I’m shocked at how few boats have been taken out by ocean garbage. In 2016-17 it felt like half the fleet was taken out by debris. What would have changed this so dramatically? Sheer luck?

You calling ice growlers "ocean garbage"? No matter how you "felt", half the fleet in 16-17 wasn't taken out by ocean garbage

Question from a non sailor: At night or down in the cabin, how do competitors navigate around objects or other boats? Do they have radar or other sensors that give them alerts and or steer the autopilot?
@thierrylofoten44702 күн бұрын
Having crossed the Atlantic and return (Brittany-Caribbean) on a small 30 ft sailboat 10 years ago, I was equipped with a radar allowing me to detect a tanker at 12nm and 2 autopilots. This is ultra-common equipment that every skipper has, cheap and quite reliable. I could zigzag in a crowded port at night without problem.The equipment on VdG boats is much more powerful and sophisticated. Their autopilot, by example, has a gyroscope, taking into account the inclination of the boat. The problem of objects floating at water level (example containers) was insoluble for me, no radar being able to detect it in rough sea. A kind of "Russian roulette" for me but for VdG skippers too, I think. Over the las 10 years, AIS has been developed (= transponder connected to VHF radio), indicating on screen the position, course and speed of all ships encountered, extremly useful in fishing zones.

The way forward has to be foiling but in the words of sir Peter Blake to win this race you first have to complete it !

Good video but you definitely need to check your pronunciation of some French names (like Dalin or Joyon). 😄

You mean like Sam Davies whose team Innovations Coeur have been and continue to help children with heart conditions? Or perhaps the Linkedout team who help marginalised people in society get back onto their feet and into work? Or indeed the many other causes that are represented in this race and brought to people’s attention, helped but the enormous pulling power of this race. Don’t usually waste time responding to such uniformed comments but when it criticises people who are using their campaigns to do good it needs to be called out
