When my son, Lucas, celebrated his 18th birthday, he officially became an adult. He participated in some autism jobs for a few years prior to his 18th birthday through his IEP at school. The next summer as part of an Extended School Program (ESY), Lucas started volunteering at a local hotel for an hour each week. There were all kinds of jobs at the hotel providing lots of opportunities for Lucas and his team to explore vocational tasks and autism jobs.

Dr. Mary Barbera. I fell into the autism world as an autism mom in 1999 when her first-born son, Lucas, was diagnosed with autism. Since then, she became a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst and best-selling author of The Verbal Behavior Approach. Since 2015, she’s created 3 autism online courses based on applied behavior analysis for professionals and "gung-ho" parents. Whether you’re looking for autism parenting strategies, working with development delays in children, or in search of autism help for professionals, I can encourage you to subscribe to the channel and join me on my journey. I’ll be providing weekly autism resources that you don’t want to miss.

The high rate of unemployment for adults with autism is a global issue:lack of training opportunities, lack of apprenticeships, leaders in government changing criteria for a grading system or access arrangements being surreal;lack of volunteering spaces, lack of inclusiveness and so on.

I am on the Autistic Spectrum and Ive lost 11 of my jobs from being too slow, missing social ques or being misunderstood. It's gotten so bad that I have to resort to trying to get some kind of safety net like SSI or Disability in order to become independent and on my own. I would love to work, but these retail and fast food restaurants are just getting rid of me left and right. If I could I would go back to Alabama, because people were more caring and like family there then in Michigan or Ohio.

@@shanesorensen7878I thought about becoming a farmer. I’ve been told it’s a lot of work. I’m considering it. I’m looking for a slow paced career.

@@marybarbera update* I am on disability now and doing way better now. I don't work, but I just wish I knew I was Autistic earlier in my life.

@@supaipai420😮 I wasn’t expecting to see an update! I am in a similar situation, but have no advocacy, care or support from family. They are purposefully throwing me to the wolves and don’t believe or accept my new diagnosis. But believe they are right I’m adhd. I live in Mississippi, and I hear there are barely any jobs available in Hattiesburg. And the few that are around, don’t pay enough to make rent, $8/hr still… Did you go back to Alabama? What did they expect of you to qualify for that?

I'm far beyond just graduated from highschool. I have been start with High functioning autism and finding meaningful work. I have been job hopping because I have no direction for work. I have been a military logistics clerk but I don't like that field at all. My parents ignored my abilities when I was young which was good with facts especially sports stats and interested in animal s.

How do you get an aide? My therapist suspects I have asd 2, and would love to bring my aide to work to help with interpretive difficulties, and help me be more efficient, I know I am capable, but I need supports to thrive.

Adhd make wonderful entrepreneurs. Most of the company founders you know have adhd. Their hyper fixation makes them the best at what they do and if they own the company they can hire people to do the things that bore them. Find their passion.
