// WELCOME //
New here?? I would love to get to know you better!
I'll go first:
I'm Kaela, a Homeschool Graduate turned Homeschool Momma. My husband & I have 3 girls.
We are a Latino family, living our best life in a little 1930s fixer-upper in Texas.
Although we are a family of faith, we typically stick to secular resources in our homeschool.
I love homeschooling, pretty books, dance breaks, and turning my humble abode into a home.
Oh, and a lot of coffee!
I hope you'll stay awhile 🧡

Thank you! Very helpful! My two schoolers are almost 11 and 5. I don’t think I can do science and history together. They get play and meals together 😂. Also they do co op together which just happens for us in the woods and all kids are together for that. We do Art together but that’s about it. I would love some suggestions !

You might be surprised that you could potentially do science together. I wouldn't start history yet, for the 5yo, but you could bring in some themed things for them based around what your oldest is learning in history. For example, both kids could be covering earth science, but your oldest would be doing more challenging work, while your younger child may just read some age appropriate picture books with you about the earth, or watches videos with you and your older child. Maybe the younger child does a drawing, while the older child does a written assignment or worksheet. It may not be best to keep them in the same field of scientific study, but it also could work out really well and give you less topics to juggle. The 5yo may not be ready for formal history lessons, but could they learn about the same geographic region their older sibling is learning about in history? Could you all enjoy reading together or watching a video together about a particular person or event from history? Do you have any idea what, if any, curriculums you'll be using for those subjects? That may help narrow down suggestions even more.

@@OdetoAbode you are right! Yes, I have only been doing Bible for my 5 year old so far. And I’m trying to continue Bible History this year for her. My 10 year old will be doing Middle Ages.

@@CullenClan that's awesome! I would keep anything for the 5yo around middle ages really light - there's so many scary and sad things from that time! You could have the younger child learn about castles or other types of buildings/houses from that time. Maybe learn about how people cooked or the clothing they wore. The possibilities are really endless. They can be involved without really "studying history".

Thank you for this video. I was feeling overwhelmed by wanting to fit everything in the week and then feeling like a failure because I couldn't finish everything I had planned. Your video definitely gave me some ideas and inspiration on planning my week. I also like planning weekly. Thank you.

Would love to know how long it takes you to do an ideal day. Do you do some in morning and some later on in the afternoon or do you get it all done in the first half of the day? Do you you always do in same order? Do you do core subjects first? I have a 7 year old in 1st/2nd grade and I am finding it challenging to fit History and/or Science on most days. Thank you for all your input, it’s all so very helpful! ❤ Side note… do you schedule meeting prep or any weekday service as part of your homeschool?

So I will be fully transparent. We rarely get any work done in the morning. We are late sleepers and usually start our school day around 11:30/noon. An ideal school day, where we are really checking all the boxes, will last around 4-5 hours. That's with breaks, and neither of my kids are working that entire time, but that's how long it takes *me* to do it all with each of them. We usually break it up in to two parts, with a lunch break and play time between. So we will eat bkfst (brunch, lol), do our morning time & core subject work, and that all takes about 1.5-2hrs for me. My 1st grader is usually finished in 30-45 min. So she goes off to play until we reconvene for group subjects. Our next block, for group subjects, is where we cover science and/or history, literature, etc. That takes 1.5-3 hours depending on what I have for the day. I try very hard to break up our history and science so that we are never doing *that much* on any given day. But it is a challenge! I also want to let you know that I wouldn't do as much if I was only teaching a 1st/2nd. My oldest is in 4th, and so we've added more and more each year, and my 1st grader has work modified for her ability, that she usually finishes faster. Maybe you could try to alternate history and science days? We did that for a while. You could also try to incorporate any additional reading you have for those subjects into bedtime reading or weekend reading to lessen your loads on weekdays.

Oh you are using dash into reading! Ive been looking to see how other people use dash into learning! How intense do you think it is? Should it be used as a stand alone reading curriculum? Or in conjunction with something else? I was thinking of using dash into learning along with the good and the beautiful LA... But im a little worried that might be too much. 🤔 Would love to hear your thoughts and experience!

I used Dash as a supplement to and a break between All About Reading levels. We loved it! Personally, I don't think I would use it as a stand-alone, only because I love how thorough AAR is, comparatively. However, it could definitely work as a stand-alone, depending on the child. I do touch on this a little more in my recent update video :)
