I'm always curious about these lodges and who owns them and how did they acquire such a large estate? How many acres is that lodge on private land? We have chickens and those first ones you saw inside in the brooder looked like classic meat birds. They are ready to process in only 8 weeks for meat. They basically gorge on food, grow fat, and then are processed. The red hens look like red sex links, which means they are sexable at hatching. Female chicks are red and males are white. I saw they have a big incubator next to the wall that they use to hatch their own eggs. Looks like they have the 300 egg layers in chicken tractors on pastures, but they would still need to give them feed. I wonder where they get organic chicken feed in Kenya...It's unhealthy to feed them only corn, so I wonder what company grows organic grains and pulses for animal feed. They need high protein for egg production, which is usually the 'peas' that are feeds. Looks like a really fun place to visit!!

So this is quite a multi-layered question and I can only give vague answers I’m afraid as I don’t get too involved in either property ownership, or farming 😉 But the owners of the lodge are a retired Australian couple and their three sons. Typically when you buy or lease a property in a national park you also are required to pay quite a substantial amount towards the conservation and to local communities as well (but this has different requirements in different areas/parks. I’m sure they would be happy to go into detail with you about what it takes to own/run a place like that though. Regarding the chickens, I don’t know too much but last time we did a tour they showed how much of the bird feed comes from the farm itself. They grow a very nutritious algae on ponds which is dried and added to feed, as well as breeding fly larvae on site themselves. There’s a lot more to it than that, but a lot of the information probably went over my head 😂

Aww she tried hard to have a nice time but you can tell she’s very ill. Poor chick. Is she all better now? I was also the sickest I’ve ever been recently too. There’s been some terrible strains going around Ireland/UK
