I saw this infomercial the other day for an ab muscle toning belt and immediately knew it was something I wanted to talk about on here. Stay tuned for a little surprise at the end...

There’s tons of stuff on this idea in the bodybuilding community; water weight, bloating, flexing the muscles and (de)hydration are all factors in someone’s physique, and can make a huge difference, like a difference enough to convince ppl pictures taken in the morning, with no water drank, no bloating and a slight pump from a workout and pictures taken 12hrs later after drinking carbonation, not flexing and plenty of water were photos taken upwards of months apart as a “transformation”; you can extremely easily trick ppl

Some infomercials are anomalies. One time I saw an ad for a circular saw and I swear to God, it just kept going. How much is there to say about a circular saw? 8:44 Yes, this has bothered me! You could put 50 professionals each with 20 years of experience together in a room, but you wouldn't suddenly have the galaxy-brain benefit of 1000 combined years of experience, you would just have a large pool of varied perspectives and knowledge, but they'd still be limited by their individual experience. It doesn't stack up. This has been a small pet peeve of mine for so long. Yes I know it's just marketing speak and not supposed to be 100% literal, but they do still say it like it means something, it's supposed to be impress you.

Experience is one way to put it but it’s more like having different specialties that compliment each other. Like how Steve Jobs needed Wozniak to cover his weak areas. That’s how I’ve always interpreted it, that it’s their experiences add up because they’re different. On an infomercial tho, probably just a load of crap buzzword lol

The most interesting infomercials are for things that clearly have a genuine use for disabled people but aren't being advertised as such. I know the answer is "ableism" but why not just... advertise to a populous that might actually need the thing you're selling?

I don't think it's ableism, it's probably just a company trying to find a larger market for something they made.
@jakerockznoodles

@@CarterDeLeo Yeah, sometimes you want to make a product to sell to help disabled people but to get return on investment you need to sell more units than this market allows for. At that point you either fund it through selling other more "wide market" products or try to convince a wider market that they need this one. Its not hard to see why many would choose the latter. One that confused me, though, was a product that looked like it was designed to make certain kitchen tasks for people with arthritis or rheumatism a bit easier, but then to clean it, it's got all these fiddly little buttons and dials! So how is the presumed target market supposed to use it more than a couple of times, when it will ecome clogged up, gross and/or unusable 🤨

They do have machines that can work your muscles adequately but they are typically done in a office and pretty intense. @@SkiddlyBink I remember when fidget spinners and other fidget toys exploded in popularity. They’d really good for people with ADHD or people who just struggle to concentrate and sit still but before they became super popular it wasn’t easy to find them. I never saw them in any stores or ever heard anyone mention fidget toys. But then when the general public started using them, they became super easy to find. And it also made it seem less weird if you used one because everyone was using one, it was cool to use one. I only heard about fidget spinners because they became super popular and I bought one and I really liked it and it helped me concentrate. I will say though that after the trend died out I stopped using it in public because I didn’t want to be seen as weird for still using one when it was seen as an old trend. But at least I know they exist now I can use it at home. There’s also weighted blankets, a few years ago I had only rarely heard of them and they were hard to buy and very expensive. But nowadays everyone wants one and you can find them for pretty cheap at just your local store. My mum bought one a couple years ago and I think she had to buy it online from another country and it was expensive but now you can easily find them here. So they’re a lot easier to buy now which is good for the people who really benefit from having one.

I got an electrotherapy machine from Walgreens for, like, 25 bucks. If you really want to electrocute your stomach, go wild for way cheaper, I guess? (for real, that machine super helps with PT and muscle pain, but a stomach is not somewhere you would want to apply it???) Great vid!

Pretty early on I called it's use being for disability and they were just selling it to a "normie" audience. I would love a whole episode about items actually used for disabled folks whose ADs are targeted to the abled. You could even get some Disabled youtubers to guest and give their opinion.

The easiest way to build abs is to get an ab wheel (or some flat piece of plastic you can slide on for carpet) and just do a few ab rollouts with proper form every day, gradually pushing your hands out more each time as you get stronger.

If each muscle contraction with this was equivalent to the contraction you get with a crunch, it would be so uncomfortable or painful. Imagine your muscles contracting as if they are picking up half your weight in a sit up but you’re unwillingly contracting muscles in a position where you just end up fighting the pull of the muscles. Edit: okay, actually it doesn’t seem as far off as I was thinking with that demo at the end xD
