Indeed I travelled from Euston to Glasgow and return on Avanti in October and upgraded to First Class. That cost me me an extra £225 for the return trip and is comparable with your upgrade Scott of £30+ for the journey from Glasgow to Carlisle! I could not fault it, plenty to eat and drink. The four and a half hour journey was very relaxing and more importantly quiet!

Steve, I bumped in to Scott in both GLC & Carlisle. All the 11 car Pendos have completed their refurbs, a coulple of 9's have been done but it's just a matter of time until they are all done. Offer also is time dependant, Breakfast up to 10.59 but depends on the journey. Some journeys such as the 10.52 off Edinburgh is a 'Rest of the Day' offer (the one Scott had in this video). Some journeys after 11am that have started shortly after 10.30 may still be on the 'Breakfast' offer and change over after noon. I still say that Breakfast is the best we do (and not just because I cook them)

I did interrail first class and I think avanti was one of the best on my outgoing trip and pretty meh on my returning journey so I do think its a bit of luck. I do remember reading that they've recently finished 50% of refurbishing their entire fleet so maybe its a 50% chance lol

I use 1st class when making longer journeys and each summer I do a week or 2 touring using a 1st class AQll Line Rover and I've never been able to find the lounge at Glasgow Central, so thanks for showing me where it is. That chicken fricassie is very tasty and I've found that they quite often run out on busier services.

I don't think the Wigan or Warrington stops further along that route have 1st Class either - to be honest I just use it for the onboard meal and it's quieter and more spacious than standard, the lounge is nice to have along as it's somewhere quiet to sit away from the main concourse.

Wigan and Warrington are both just convenient stops to change for Manchester and Liverpool, so most travellers would either have just arrived or leave within the next few minutes.

Agreed. Would have had to go all the way down to Crewe or Birmingham to get another lounge, I think. And the last time I was in Birmingham, the first class lounge looked very closed… Newcastle being the first stop with a lounge self of Edinburgh on LNER, and some trains not stopping between Edinburgh and Newcastle at all, I think made that a sensible station to travel to and review. Not quite an equivalent on the West Coast route.

Your train being a long one is I assume one of the 11 car Pendolinos and they have all now been refurbished with brand new seats in Standard class and one carriage has been converted from 1st to Standard, as there's less demand for business travel. The 9 car trains are going through the same process right now. Shame there's no lounge at Carlisle. Perhaps there's an old Pacer car that could be converted and put into a bay platform?!

Great video, Scott. The train carrying timber you captured towards the end runs weekdays to Chirk Kronospan. I believe the timber is sustainably sourced from the Kielder Forest and used to manufacture panels. You did well with food and drink on what is quite a short journey - think you should attempt a London trip same way (could be a new challenge to get as many freebies to make up the diffence between first and standard fares 😂). The West Coast Main Line have always been good even in the Virgin Trains days. I recall years ago my friend and I travelling on a first class all Britain Railrover which cost around £500, but at redeemed a quarter of that on free food and drink. An exceptionally good journey being During to Manchester - not only treated to a free meal, but I somehow consumed 7 gratis gin miniatures so was a bit tiddly on reaching Piccadilly 😂

I did the standard version last January down to Carlisle and the standard in return last June. I like that train a lot. The scenery around Elvanfoot from both the train and the bus is really cool and one of the hidden gems of Scotland. Yes, the train is very good even in the cattle class.... standard fare. I like that train a lot and will be back soon. Excellent video as per always from my fellow Buddy.

I’ve never experienced a first class train service as good as that. The carriage looked amazing. The best first class I’ve experienced is East Midlands Railway between Derby and London, but Avanti looks better. Well done Scott!

When HST was a thing on MML, was a morning train (or two) from Leeds to St.Pancras via Erewash line. They serving proper breakfast free of charge to 1st class passengers. Unfortunately, HST gone, and breakfast train as well :(

We travelled from Euston to Wolverhampton this summer 1st class and found it pretty good The Pendelino is more comfortable than the Hitachi 800 series - we've been on LNER and GWR versions The lounge at Euston was excellent this summer, much better than last year when we used it travelling on the Cally Sleeper

I used to love having an evening meal on trains between St. Pancras and Sheffield in BR days. Then along came privatisation and Midland Main Line continued the fare available. Sadly the coming of East Midlands Railways put paid to the excellent catering as they scaled it totally down. Not worth paying the extra for first class now. Indeed they don't even give you a newspaper any more.

I just did Avanti first class from Stafford to london for a work function yesterday. First time with them and was impressed. The breakfast and service on board was impeccable. Lounge in Euston was so-so . But was only in it for 15-20 minutes.

I had a decent onboard experience in first-class with Avanti West Coast (AWC) from Glasgow to Carlisle in July of this year, but my experience with the first-class lounge in Glasgow was not good. First, it being July the AWC ticket counter was crazy busy, and after a five-minute wait, I was finally let into the lounge by a passenger who was leaving to catch their train. I could not get the attention of anyone in the ticket office, and I didn't want to be seen as butting in line, so I was stuck with my luggage in purgatory. Then, the snack offerings were meager with one of two - the pita chips - having expired several months previous! As you said, no bathrooms or Wi-Fi. And the topper for me was watching the Avanti West Coast employees using the lounge as if it was just for them, with no regard for the passengers who paid for the privilege. That said, the gentlemen serving me beer and lunch once aboard were so nice, they almost made up for the gawd-awful start to the trip.

Well now, Avanti indeed seems to know what the word 'first' in 'first class' is meant to mean onboard an intercity train: restaurant feel to a meal using real plates and utensils, not paper cups and wrapped snacks as we saw in two earlier videos(LNER and X-Country, whose equipment seemed to be a bit long in the tooth as well) , and attentive service . Mind, the premium for first class over standard is significantly greater on Avanti than on the other two ... While you don't always ' get what you pay for' in this instance you do.

Yes good report, Scott. The issue I have is that Avanti has upgraded its F class to something better and with a price premium to match. What wasn't mentioned was that if you sacrifice the catering you still have F class accommodatio but at a lower price. Think Eurostar's Business Premier.

It did cost quite a bit more than standard, but if you add up the cost of all the free extras - coffees, snacks, meals etc, which you would have to pay for in standard, then it makes the comparison a bit more reasonable. Not that you would get chicken fricassee in standard though! 😄

The banana bread in the lounge at Glasgow Central is excellent. Avanti have a lounge at Crewe - but a couple of years ago when I asked at Preston if there was a first class lounge, the Avanti lady replied "We're not like that in Preston" which had me laughing. Pity, as Preston station platforms 3/4 were designed in order to feed people en masse before trains had on-board catering. Excellent video.

Regarding Preston, in the good old Virgin Train days,when I boarded First Class to go to Euston, the staff were handing out free copies of the London Evening Standard (now a free paper, but 50 pence at the time!). I was very impressed by the then quality of service. Anyway, good luck to Avanti.

I used to use AWC standard class in North Wales, it was not good. However, recent trips to and from London Euston and Birmingham are, as you said, what first class travel should be like! The Euston lounge was excellent but the Birmingham New Street lounge was closed due to staffing. I didn’t think anyone would top LNER 1st class but AWC certainly do

The lounge was worse thing as you said the desk you hear everything but the cookies is nice and I traveled in J coach i was at the first seat on the right at the window with the two seats which was good space and fast wifi and i got the toasted sandwich.

Onboard plus catering/service looked excellent with sockets in the right place for once . Lounge very sloppy and access only one hour before. That fridge with Avanti only is an open invite to other operators customers 😆

Avanti....it's like being a tortoise on roller skates. I live in Bolton and use Avanti to get down to that there London a couple of times a month. The trains from Manchester are always busy and the prices can be insane. I don't pay, my employer does, but sometimes the cost makes me shudder. Peak time day return, standard class £450. Yes, four hundred and fifty pounds, and that's in standard class. But there's a trick. Take the local train out to Wigan instead of going in to Manchester, and get on the Glasgow to London service. The price drops to under £100, the train is far less crowded, and the total journey time is the same. I know that people will say that the price was high because of demand, but I don't agree with that. The cost of running the train between Manchester and London is the same regardless of how many people are on it, so the ticket price should not change because of demand.

I'm surprised Avanti got the maximum score, but good for them! The train looks like what it is, a repainted Virgin Pendo. I think Virgin were better. I used to travel frequently between Manchester and the south in 1st class. You used to get "complimentary" wine in 1st (ie paid for in the price) Do they still do that? It was noticeable that if you had a Manchester crew on board you would get frequent top up's. If it was a London crew, just one. I often wondered, with the London crew, what happened to the rest of the numerous bottles. Any answers?

Avanti have refurbished the Pendolinos which is good as they were getting a bit tatty. Standard Class looks a lot smarter and looking at this video First Class looks very stylish too. Just one question though, the new Standard Class seats are quite hard in keeping with the LNER Azuma. Are the Fist Class seats any more bottom friendly? Otherwise, nice to see Avanti get some good press for a change.

It most definitely was your lucky day as almost always the Lounge at Central is never open and always some silly excuse why that’s the case, I agree it’s not the best of lounges when if you are lucky enough to turn up when it’s open, That Chicken meal you had is new, they’ve had the same stuff for quite a while until I heard about this one, to be fair once onboard the service and staff on Avant are very good

Btw, I do hope the test of Wi-Fi be done on journey. At GWR, the on-train Wi-Fi works flawlessly at stations. However once the train starts moving, the connection speed drops and more often than not, it just no longer be able to connect to outside.

Looks a great 1st class carriage. Are the windows the normal size? They look quite narrow in height.

The windows on these trains (class 390 Pendolino) are notoriously small. Doesn’t feel so bad in standard premium and first class, where all seats align with windows, but with more seats crammed into standard, it can feel darker, and quite a few seats fit in between the large spaces between windows so you get no view whatsoever. Although the refurbishment they have been doing of these trains has significantly improved the comfort and brightness of standard class. It’s very smart actually. Heard one lady, in standard, ask if she had accidentally boarded the first class carriage when I last travelled, that’s how impressed she was!

Great review. I’m in America and have never traveled on Avanti West Coast but reading the UK press recently gave me a poor view of their service. So this was a pleasant surprise. I do not think, however, it was fair to give Avanti 0 points for not having a lounge in Carlisle since the other train lines do no have lounges there either.

just watched your vid from a year ago - Frankfurt to Scotland via Dublin. Looking at trainline you can get a train from Frankfurt to Amsterdam. 1 train / 4 hours / £62 or £72 for first class. fly from schipol or better still DFDS ferry to newcastle. would be less painful !! keep it up :-)

My best first class experience was when working for National Express (yes a coach company). I was sent to a meeting starting from London Euston to Birmingham. They gave me the CEO's pass and I travelled with Virgin (even then price £140 but lovely meal and drinks both ways)

The lounge at Glasgow looks like they've removed the health and safety poster and union sign up advert from the old staff room and stuck a first class sign on the front door. Hardly worth it, unless your desperate for somewhere to do a meeting!

Depends on what you mean by Carlisle as there's the actual city and then the council area and the council area covers a vast rural area way beyond the edge of Carlisle and I think that even Brampton is covered by Carlisle City Council.So the actual population of the city may well be significantly less than the figure quoted.

At the 1971 census, the last before Local Government reorganisation, the population of the City of Carlisle was c70000. The 1974 reorganisation expanded many towns far beyond their boundaries. I realise that half a century has elapsed, but I think that the 1971 figures are still reasonably accurate for the urban area.

The sound effect for the scoring the lounge I would give it 8/20. Why on earth can British trains not have folding tables on 4 seats like other countries. It makes it so much easier getting into and out of the seats.

I detest the Avanti trains for two reasons. First, the windows are far too shallow, and second, the seats and windows are not aligned, except in first class, although almost all trains seem to be like this nowadays. It is also high time that we scrapped the term "standard class." The term is meaningless. A standard is basically a level of service. If we are going to use the term at all, first class should be standard class, and second class bog-standard class.The kitchen on Pendolinos is between the driver's cab and first class accommodation. Second class passengers have to make do with bog-standard British Rail sandwiches, and other cold snacks, which, according to Avanti, forms part of a "meal deal." First class ticket holders get a free meal as well. One used to be able to travel Weekend First, with free food and drink, but this has now been abolished, and the weekend catering was very limited. How one can survive a long-distance rail journey these days without starving, unless one has a first-class ticket, beats me.

I did Carlisle to Glasgow last week originating from London. First class ticket £129. The onboard catering was good from the start. I did the reverse yesterday back to London again first class 129£. No catering until 2hrs 30 minutes in. Poor.

I think of the two main Pacific Northwest hubs, Portland and Seattle, only one gets a first class/sleeper lounge when both probably should since both are 2mil+ cities
