1:51 This is a special historical line T1 operated by KŽC Doprava, which runs every Saturday and Sunday.14:59 These trains do not currently go to the main station. The bridge over the Vltava between the main station and Smichov is in a terrible state, so as few trains as possible cross it. Line S65, on which this train used to run, is therefore temporarily shortened and runs only to Prague-Smíchov. If you want to ride the 810 series train (RegioMouse), you have to go to Smíchov and take line S65 (not S6) to Rudná, or go to Zadní Třebaň (by line S7, CityElefant trains, destination Karlštejn/Beroun) and line S76 to Lochovice. These are the closest lines to Prague where this train runs.

We once wanted to visit Unhošť and decided to go by train. We ended up finding the hard way that getting from the Unhošť train station to the city of Unhošť as a pedestrian was highly unsafe. We ended up taking a big detour by walking to Pletený Újezd (where the local's really were staring at us weirdly thinking which sane outsider would ever visit their tiny town) and then walking alongside the less frequent road to Unhošť. It was a loooong walk overall. 😅

Imagine going for groceries and running into Scott in here, that'd be random.. lol The old train you talked about is the class M 262 from the 1950s and it operates on weekends only and between Prague main train station and the Zličín stop, doesn't go as far as Rudná ;)

That "ugly" locomotive is a very popular workhorse. It's nickname is "brejlovec". Brejle in Czech means eye glasses - because it looks like it's wearing glasses. The small train was designed basically as a bus on rails and is meant to run service on local lines where not many people take the train. In some parts of the country they're still quite common. If you go east from Prague to Nymburk, those trains are still quite common and run on the local routes, especially in off peak hours like the evenings. From Nymburk north runs a line where everything is still mechanical including the signals and switches. Everything is run by station masters in every small srstion, and all without modern signals. You should check that out before it's all gone.

@@liskacek1 Track 061 From Nymburk to Jičín. From about Křinec to Kopidlno is still all mechanical. In fact in Rožďalovice still has manual crossing gates that someone at the station needs to crank. There are more mechanical gates neat Ledečky. Just north of Křinec there is a booth where someone permanently sits to man the switches and mechanical signals for the turn-off to track 062. On the weekends from April 1st to October 28th there is a speacial train trat runs from Prague Main St. to Jičín in the morning and back in the afternoon. It's called the "Český Ráj" or "Bohemian Paradise". It's worth checking it out.

Well, you did ride one of the railcars ... sort of. The Regionova you took to Rudná u Prahy, 814 032, was rebuilt from railcar 810 258 and a trailer. I've travelled over all of Czechia's rail network, and most of the little branch lines are/were worked with these 4-wheel contraptions. I wasn't so much chasing them as being plagued by them!

Let me explain, my train loving friend. In Czechia, we have a bit of a tradition of runing historical trains during summer. I'm not entirely sure about Central Bohemian region, but Posázavský Pacifik runs historical trains (ending in Dobříš and Čerčany, very beautiful single track rail. Track is very important for the Tramp movement, from where the name came.), even steam sometimes. Around Jindřichův Hradec, there are two narrow gauge railways, that have hit a bit of a hard times recently, but, I believe it was this season, they returned to schedule on one of these routes. These Jindřichohradecké místní dráhy (Jindřichův Hradec local railways) run regular steam trains over the Summer on their Southbound route and used to run them on the Northbound, the last time I was there. In South Moravia, we have annual event called Pálavský Okruh, which is a round about train ride, that takes whole day in a part historical, part touristic light-ish rail cars, towed by a steam engine from Brno to Lednice and back. The route leaves East heading for Moravský Krumlov, and comes to Lednice essentially from the West and returns home along another route, taking the faster corridor home. Speaking of Lednice, there is a historical motor car train going there in the summer, but the route is otherwise unused.

It's a splendid little railcar. Hungarian railways have a lot of these too. The original Skoda engine and Praga transmission were switched out early on though because they weren't too good. The ones still running have MAN engines and Voith transmission if I remember correctly.

If you want to ride the little railcar, then I would recommend going to the "Praha-Jinonice" station. You can get there from the Jinonice metro station. It's also close to "Walterovo náměstí" where you can find a Billa supermarket, a pub for a quick beer and a coffee shop for your coffee. 😁 From my personal experience the small railcars definitely appear there at 8:45 in the direction of Smichov and at 18:10 and 19:10 in the direction of Hostivice (it's a nice scenic route through the forest). The other option is to be at the Hostivice train station at around 8:20 and then wait for sets of 4 trains to stop there out of which 2 will be the small railcars. All of the 4 trains will leave by 8:31. If you manage to be at Hostivice this early in the morning, then I recommend taking the train towards Jinonice, which is again the scenic route and which tends to look very nice in the morning. 😊 (All of the above times specified are for workdays, I have no idea about the weekends.)

I know a route where these railcars are guaranteed. It's the S23 between Neratovice and Čelákovice. It's not too far from Prague (a 30 minute train ride). It's currently partially replaced by buses, but the railcars still run between Neratovice and Brandýs.

I got the Regio Mouse whilst travelling around Czechia a couple of weeks ago. If you take the train from Karlovy Vary to Loket then you change at Chodov and they had this for Chodov to Loket (about 20 minutes each way).

The first elephant went into service back in 2000, so long before google translate. The idea behind the name was something like, that it resembles an elephant (due to it having two decks) and city as it was intended to serve area around Prague.

Nickname Elephant came lately, like around 2010 when ČD stared to give names to various EMUs and DMUs, original nicknames were Iceberg (ledovec) (due to it was big - two deck and original livery was white) or ešus (food carrying 3part aluminium "device") - similarity - it is 3 railcars - motor, intermediate and steering car, and its body panels are made from aluminium.

These trains will be replaced soon. These are like 50 years old, most of them already renovated several times in different time periords, so you can see them with many designs from 80s to early 2010s. I kind of like these trains, sometimes it started burning in middle or your ride, but you always finished your ride, that's really not a thing with modern trains. One of the replacement of these trains should be polish RegioFox unit, but they had a lot of problems from the beggining, like too much noise inside and other problems, I hope they fixed at least something, but it's 21st century, so probably not, they will just inform us that it's not a mistake, it's just feature and we should love it. 😀 Czech train system is right before collaps, that's why there are buses everywhere instead of trains, railways are too bussy, one incident and whole country is off because you don't have any bypass routes when everything is already too bussy like train every 2 minutes like on main corridor from Prague to Brno. And construction of new corridor (fast trains) is blocked by villagers who don't want it because it's not for their cars. Ticket machines for public transportation are next to metro enterance. I don't understand why they don't put some of them even more close to trains where a lot of people these days use prague integrated transport tickets, because it's mostly cheaper than classic train ticket from place A to place B. Especially when you need to travel a lot for a whole day, you can buy 24 hours ticket for whole PID zone system for 24 eur and that works for pretty much whole central Bohemian region. Automatised baggage lockers are scam, it's operated by some international company and it's extremely overpriced, there are still normal lockers with people who serve you at Prague train station, it's in one of tunnels that lead from main hall to platforms, I recommend to find it and don't use machines. A lot of cities have station far from center, because when they originally designed rails around 1900, they just decided that they don't care about these people and they will prefer more straight rails instead of going to every center and back, it's the same problem in Kutná Hora, pretty important UNESCO city, but when you want to go to the center by train, you have to switch to another local train, because main train station is very far from center. You should try some other Prague train stations to find a "little railcar," maybe in Vršovice you would be more lucky. Or go to Kolín or Nymburk or some other cities close to Prague where these trains are still operating. One last hint: they often send these trains as the last train around midnight. 🙂

Arriva sold its Scottish bus operations to McGills in 2012 but still operate buses in North East England, Merseyside, West Yorkshire, North Wales, Midlands and in London & the South East of England. They operate the London Overground, Chiltern Railways and Cross Country rail Franchises, as well as the Grand Central open access operator. They also operate buses trains and ferries on the European mainland. Arriva is based in Sunderland and was until June 2024 owned by Deuche Bahn when it was acquired by I Squared Capital.

Hi Scott, love the Video To answer your Question on Arriva in the UK, Yes they do Run Trains in the UK and I’m sure they are the 5th biggest bus company behind Stagecoach, First Bus, Go-Ahead and National Express. As of recent, Arriva do Serve Buses in Scotland, but only in Keslo in the Boarders And Trains they own CrossCountry and Grand Central 👍🏻

These 810s aren't as common as they used to be, they're getting slowly replaced so they remain on the least important routes. These routes usually have very low ridership, low service frequency and run on old winding single-tracked railways and are usually the first routes that get shut down. Howewer there are some consistent places where you get to ride the 810, like the route from Chodov to Loket. Not really close to Prague, but the trip is well worth it as Loket is one of the most beautiful castles in the country. You get to ride a "rare" train and have a great day visiting the castle. You could also go to a historical rail event. They are quite common in Czechia during the summer and you can see a lot of historical vehicles. For example there was such an event in Kořenov recently on 28.9.2024 where you could ride a original 810 among other historical rail cars like the 820. Or a year back in Liberec, the tram depot had an open-doors day and a 810 was ferrying people from the rail station to the depot and back. (Though it was extremely crowded.) Btw none of these events focused on the 810, it's just usual that these show up to any event like that. We are a country of rail, these events happen very often so it's quite easy to get to experience the vehicle you want if you know where to look. Most often these events happen in larger stations in the depot.

That little railcar is going to Rudná u Prahy via Zličín (the other train line than you choose). It used to run from Hlavní nádraží but that old railway bridge accross river Vlitava between Hlavní nádraží and Smíchov is now in pretty bad shape so the line was shortened to Smíchov to keep less traffic out of that bridge. Also these little Class 810 railcars used to be everywhere in former Czechoslovakia, but these were partly scraped and partly converted to those RegioNova trains you travelled with to Rudná. So basically you catched your train, just really modernized one.

I share your fascination with the Venice-Simplon Orient Express and came across it at various stations on the European rail network; Paris and Venice were the only places I can recall. @Planes, Trains, Everything The Arriva train you took is a refurbished former Deutsche Bahn class 628 ... In Germany they´re nicknamed "Sanddüne" (sand dune) because of their poor acceleration "acceleration like a sand dune" ... and the Regio Nova you went on to Rudna actually consists of a rebuilt Railcar (ex class 810) and a trailer.

Have you tried the Danish Hornbæk Line. This runs from Helsingør to Gilleleje. From Hamlet's castle to a lovely sea side village. The line is one of Denmark's little regional services. In July and August they also run stream trains. While in the area why not check out Denmark's little know treasure - second hand shops, they are the best I have ever seen. My favourite is just south of Malov station.

This June I indeed managed to catch a ride with it - albeit only one short intra-Vienna segment (it was covered by my day ticket and I didn't really have much time to dilly dally), but still did it! Boy did that make me happy.

There are two lines from Prague to Rudná. You just took one of them, but these railcars runs on the 2nd one (via Hostivice, every 1-2 hours depending on the day and daytime). Since last december both of them starts at Praha-Smíchov due to the reconstruction of the station.

Arriva buses are still very much a thing in the UK. I should know, as drive for them in the West Midlands. Arriva's sister company Cross Country trains run under the DB brand, who are the parent company. However, DB has now been sold to Isquared (an American consortium) but changes Day to Day have been a working progress

No, Cross Country is still under Arriva, and it was Arriva that was sold to Isquared, not the entire DB group. I get the confusion - there was DB Regio UK which ran Chiltern, which became part of Arriva when they were bought by DB in 2010. So DB are still owned by the German government and sold Arriva.

You've an ex DB class 628 from Praha to Smichov. Years ago it was not diffilcult to get a clas 810 railcar, on every rural line you seen them. By the way, class 814 is an rebuildt 810 + 010! If you want to be sure to catch these little railcars, you can try the S76 line between Zadní Třebaň and Lochovice as those are the only railcars operating there. There is also another curiosity on that line and that is the Liteň station, where the train needs to change direction to continue along the line. There are only a few stations like that in the Czech Republic. You can get to Zadní Třebaň in about 40 minutes from Prague main station by S7 line going to Beroun.

Maximum points for effort. If it is of any consolation to you I visited the heritage railway line on the Isle of Wight a couple of weeks ago, and at their main depot they are restoring an aged diesel rail car. Still a year or two to go before completion but I think it will be well worth the wait.

Ah bad luck Scott. It reminds me of the time I went to Dublin just to fly on a Fokker 50 and the flight was cancelled due to high winds. You win a few, you lose a few I guess. By the way, if you haven't done this already you should take a trip to Stourbridge in the West Midlands and take their unique railcar from Stourbridge Junction to Stourbridge Town. It takes three minutes and is the only chance you will have to ride in a Parry People Mover powered by flywheel technology.

I know those railcars well - I rode them from Chocen to Litomysl in the late 1980’s to see my then girlfriend now wife. I once did Portrush, N. Ireland (I was a student at Uni of Ulster Coleraine) to Litomysl by train and ferry. My Dad worked for BR so most if not all of it was free on an assortment of FIP tickets 😂 Good times…

I had friends visit last weekend. One mentioned that Kozel brewery does a journey on a tiny train with a good beer at the end of it but that they didn’t have time to take it. “Just wait one moment” said I and the next day we took the semmering train to Zlicin then had a great beer at a nearby pub.

It's a bit ironic that that little railcar actually also goes to Rudna u Prahy, just by different track(122). It goes through Pražský Semmering than to Hostivice than to Rudna u Prahy.

Actually one half of that train (called Regio Nova) you've taken from Smichov to Rudná, the one with high floor and engine inside, was build on basis (mainly chasiss) of the 'Regio Mouse'. The low floor half was build from regular wagon that were used with it, those might be even rarer to spot these days around Prague. Anyway the ride of the Regio Mouse is pretty rough, it's basically bus on wheels, with automatic transmission etc. - comparing to UK I'd say it's pretty similar to Pacers, the difference is just that not that much bus parts (apart from the engine and transmission) were used :)

You need to follow you own advice. Head for the hills, find a secondary branch line with ČD (not Arriva or any of the other franchise operators) services and you'll have more luck. You'll still get Regionovas and the new RegioSpiders but Praha is just too busy these days for single car trains. Czech stations are normally well served with decent vending machines - the hot chocolate is generally excellent value.

If you like tiny rail transportation cars, I am quite sure you are familiar with Glasgow's subway. I was there recently (I am from New Jersey in the USA) and found their subway system to be like a cute toy. It is useful to get around, a subway station south of the river had a good park-ride car lot (I was driving a rental car).

@@raybrown2197 Arriva bus wise still operate in London, Luton, Milton Keynes, Essex, Colchester, Kent and Surrey, Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Coventry, Newcastle and Durham, Liverpool, North Wales and Yorkshire. Rail wise, Arriva in the UK operate Chiltern Railways, Crosscountry, Grand Central, and the London Overground

I think it was in 2019 when I went to the Czech Republic. I went to a place called Slùknov. There was a part of the branch between the German border and Slúknov where they operated with railcar in red livery. I don’t know if thats still the same

15:38 Nicholas Winton memorial. He rescued over 600 Jewish children on the ever of WWII. He's the subject of the film One Life released earlier this year in which he was portrayed by Anthony Hopkins. They were scouting locations for the film when the first train of refugees from Ukraine arrived. His story remained unknown until he appeared on That's Life in the 80s. There is also a statue of Sir Nicholas Winton sitting on a seat at Maidenhead Station near his home. I sometimes sit with him remembering his bravery in achieving what he did.

This train from 6:04 (Regio Nova - class 814) is build on frame of original 810 (the small one). So, You ride modernized version.

Getting one of those railcars is soooooooooo easy. However technically, you've been in one. The railcar you were in after Arriva's 628, was a modernised 810 (regiomouse) that's now called Regionova. If you go to Slovakia there are several ones in their original state, not the fairly modernised Czech version, still around. Near Michalovcze are some small services with the original versions. But if you want to be sure you'll get one: go over to Sanok in Poland. First you'll be in a former dutch unit from Krakow on the TLK service to Zagorz, and from Sanok or Zagorz you can take a 810 to Uherske Dolne. A lovely and largely neglected area.
