spent a lot of time in Snowdonia and in in 2009 the trekked to Everest Base Camp. Fabulous effort covering that distance in one go. Thanks fro for bringing it to us 🙃🙂❤
@phillloyd52332 ай бұрын
I did the WHW (South to North) in 2007. Did it in 6 stages. The hardest section for me was the slog along the eastern shore of Loch Lomond, although I completely agree with you about the walking surfaces! I took every opportunity I could to walk on lovely soft grass! Runners aside it does look busier these days, but I am so proud I did it. I look back on it with more fondness now, than I could appreciate at the time.

Oh Scott I could feel the pain in your feet! It brought back memories of my walking days (brings tears now as I can no longer do them). I walked Samaria Gorge in Crete with Ramblers Holidays and was determined to get to the sea first as there were no ascents to make be short of breath. Not a long as your walk as about 11.5 miles, but along a river bed, and the stones and boulders made up the path plus boardwalks across the river about 40 times. I made it to the end - the sea- but my feet were like you describe, SO SORE! It was a most beautiful walk and day though, and I am so glad I did it. Go in April/May when the flowers on the nearby plateau are so beautiful. Thank you for putting yourself through this walk, but I am sure you did not regret it, even if you would not do it again. Next item on the bucket list!

Having completed the West Highland Way three times northbound and once southbound, can honestly say going south from Kinlochleven is harder as you begin at sea-level, although on my northbound route I stopped at Kingshouse, as opposed to Bridge of Orchy area. The long queues of people you have to let pass is what it was like heading down the WHW, particularly along Loch Lomond.

Geologically speaking, Glen Coe is the remains of an ancient supervolcano. The caldera forming eruptions took place about 420 million years ago during the Silurian period, and the volcano has long since become extinct. The glen is considered to be one of the best examples of a subsidence caldera, being the place where this phenomenon was first described. A caldera is a volcanic process in which a circular fault allows a section of crust to sink, leading to magma being forced to the surface at the periphery. This sinking allows layers of rock which would otherwise have been eroded to remain visible, can be seen in Glen Coe most strikingly in Devonian volcanic lavas on Bidean nam Bian, as well as at Sgorr nam Fiannaidh, An t-Sron, and in the bed of the River Coe below Loch Achtriochtan. Surrounding the caldera the rocks consists of schist and quartzite with a ring of granite marking the main ring fault
