Great interview with alan. He comes across really well and super interesting how much he changed on hugo boss and why. I would love to have an evening with him talking about the philosophy of these boats!

2:33 Conrad was such a good host/ correspondent in the Volvo Ocean Race coverage back in the day. Nice to see him again!

Thank you for this in depth analysis of Alan’s boat, I wondered why all black inside given the length of the confinement during dark nights, I guess its awesome style; if a repair was very difficult is any guidance by your shore team allowed … I know , non stop, without assistance .

It's mainly about weight saving......painting the interior adds kg which could be used elsewhere to benefit the structure

With a 35 knot or more wind speed over the deck I’m wondering if the foiling boats may find ice buildup cramping their style as they get further south.

Great summaries! When they give you mono-one channel audio, can you click and duplicate it to the other channel? One channel is useless for headphone wearers. 🤣

What happens to these kind of boats at end of life? Can anything be recycled or do they just end up dismantled in landfill?
@PlanetSailOnline4 күн бұрын
Since the race started in 1989 and to the best of our knowledge none of the boats has been scrapped although a few have been lost at sea - IMOCA's or Open 60s as they used to be called are a good example of how grand prix boats can be pretty sustainable

what breaks on a boat like this?

574nm in 24hrs = an average of 44k/h or 27m/h...

615 nm now..! 47 kph
@ats-36934 күн бұрын
@MBCGRS Crazy speed on a yacht and scary when soloing, even wearing a safety tether if you fell overboard at 47kph you'd have your work cut out pulling yourself back up the tether against a 47kph water flow. Actually I wonder if they don't wear a remote control device that they can activate to winch the tether line in if they find themselves being towed behind the yacht?
@MBCGRS4 күн бұрын
@ats-3693 It is certainly on the thin edge... But I believe most of the foiling yaughts are covered cabins. Sailing completely from below decks.
@lastpenny8494 күн бұрын
@@ats-3693 You are only getting up if you can waterski. No chance at 5 kts let alone 25.
@johnmayer34334 күн бұрын
@@ats-3693 It seems to me that you have not the slightest idea of water flow, even in just 6 or 7 kph (or better 3 to 4 knots since we are sailing) it would be impossible to pull against. Falling off the boat at a speed of 20 kts means certain death.
