This reminds me of when I would drive East before dawn, on my way to airshows the other side of the UK. I'd get a sunrise and see the contrails of airliners on their way to Heathrow and mainland Europe. It certainly is a special time of the day.

Dude, your editing is so far ahead and so much better than any other KZbin channel out there. You are a really good story teller and I find myself feeling as if I’m right there. I’m actually a commercial pilot myself working on CFI. Great videos man!

Not just the editing - think of what a pain in the arse it would be to stage a camera outside your hangar at 4AM, and then have to re-drive your car around to capture footage of "arriving at the hangar" :)

I was a precision landing pilot on my flight team in college and we would start our practices at 6am every day, frequently watching sunrises from the pattern. The pilots were all big fans of HBO’s “From the Earth to the Moon” and at sunrise, one would key the mike and quote Alan Bean from the miniseries: “My, that sun is bright!” Inevitably, another pilot would chime in and respond: “Feels good!”

A friend of mine had a very nice 172 , he wanted to take a trip , so we did . We left Orlando Exec. and worked our way to ElPaso . He wanted to go on , I told him no . We were flying over mountains in Jan. at night , not me . The next morning we made our way to messa Ari . Very nice trip . next day went to the grand canyon . Returned the next day to El Paso again . The weather was good . about 60 miles out we went IFR on top and it was getting dark , no problem but I got a bunch of IFR actual , kinda fun really . So long trips in a 172 is ok .

I've had the chance to fly with friends on sunset then sunrise in the same week above the Pyrénées in southern France, it really is georgous, and keep in mind that you can experience it even during aeronautical day, you don't necessarely need a night training to do that ! Mind you, you still need to respect the local sunrise time

Flight planning is daunting at first. Especially, with nothing but paper. There is a lot of information. After a few flights planned, it becomes second nature. I did all paper while getting my private. By the time I got weather, picked my route and points, did the calculations, filed, briefed, and pre-flighted it took about 1.5 hours. The only thing I would ding most schools for is handing students the info on a silver platter (clipboard or folder). Students should go out and find all the info themselves a few times. If you can't name the sections in your POH by title and number, then I would highly recommend getting very familiar with it. In the POH, you will find info that foreflight will not have, such as floor loading maximums. Questions that could be asked in your oral or even a ramp check. I was asked about floor loading and even POH procedures on failed start attempts in an oral. Everything in there is fair game.

Another outstanding video Josh. I agree solo long X-country is the best. Flew Albuquerque to Oshkosh this year. Left at 4am watched the sun rise and kept on flying all the way to OSH in one day and 4 stops over 1000 miles. I plan my trips exactly the same way. Point A-Point B then use the ruler at 350 miles and start looking for airports. Every trip I have to take for work I always have the option for commercial but take an extra day on both ends and try to fly N734DV C172/180 every chance I get. Keep up the great work. Headed out to Las Vegas NV via Page AZ in Jan. with a stop at Marble Canyon just because you showed us what a kool little place it was and the breakfast sounds outstanding. Fly safe young man and keep the videos coming. Happy Holiday.

Nice video (as always), Last May, I purchased my Piper 160 that was parked at Hooks and flew it back to Bartow FL. With a CFI I had met the day before there. (My CFI was unable to make the trip at the last minute). We flew a little further north than you did, but was a great trip, especially for a new pilot with only 25 hours.

I attempted to learn to fly albeit a bit late in life. In my 1.3 hours of time from January of 2019 I learned a few things about myself in the air. I felt overwhelmed at what was going on in the cockpit and my landings were atrocious. I quit flying right after my first attempt. I had a capable aircraft with a very patient and capable instructor. Watching these videos makes me want to put my fears aside and get back in the seat. I'm better than just 1.3 hours I'm sure.

Get back at it. I'm 50 and took my first lessons in 1988 and did the same thing. You'll find plenty of help on youtube. This channel, Finer Points, Cyndy Hollman, Friendly Skies, Flight Chops, etc. I'm almost to my PPL and while I still spook myself a bit, I'm making it. Ask your instructor what you'll do while you're out so you can do some homework...that helps for me.
