It basically did what we Hobie 16 sailors call a "pitch pole". The thing is, the rudder on this boat is like a wing under the water creating lift and yet it also maintains the balance by also creating a resistance or hydro down force keeping the stern up and when that rudder/wing came up out of the water it lost the hydro down force causing the bow to suddenly crash down and submarine having a "pitch pole" effect.

A friend of mine found a piece of that Oracle boat while doing invasive spartina elimination work in the marshlands of SF Bay. Despite me telling him to mount it on the wall as a trophy, he gave it back to Larry & co.

Glad to happen now during testing and not during a race..hopefully designers can rework and make more stable.

"Losing the rudder" on one these craft likely has a bit of a different meaning to more conventional vessels. I'd guess it is the horizontal surfaces of the fancy T rudder that get affected by cavitation, making the rudder effectively push up, the turning force of the rudder moving up (due to the lost flow of water pushing water up) shoves the bow down. I suspect there is an element of a runaway process that is exceedingly difficult to recover from once cavitation is sustaining itself on the rudder surfaces. Under conditions where cavitation may be more likely, perhaps the boats need to fly a bit lower, or have a bit of rake forward on the rudder added to make it more difficult for cavitation to arise (be that due to velocity, or water pressure reducing due to sea state). If sailed within the stated performance window of the craft, the boats should be robust enough to sustain shoving a the bow in a number of times. As Dalt's indicates, we have to expect that software will contain some glitches, thus the craft should not fail if previously undamaged from a single event. What number of hard events should the class be designed to withstand, should it be a relatively low number (eg 10) or a significantly higher number?

I wonder if having weighted forward foils is an issue, plus a flat deck toward the bow. I notice the SailGP F50's nosedive and recover with no issues. The bows are sharp with no flat deck to force them deeper and pressure of the water on a big flat deck.

Random question but I don't know who to ask... Any brands out there sell neoprene pants in long sizes? My son has a 34 inch inseam - regular Medium pants are too short.

The real question to ask is why the defender provided a rule book that generates a failure prone design and in the same time allowed itself to build two hulls instead of one for the contenders (despite the later having to race each other first) ? Simple answer : because the AC is a lawyer competition instead of a sailing event. The goal is to keep the title without a faire fight, US and UK sailors lost their honor decades ago should they ever had one.

So funny to hear all that "managerese" talk. "All is OK, it's a GREAT thing this happened". We are happy. We are going forward all the time. ..... Such BS.
