Well, consider that Vlad and his dad raided Ottoman, they might have taken Indian expatriates as well. Since Ottoman had links to India through either Silk Road (it had to go through Persia but might attract Indians) or Red Sea (they had Egypt).

The story about Vlad Tepes inviting people to a great feast for free and than burning them alive is not about gypsies, it's about all the beggars and thieves, regardless of their origins. One fact about Vlad and the gypsies is that he offered them freedom in exchange for service in the military, which they happily accepted and created their own regiment with the crow mounted on a pole as their symbol. Upon first contact with the janissaries they instantly broke though, hence the popular saying: brave like a crow on a stick (when you're calling someone a coward).

Those are propaganda stories like the ones that gave birth to the vampire myth(drinking blood etc). Historians on the other hand, know that Vlad was always heavily outnumbered by the Turks and needed realistic ways of getting more soldiers. In this case it was freedom and spoils of war. The gypsies not only happily accepted but asked to be put on the front line themselves bragging about how they would scatter the ottomans. Fun Fact - The Institution of "King of the Gypsies" was already present in Poland as early as the XVIIth century. The Gypsy King was officially nominated by the King of Poland himself. He was however most of the time a random nobleman who wasn't even a Gypsy, and his job was to collect taxes from the Romani, and represent their interest in the Polish Parliment. The practice of Gypsy King was disbanded after the Polish Partitions, but it was brought back along with the regaining of independence of Poland in 1918.

@@omegapc9520 The Scottish Highlander thing is kind of a myth. Most backcountry settlers came from Northern England and Northern Ireland and actually settled much closer to the coast than what we today think of as Appalachia. This, of course, was a time before canals or railroads, when anyplace ships couldn't get to from the sea was considered "roughing it." The issue of settlement in the west was less of settlers actually living there and more of real estate developers snatching up claims where they thought settlers *would* live in the future.

It's simple why there isn't a Romani state; they don't have a cohesive religious, linguistic, historical, and geographic identity unlike the Jews. The gap between Ashkenazi and Sephardi is relatively small compared to the groups of Romani. Diaspora Jews could always look back to their ancestral homeland or read the Torah as unifiers, whereas the Romani really can't do anything like this.

As with most things surrounding Romania, it's either too difficult to read on about from my part of the world, or all I can find is slander. If I google "romanian man" first thing that shows up is british media crime news, that sort of thing always irked me about your country's reputation in west europe, and the tigan fearmongering, romonophobia as one put it, adds to that. After I made those comments I googled some more about the gypsy and came across some interesting interpretations as to why countries hate them so much, and it's similar to jews from before WWII. Hopefully those more well off gypsies will be able to help uplift the people's image.

World Roma don't need a country. They need to be understood, not scorned. Some of us have talents from that past so long ago that contributed much to world entertainments today. When we have enough to eat and a home to live in, we are good people the same as others. I identify more with Roma than any other culture because of my nature. Survival is the game we are all in. Roma are the great survivors among humanity. We have come a long way from Northern India. My lot passed through Persia in 439 A.D. We survived all the attacks from village people on the way to Europe. The Nazis killed about half a million of us in the Holocaust. But we are still here among you. We don't need a king. We need a voice. This is being established now. We are a part of you. You are part of us. We cannot be separated from humanity because we too ~ are human. Johnny

Egypt? those are also not our ideas. also Europeans trying to get rid of us. in reality, our origin is a vanity fact - something nice to know, but has little to no impact on our contemporary cultures or lives. there might have been historical support by SOME Roma for these silly ideas (e.g. the ones becoming "kings"). but absolutely not a large portion 😁 we migrate to find a home where we can feel safe. and we continue migrating because there are very few places where we find safety.

@@rightwingreactionary Roma Americans live perfectly fine. There are an estimated one million americans with Roma heritage and they all live normal lives with a nice house, paying jobs, etc. You wanna know why they were able to make a living for themselves? Because Roma aren't as heavily discriminated against here as in Europe. Most Americans don't even know Roma exist, so when u tell someone ur Roma they are interested and think it's cool. Roma Americans are able to get jobs without worrying about their race being a factor if they get the job or not, unlike Europe. It's almost as if Roma were treated like human beings then they would be able to thrive. Europe hasn't gotten to hang of that yet. Yall still s*gregate Roma kids from white kids in schools, and teach Roma kids at a lower level then white kids bc u believe that Roma are less intelligent. And if Roma kids do manage to go to a good school they get ignored or b*aten by r*cists like u. What's with everyone wanting to take a piece of Ethiopia?! Also: A way of having the Romani population flourish is by making education mandatory. For far too long I've heard of Romani kids being pulled from school in order to get married /work. That should not be allowed, they're not different from other kids/people. The problem is poverty and education, their birth rates go sky high mostly because they're living in poverty. Not to mention, people with a higher education usually have less kids so if any of you want to stop them from replacing y'all(more precisely your country) work on them being able to get education.

The "King of the Gypsies" is a silly concept, many random Romani have claimed the title "King of the Gypsies", often to deal with an immediate threat by outsiders, they don't correspond to any "monarchy" we would recognize. And a country for the Romani is problematic - many Romani don't WANT a homeland, they embrace nomadic life. Morris Berman's "Wandering God" claims, among other things, that nomadic living is more often ideological choice rather than an economic necessity, and most modern nomadic societies began as countercultural movements that adopted travelling as a rejection of the social order (and to avoid government control). Thus they are feared and hated by governments (and publics) that can't track and control them.

This is very interesting. Here is what Wikipedia says about Romani in the USA: It is estimated that there are one million Romani people in the United States, occasionally known as American Gypsies. Though the Romani population in the United States has largely assimilated into American society, the largest concentrations are in Southern California, the Pacific Northwest, Texas, Florida and the Northeast as well as in cities such as Chicago and St. Louis.[1][4] The largest wave of Romani immigrants came from the Balkan region in the late 19th century following the abolition of Romani slavery in 1864,[1] which occurred as the Ottoman Empire was weakening. Romani immigration to the United States has continued at a steady rate ever since, with an increase of Romani immigration occurring in the late 20th century following the collapse of communism in Central and Eastern Europe.[1] The size of the Romani American population and the absence of a historical and cultural presence, such as the Romani have in Europe, make Americans largely unaware of the existence of the Romani as a people.[1] The term's lack of significance within the United States prevents many Romani from using the term around non-Romani: identifying themselves by nationality rather than heritage.[5]

The second-wave of Asian migration to America is a bit wayward if I grasp it correctly. The premise is that thousands of years after Central Asians followed megafauna across the Bering Strait to North America a more traditionally East Asian population were pressured to cross the Bering Straits. But when these migrants arrived on the new continent, the already settled Native Americans did not permit them to travel much south of the Arctic Circle and thus they were trapped in the Arctic Circle, in which time they adapted to some of the most extreme weather imaginable. I’ve got to imagine that when those East Asians decides to migrate they weren’t planning on settling for the Arctic Circle.

I mean a Romani state isn't unheard of like I can name a people group in the USA who have their own independent rules and council and at one point were semi independent due to persecution of their people (cough cough Mormons) for they call the head of the religion the President of the Mormon's and almost became a buffer state name deseret. The people even tried to make a origin story saying the indigious people of America was a lost tribe of Israel who was punished, and their founder was lead to golden tablets where this lost tribe buried their rituals and stories. (I learned this through my grandfather and an attempted conversion by the California Mormon church)
