What I have switched to is not watching planner reviews (except for a couple of creators) because I am not looking for a new planner. I am looking at planning techniques and innovating my methods and habits in order to not feel overwhelmed. But I definitely get the FOMO. I also keep a list of features and brands that I want to keep in mind for the next time I need a planner or if my planning needs truly change (not just FOMO).

Well said. I am also looking for planning techniques that resonate with me and might work for me. I print my own inserts for a 6-ring A5 planner, adjusting them as needed. I have room for only one month in the planner, so it is practical to re-evaluate on a monthly basis. I do have monthly’s for the full year. I use my planner daily and it gets messy. That’s ok. This is very true here, I watch to see if I am missing out on something I could work on in my journal. My biggest thing is my hand writing.. and a smother way to keep up on the monthly have too’s. And how to rotate the seasons for me to keep up on the have to’s. I get it that it’s quite a bother what I am saying but I know what I need to make me work more smoothly.. I tend to think I ought to make notes and tip this ins. So I can keep on track. I have only done ONE planner and TN-s about one aper quarter.

I’m enjoying a dead silly simple index card method along with my journal. It’s great since index cards don’t feel precious at all. Only what gets written down on them. I have a very short stack I use for my goals and related tasks and keep to a few motivational pep talk affirmations or quotes I like and a task list and my daily card that holds anything pertaining to that day. The appointments I really keep in my phone. But I used to buy everything. I have a happy planner mountain and even some coveted hundreds of dollars stuff. I just started this method a month ago. The freedom is amazing. I can’t look back, but my phone has my past appointments and my journal holds my thoughts. My 3x5 cards hold my necessary comfort. That’s how I’ve been doing it. It’s very nice. Just found this channel. You are funny silly and lovely. Thanks for posting.

I agree, its to the point where I was getting annoyed watching planning videos....and thats when I decided to take a step back. I started watching planning videos more for planning techniques and time management instead Ive been bombarded with things that caused me more anxiety: 1. They'd start a planner that they absolutely love and then the next month they'd be tired of it and say its not working and so it goes for them all year. Planners or stationary addicts? 2. The whole planning in 10 different planners confuses the heck out of me, like how does that work for productivity when you spend more time setting up planners than referring back to them? 3. The pwm videos where its just laying down stickers, especially to the point where theres barely space to write actual plans. And yes I know everyone is free to do what they like or whatever works for them, its their time and money but these are just some of the things that has lead me to abandoning the planner community on yt because waste and excess gives me anxiety.

The algorithm really gets you. I've been wanting to see a video on a setup of the goals section of the Common Planner and I haven't found one, not one. I mean a video that goes through it step by step. I've filled my goals section in my new Common Planner and I'm wondering if I should make a video just because there aren't any out there, but I'm not sure I want to be creating KZbin videos. I avoid unboxing videos because I'm already familiar with all the planners out there. You just need to watch one. What I like to watch are videos of how people have set up their planners, just to get inspiration. I've always been into Japanese planners, for the past 10 years or so, but I only discovered planner KZbin in the past year. It has motivated me to be more consistent and I filled every page of my Hobonichi Cousin and Hobonichi Weeks this year (first year with both, I used a Jibun Techo before).

I am trying to get back into using a paper planner, so I started watching videos, but mostly from one channel. Over the years, I’ve tried many different things, so I already knew I wanted a dated & structured planner (not a bullet journal or DIY option) that was bound like a book - not spiral, disc, etc. I also knew that I need to experiment and determine if I want only weekly, only daily, or both, so I got a planner with both. I think so much of this is understanding what doesn’t work for you and eliminating those as potential options for you. I also know that I have limited time & energy to decide on a planner, and same for experimenting with any planners this year. That really helped in not getting caught up too much in the consumerism and buying only ONE planner I intend to use for the entire year.

I got into this channel by Jibun techo, because there were none of reviews in Korea, also. and since then, I agree everything you say and so relatable. What I do at first is make a limitation on my budget. I don’t have enough money, I got my Hobonichi a6 weekly supplement through second-handed Korean app and it’s for recording my study habits, and got Muji diary a7- for planning ahead and it’s my to-go scheduler, and that’s it. Total about 18 dollars for 2024. Earlier days when I into planner tube, I was so obsessed by various kinds of diary & notes, but I started to make my own standard. 1. I don’t like bigger than a6 2. I don’t like midori because I’m afraid of white things, it might get dirty. 3. Traveler’s notebook is quite expensive for me, and I will get that later when I’m available for traveling. 4. I just need scheduling and recording only about study so it’s enough, I don’t need to decorate and write nice - and for future, I’m just practicing english cursive so that one day I can use in my diary ;) After I finish my study, I will get 1 traveler’s and 1 jibun techo! I’m sorry this comment got too long - anyway I love your channel!

What a great video! Many of my thoughts you have elucidated very well. Truthfully, I decided to watch the "planner" videos to come up with some new ideas - not to buy more planners; to find what might work better for me - not to get wrapped up in beautiful spreads with tons of stickers and washi and all that stuff. In fact, I learned fairly quickly to avoid the sticker/washi rabbit hole because it bulked my planner up so much that it made it almost unusable. I ended up taking out most of it so that I could continue using the planner - AS A PLANNER - for the rest of the year. Thank you for taking the time to make such a great video.

Hey, companies spend a FORTUNE on getting us to believe that we need stuff that (a) we probably don't, and (b) may not have even heard of. Don't feel bad when they succeed! But please keep posting critques of consumerism - the more we hear and think about it, the better chance we'll have of stopping ourselves from buying crap we don't need. (I recently realized that there's not even a snowball's chance in hell someone else will ever design a planner that works the same way my brain does, so I basically just look at planner reviews for ideas now. It:s been remarkably freeing.)

Thanks for talking about this in straightforward terms. I too think that consumerism in the world of planners has become terrible - under the influence of this community in 2023 I changed my planner almost every month and it was terrible, I started to lose deadlines and information. In 2024 I have Hobonichi Cousin, except for the summer vacation, when I had fewer responsibilities and used bujo and all the decorations just for fun. Now it's autumn and I'm back to the same Hobonichi Cousin 2024 and in it I plan to finish the year. Now I am intentionally looking for content creators who are more consistent, show their system that they are perfecting. I want to see how they deal with normal life, maybe I will pick up something for myself. This is a niche on YT, but I think that this niche will not disappear, but that it will grow, because more and more people are tired of looking at the pile of unused outdated planners. I fell down the rabbit hole a few years ago, but only in terms of watching lots of planner-related videos for ideas. I quickly realised I didn't have the artistic abilities to draw my own layouts, lots of colour would fry my brain, and sticker kits were a complete waste of time/money/page space. I decided to use filofax preprinted pages (always readily available and paper is paper), and my ideal is their A5 week on one with notes opposite, which is also available in a Leuchtturm for those who prefer book-bound. I gradually built up a small wardrobe of covers to change between for variety, but for my pages I pick a colour from my Vintage Sarasa set, pair it with a toning tombo or mildliner (I have a huge collection of around 6) and that's my colour scheme for the month. No laying-down of washi or tweezering of stickers, just a swipe of highlighter with a little dash of a pen-based design over the top will do instead of washi. It took a year or so to evolve into its current form, but it works and has done for several years now. It's a tool not an art project. And don't get me started on those who proudly unbox a new filofax and discard the inserts they come with as though they're contaminated!! I've been known to re-date an entire year so's not to waste a set of inserts...

Like Rachelle in Theory and Paper Joy PH are two of my favorites. I watch others, but I am not influenced by some of what they share. I did buy the Sterling Ink, and lo and behold, I cannot see the grid. So 2 christmas gifts taken care of at once! I am selling onwards two of my weeks, unless other nieces want them. I got two more back home in the States. I buy only new pens to match the aesthetic for that month, but I do not have full sets of pens except the ones I write with daily. Same with my colored pencils. I have also bought more stamps which are reusable rather than stickers. Plus stamps do not bulk up my planners. One is used for my daily gratitude journal and then in my other travellers notebook company is like a personal health tracker, with goals for the year and a little journal to do sticker journaling on the go. When I’m at home I do junk journaling so it’s totally different. I don’t take that with me for my every day day today. Journaling the travellers notebook company is suitable for me because I can change out the little journal notebooks and add new ones to what I need. I only really got into the planner space this year and decided on getting a hobonichi cousin/weeks for 2024. I tried to dip my toes into journaling with using a regular empty notebook at first and found that I hated making my own templates, and found that both the cousin and weeks would serve its purpose for me very well. I get really really confused and boggled seeing these planner videos with more than 5 planners under their belt. What are you going to even use all of those for? Are you not gonna get burnt out easily? Segwaying to hobonichi, it really really does blow my mind that people buy and hoard so many of their covers. Or really, just getting a lot of covers in general from different brands. I thought covers are utilized as an investment you buy once and use them for as long as you can before they wear out. But these people go as far as buy really expensive leather covers too... that really isn't very sustainable in the long run. They treat these covers like its a designer bag brand rather than fulfill them as what their utilized for.

That’s the same reason I got into Hobonichi too, I was doing regular notebooks but just needed some amount of structure and Hobonichi was perfect! i made my budget planner on the loose leaf A5 and i did buy the hobonichi weeks because its smaller, but i really think that you can do it with only one planner...my hyper focus made me want a bullet jornal too. the influence of the internet in our lives can be dangerous sometimes.

I just use a free notion. I watched some videos, downloaded some free templates, made them much better, and it works like a charm. I used to watch all these videos you're talking about, and never finish one planner before buying another one. Now, i actually do what it's in my tasks to do!

You are so right, only make more views if you are buying new stuff for the many brands. I work in a way to not buy planners, use what I have and and concentrate on been creative. Work on what it needs to do. No matter how hard I work my subscribership is low, even though my views are high. I even make planner covers, just keep up with the colour trends or themes. Also been a boy, has its issues. The biggest point I have on the brands is the space you need for all planners, like happy planner, you need space for all the stickers and book sets. Been a boy it is more limiting for choice, and end up using only a few stickers, what do I do with the rest. Even stickers bought on the cheap on eBay, where do I put the stuff. Just too much.

New Subbie here, my problem is that I kept watching videos and now I somehow have two different 2024 Hobonichis and 2 different 2024 Happy Planners. This is actually an improvement from last years 2023 “haul” which included Traveler’s Company And Midori Diary as well. I’m afraid I’m too confused to choose one (and that is something that would make me very happy) and I’m even thinking of getting a Leuchtturm and have been eyeing Jane’s agenda. I need real help. I’ve stopped even decorating them and actually using them has become an afterthought. If this group has some advice to give, I will listen intently.

Thank you so much for being here!!! It's ok. I can totally see how that can happen. We see the videos and we get crazy and are convinced we truly need all the planners and then it is overwhelming. Maybe you can focus on a few and use this year as a year to figure out what you really need as well as what you really enjoy and then not go through this next year. It's so tricky seeing things online and then having to convince yourself you don't need it. Hugs.

Social media is a bitch - it makes us forget what we actually need and makes room for companies to tell us what we shoud do. 😐 All the planners you own have been designed by specialists in time management. So each of them would be a good choice. Basic functions are to hold your appointments and your task lists. Do you need more? Trackers to develop good habits? A place for your children's activities? Do you journal? Choose the planner that seems best suited for these special things. Do you work in an office? Then choose the smallest one since you will be carrying it in your handbag. Do you intend to decorate it with stickers? Then anything that is bound like a book will not work, as it will no longer close properly after a few months. Make using the planner as simple as possible - then you will stick with it for longer. Is there a risk that you will stop using the planner because you have no time to decorate it every week? Then decorate only the first page(s). A Leuchtturm btw is a planner for people who find decorations distracting (like myself). If after some months your planner is not working out for you, try one of the other ones.

I don't planner hop; I don't understand how peoople can use seven planners and not getting confused! I have a system that works for me, and I enjoy watching videos to see how people use the planner that I do, or the planner that I may use in 2025 (i think ahead lol).

Oh it definitely is intentional. Advertisers pay KZbin to promote videos with their products in them, therefore if a creator wants to get views they better show that product as well. The world revolves around money and this is no different.
@kyra_james Жыл бұрын
YEP. It's so tricky because I'm sure most (maybe I'm naive) a lot of KZbinrs are driven by the love of creating etc., but money is such an influence.

I think it's super healthy to have this conversation! the consumerism frenesi is real. But just to give another point of view I enjoy watching videos with hundred dollar pens that I'll never buy and beautiful shimmery inks that I can't bother to get. The amount of options is so big now that I enjoy watching all the planners and notebooks I won't get and how people plan in them. Your weeks looks beautiful btw, for me, any used spread is satisfactory to watch :)
@kyra_james Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much :) that is a great perspective that I should try to learn - enjoy the creativity when watching the things you don't want or can't have. It makes sense, it is people's art or hobby and sharing it is one of the great things about KZbin.

Hmm so I've been planning going on 11 years with bujo. I dont go insane with any of it.We must keep in mind that those KZbinrs that constantly push content is their actual job. I won't call out any names but it's absolute marketing. This is a hobby. Love your content and yes you can absolutely grow without mindfucking folk.
@katzenfrau Жыл бұрын
also, the "bujos" people post online are *not* actually following the bullet journal system as created by Ryder Carroll. they're just diy art planners, but they co-oped the term to use the buzzword and hashtag for the algorithm. everything always comes down to the algorithm.
@kyra_james Жыл бұрын
OMG thank you this bugs me so much!!! When I first learned the actual Bullet Journal method years ago, I loved it for its simplicity and function. Over time I got so frustrated seeing how it is being used here. All of those videos and creators are awesome, but it should be called something else. Frick I needed to hear this so bad and I didn't realize it haha!
@kyra_james Жыл бұрын
Thank you and YES!!! I'm sure its a tricky balance for KZbinrs where it is their job, but, it's so out of hand these days the STACKS of planners.
@katzenfrau Жыл бұрын
@@kyra_james oh absolutely, the artwork is beautiful, and people can do whatever they want with their journals, but their posts deter people from even trying the bujo system bc they think it has to be a beautiful work of art... like no!! it's supposed to be a functional system tailored to your needs! there are a few creators who are true to the bujo system but they are very few and far between. the DIY art planner creators should definitely call themselves something else!

Choosing to run your life by plan and not by accident, to me, is one of the main points for having a planner or planners. Everything else is relative. As individuals, we should find what fits our needs for the moment. "Evolving" or growing is a natural part of life. Everyone, of course, is unique.
@kyra_james Жыл бұрын
Exactly, by plan and not by accident.

Also the planner creators who create a frenzy where you have to set an alarm to get the planner ordered fast - in like July or September (for the next year’s planner) - because they don’t make enough for the demand. No thanks. I won’t even watch YTs who create videos with those planners. If it’s not available year round and easy for anyone to buy, then nope.

I didn't even know that! There were a couple I googled just out of curiosity and saw that they weren't available, I didn't realize that was why.

While entitled to your thoughts and opinions, I wonder why you keep watching these things if you were satisfied with the way you were working. While you might not need 7 planners, I'm sure there are people who do. Its not up to you. This fomo is not the fault of the person making the video.
@Tria0526 Жыл бұрын
Serious question (not trying to be snarky)… how is this different from most things we buy? I do not have multiple planners, but how people spend their money is their business. I don’t “understand” a lot of purchases people make (especially as it relates to planners) but I just try to make sure that what I’m buying makes sense for me. Sometimes I’m successful and other times I fail - i.e the obscene amount of Christmas ornaments staring at me right now 🫤. Some would argue that no one needs a paper planner at all in this age of technology, but of course they don’t get a vote on what people “need” for their life. If you don’t participate in over buying, I’m genuinely curious why it bothers you that other people might?
@kyra_james Жыл бұрын
Very fair point, I get it. I do really appreciate that it is people's hobby and if they want to buy 20 then whatever. My reaction is, for me, based on the fact that I started watching more and more planner videos - partially for planner ideas and partially for layouts - and it felt like the more videos I watched the more I felt like I should have more and more planners. I don't think any one creator or any one video does this. But in bulk it starts to come across as buy buy buy. Obviously this is a symptom of social media in general but it seems like there is a fine line here between creating/enjoying, and consuming for the purpose of generating views and sales. I feel like a lot of videos leave me wanting to consume vs flourish in the creative side. My own fault, my own issue... which others have too. If that makes sense. I really appreciate you being here :)
@ccpippin307 Жыл бұрын
@@kyra_james...but of course content creators are going to make the content that gets the clicks...? It may be that you've just "noticed" this the current year but it happens EVERY season. A lot of people are actually really intentional with their spending and who they choose to watch on KZbin. Planner hoppers? I hit "don't recommend channel" because I'm not here for it. I curate my feed, I watch for things I love, and I know I'm not going to use washi tape ever. So the consumerism speaks to a larger problem but lol saying people make content because that content is what's popular ...? Of course they do. Who wants a video that sits at 200 views for three weeks. Being judgemental about the community you're a part of is super tacky.
