Thread might be too thin to work with this regulator but you might be able to use a smaller hook to make your stitches tighter but chain more in the beginning so that it still fits around your finger

@2:35 If you can't invest in a yarn bowl (low priced ones go for like $40 from what I've seen), you can always use a regular ceramic bowl or some other bowl with weight and then clip a binder clip on the bowl's lip and feed the yarn through the metal hole(s). I use a wood bowl I bought off Publix clearance for like 5 bucks and a binder clip, and it works great for me.

I made myself 2 tension regulators. I use 1 on my index & the other on my middle finger - I have extreme sensitivity to the point I don’t want the yarn to touch my skin. This has been my saving grace. This allows me to crochet without the pain to my skin. Thank you for sharing!!! ❤️🤗❤️🤗🤗🤗

It been over one year since viewing your tension regulator tutorial and I was compelled to return to post another comment on how this tutorial has been instrumental in my ability now to crochet for hours. I have been crocheting purses and bags using size 18 nylon and it would have been impossible for me to crochet with this slippery nylon without this crochet tension idea. I am 70 years old with arthritis beginning to develop in my hands yet I have made several crocheted purses, bags,, straps, etc with the nylon now and the ability to adjust tension by increasing the number of stitches the yarn/cord is woven through is absolutely the most important aspect if this idea. Many thanks to whomever came up with this idea and thank you for sharing it with us!

That was so amazing! My granny told me when I was 12 that the way I held both my crochet hook and the tension in my left hand was completely wrong! She said it would lead to major problems when I moved on to more complex work. I ignored her, and now at age 51 I just couldn’t re-learn how to hold the yarn properly. Also I just received a little bucket with handles as a gift and it is a perfect yarn bowl! I really didn’t know about any of these tips but they will help tremendously with my new obsession for amagurumi and hopefully make my coasters more even.

As you said... practice practice practice ☹️ I'm now 52 and have been crocheting since I was 5. My mum when first teaching me had me doing chains for months...lol but we learned how to make different things with all the chains I had been making. Made for fun and great practice for which I'm eternally greatful.

Ditto with my mom! I remember making yards of chains with our fingers in the kitchen while she cooked. My parents divorced and we moved into my grandma’s home in Panama where we attended Catholic school run by German nuns. Crocheting tons of doilies with super tiny white thread and tiny hooks. No knitting because of the heat. But OK with me as i now create amigurumi creatures, do free-crocheting, make funky tops, hats, using threads and yarns of all sizes. Thank God for this skill during COVID. I’ve made little hearts with wings for everyone i know on the front line of Covid, little elves for xmas, etc. etc. so happy that in 21st century we’ve moved away from doilies.

This is EXCELLENT! If any of you have difficulty with tension, for me it's because I cannot close the fingers of my left hand to grip the yarn at all, then this "tension regulator" is AMAZING! I thought I'd never be able to crochet (I knit), because of not being able to correctly hold the yarn with tension. NOW IT'S EXCITING because I'm actually making progress. Thank you Sigoni for your wonderful website, Facebook page, and your tutorials!!! Thank you! You gave me new hope! Edit: And your "personalized" help is incredible!! I cut a finger off a rubber glove, the thicker gloves you use to wash dishes. I cut it long enough to cover the part of my pointer finger that the yarn rubs across.. Not only does it help with tension but I normally use my pinky & ring finger to hold tension and they start to cramp up painfully, using this 1 glove finger helps hold the yarn enough that you don't really need to use your fingers for tension, so they don't cramp up.. Another awesome thing about it is when you're working with scratchy rough yarn, it rubs against your finger and eventually starts to hurt bc it's like a rug burn.. The rubber finger guard, keeps the scratchy yarn off your skin....

Good tips. I was a little amused about how some hold their yarn. I bought a book about 50 years ago on how to crochet. In that book it showed how to wind the yarn through your fingers. I still do it that way. When my stitches get too tight i go up a size to get my work back on track. If it gets too loose i go down a hook size.

The tension regulator is an Awesome thing. I gave up crocheting for many years because of carpal tunnel. I hold my yarn different than almost every video I've seen. I use my left pinky held out like for British tea...Lol to keep the tension. It cramps a lot! I have tried using my first finger like you but have not been able to maintain that. This seems like it will be the answer to give relief to my pinky! Thank you so much!
@SigoniMacaroni
@SigoniMacaroni 4 жыл бұрын
Yes we all crochet differently and I’m glad that you continued using your pinky for tension because while some people would say that’s wrong, it should be whatever feels the most comfortable for you. So I’m glad you found that that’s how you crochet best and I hope the regulator helps with your pinky pain

Can I just say that I accidently found you!!, so I read your blog on pintrest or I'm not sure where it was, it was about what you learned in a year of crocheting and another about many easy begginer patterns, and I just clicked on this out of curiousity, When I read your name on the 'i' thing (sorry, don't know what it's called) and as silly as this may sound you have inspired and motivated me. I have discovered crochet a long time ago and just gave up on it because of school, but now im more motivated than ever and even started my first project and it's half way done, I thank you as you are a reason to many's acomplishments. 😊

@@SigoniMacaroni oh im making a scarf (typical i know XD) and my dream project is making actual clothes out of crochet and possibly creating new stitches since I have actually already discovered some of the stitches that I see on youtube like joining together the stitches and the single double stitch i think? it's the one where you do it just like a double stitch but pull through all of them instead. The only thing is that I don't know how I can use them and what other stitches they're fit for when I first discovered them myself. I thank you again for your incredible work!

I wrap the yarn around my pinky finger twice, under my ring finger, over my middle finger and hold the work with my forefinger. That's how the book showed how to hold the yarn. The Coat's and Clark's book Knitting, Crochet, Embroidery and Tatting. This tension controller is a great way to control the tension for people with arthritis and any other hand problems. Thank you for your videos, I didn't have the help they have now when I learned in the 60's. Just books and I bought my supplies at Woolworths or Kmart, they were the only places available back then. Merry Christmas and God bless you and your family.

@@SigoniMacaroni Thank you, yes, I had a nice quiet day. When I learned to knit and crochet, I was 10 and if they had any yarn stores back then, I didn't think about looking them up in the yellow pages. I'm thinking about making my own videos showing knitting, crocheting, embroidery and needlepoint. I can sew and quilt, but I'll leave them for other video makers. I don't have all of the room they would take for all of the supplies. And many quilters these days use longarm sewing machines instead of hand quilting. I'll be lucky to get all of my yarn and books in the craft room and my bedroom too. I have hoarding tendencies and definitely don't need more stuff!

Hello I’m new to your channel. I’ve been crocheting for about ten years I learned from KZbin tutorials. Ive already caused damage to my pointer finger my tension finger because my I hold my yarn tight. Ive tried gloves and rings and other methods to help relieve the strain on my finger. It hurts so bad I can’t crochet sometimes. I’ll be making a tension regulator for each finger ❤😂

I found yarn bowls very expensive, and not particularly portable, so I have made myself a couple of "Yarn On The Arm" bags (by Krista from The Secret Yarnery), in different sizes, to fit the various sizes of yarn skeins. They are great to keep yarn in and you just slip your hand through the handles and off you go. I use them for both knitting and crochet projects, plus they are a great way to use up some of my scrap yarn... :))
