Thank you so much!!! I had been using the incorrect way and didn't know why it looked funny. Seeing your video helped me see not only how to do it the correct way, but also how it should and shouldn't (but does in places of my work) look.

Thanks for the tutorial! I think incorrect yarning-over may be why my crochet work turns out curly... will definitely be using this technique from now on!

thank you again for explaining so well. It makes things so much easier when things are explained so clearly:)))

yarn under is also used in crochet and in fact it makes rather a nice stitch especially with single crochet - its not incorrect but rather a matter of personal choice, yarn over or yarn under either way it can be correct depending on how you like your single crochet

You're absolutely right - it's not incorrect if you do it on purpose! The point of my video is to explain how to make *standard* crochet stitches correctly. If you're following a pattern that doesn't specify to use yarn under stitches, you won't get the intended result if you don't make the stitches 'correctly' (i.e. the standard way, as the designer intended) - it's a different stitch, and it will look different and have different properties. Not bad, just different 🙂

I was watching another instructor's video a few days ago and the first thing I noticed was that she was using the incorrect "yarn under" method instead of the correct "yarn over" method of catching the yarn on her hook. I was so surprised to see this that I kept watching the video, with my mouth hanging open, I'm sure. It looked so strange to see her do this, and so complicated! I can't even remember who it was now, but hopefully she doesn't have any beginners' crochet tutorials as she would be teaching the most basic part of crochet incorrectly. I was so surprised. 😯

Please tell me how do you make your video so clear? What setting do you have? Would you mind to share? thanks.

is it really a matter of "right and wrong" or just consistency?
@planetjune
@planetjune 3 ай бұрын
It's a matter of 'right and wrong' if you want to make standard crochet stitches. Using YU will give you a different stitch with a similar overall size but a different appearance, and there's nothing 'wrong' with that if it's what you want to do! See the blog post that accompanies this video for examples: www.planetjune.com/yarnover

How do you ad safety eyes?
@planetjune
@planetjune 5 ай бұрын
You add the eyes later, once you've crocheted past the area where you want them. Just insert the shank of the eye into a gap between stitches, and, when you're happy with the position of the eye, you can push on the back of the eye from the inside of the head to secure it.

im still left confused by this video :| I always wrap my yarn in such a way it would never pass over the previous stitch, only either through it or remain on the same side of the stitch, so I end up with the long end in the back of the stitch. from your video I think that would be under, but im not sure, since you say it twists the loop, which is exactly what it explicitly does not do?
@planetjune

It's not about the yarn passing over or under the previous stitch; it's about the *hook* passing over or under the yarn in order to grab the yarn to form each stitch. The yarn will always stay at the back of the work, either way. And the 'twist' I'm talking about doesn't mean the yarn itself will be twisted, but that, if you pass the hook over the yarn instead of under it in order to grab the yarn, the stitches that are formed will have a different shape vs the standard way, because each loop of yarn is twisted a different way *compared with the standard method*. I suggest you pause midway through a stitch, after you grab the yarn with your hook (or wrap the yarn around your hook, if that's what you do) and before you draw the hook up through a stitch, to see whether your hook has passed under or over the strand of the working yarn.

@@planetjune I know it's not about the yarn passing over the previous stitch - I'm saying that the way I originally chose to learn to grab the yarn was in such a way that it did not, since I often hide the ends inside my stitch, and by making it like that the end can easily be crocheted in the exact centre of the stitch in order to achieve minimum visibility. As for what I meant with the yarn being in the back, I meant the long end being on the back side of the loop that remains on your needle.As for the hook passing over or under, with the way I'm holding the yarn with my other hand (very close to my work, as apposed to at a distance as you are holding it) it's very hard for me to tell, as it looks like it's passed under regardless of in what direction i grab the yarn. Sorry if my comment is vague/ambiguous/sound irritated, this is not my intention - I'm not a native speaker of the English language, so it can be difficult to construct clear sentences sometimes (I just about manage to say what I mean, but it can be hard to word things in a straightforward way when you're used to a different sentence/grammatical structure).

@@merren2306 I'm sorry I misunderstood your first comment! In the end, if you're happy with the way you're crocheting and you haven't noticed any difference that bothers you between your work and anyone else's, it doesn't really matter anyway :)

@@planetjune I mean my stitches are absurdly tight, but I actually prefer the way that looks, and I'm not really into making clothing so the softness isn't too relevant either :) I was just wondering wheter I'm doing YO or YU out of interest, not with the intention of actually changing my style ^^ It's also relevant to me since I intend to and am working on writing a pattern, so it is important for me to correctly identify what I'm actually doing.
@planetjune
@planetjune 5 жыл бұрын
@@merren2306 Oh yes, it's vital if you're writing a pattern to either do things the standard way, or to clearly explain what your readers need to do differently. Good luck with that!
