It's spring, the weather is getting warmer, the sun is out, THIS IS THE YEAR! It's time to start your own mini homestead and learn how to grow food at home! In this video I hope to share the tips and encouragement to get outside and plant a garden right now. There's never been a better time to take steps toward being more self-reliant, self-sufficient and learn how to grow your own food. Homesteading, Organic gardening and permaculture farming is not rocket science, you don't need a ton of tools or knowledge, you just need to get started. To plant your very own garden, you just need a shovel, some dirt, sunlight and water. Growing fruits and vegetables at home is much easier than you might think, whether you've got a green thumb or a black one. Organic gardening is also a great way to get outside and do something that feels productive and important. Whether you want a giant garden or you've got a tiny grass patch, here are a few tips for beginner gardeners. Things I cover in a bit more detail are organic pest control, planting bare root strawberries, bare root grapes, planting asparagus crowns, and what seeds to plant right now.

I love gardening and I've been procrastinating due to mental health (counterintuitive, huh?). I discovered you Friday. It's Sunday, and I've planted squash/Zucchini, bush beans, tomatoes, watermelon, snap peas, and many sprinkles of flowers (in addition to TONS of house work)!! The only thing it cost me was some cheap straw for mulch (because I'm lazy and impatient). You're right. I had seeds lying around, tons of dirt, compost material, trellis material, etc., and none of it was doing anything. Now, two afternoons of mindlessly happy and determined labor, I'm invigorated and if it lives, it feeds us. If it doesn't, oh well! It fed my soul and I'll just try again with more experiments later! ❤ Thanks, Annie.

This video is perfect, I've wanted to garden for so long and always felt overwhelmed by how complicated it is. Last year I started a few potted plants and finally accepted the advice you gave here that my friends also told me - to just plant stuff, see what happens and learn from that! I have some garlic that sprouted in my pantry, may as well throw it in the dirt and see how it does 😁 broccoli is some me and my children love, we have at least one more near frost so I'm willing to risk a few broccoli seeds too ❤

I’ve been putting off my seeding because a.) it’s been cold and b.) I wasn’t sure where I was going to be able to put the plants once I had ‘em started. So far, in crappy weather I’ve managed to move the wood pile, demo one of the 2 sheds we had blow over in the wind, cut back the roses & lilac that are too close to the house, prep a new area to park our bus, tossed some old seeds in an area that I prepped last Fall, and fixed all the spots in our gravel driveway where people got stuck during the winter. So, while I’m a little jealous of your sunshine & greenery, I can say for sure that YES you have inspired me to get outside and do what I can. Thank you for that. 🙏

Yeah, just plant it! It might take and grow. The quality of the soil can be the difference. My soil is pretty heavy clay based. I keep stirring in organic stuff, and sand... things grow, and sometimes die. pH matters for my Blueberries. The Asparagus is ten feet away, but not affected by the sulfur I put down for the Blueberries. Just keep gardening, you learn if you observe and keep a log of what works. Love your vids. Thanks!

I always tease my wife that she BURIES the plants because they just don't know their dead yet! One argument we always get into is watering, if she (or we) forgets to water in the morning and they are drooping and whithered I'll water the soil in the middle of the day because they are so badly dehydrated and wilting. What do you do for plants that you see needing water during the hot days that .. can't imagine that you would forget to water anything with roots or hooves .

I don't live in washington anymore, I moved to TN five years ago, our old house has been bought and sold twice since we left. I'm happy to continue to update you on my current garden at my own house, which, five years later is also doing quite well ;)

yes, but that whole area is pretty well fenced, so I'll only add extra if I need to :)

Aren't you concerned about weeds reseeding themselves by leaving them to decompose?
@AnneofAllTrades
@AnneofAllTrades 4 жыл бұрын
sure, but what's the harm as long as they aren't competing with the plants that are there?

Dirt, dirt and more dirt. Young lady if you're going to do gardening vids then start to use the correct words. "Dirt" is what you find under your fingernails. Soil is the wonderful life giving material that we grow our plants in. Other than that good vid. I'm about to go out to my garden here in SW Washington. Have several new raised beds to put together for the upcoming season. LOTS of wheelbarrows loads of composted wood chips and fresh soil and hopefully some well aged horse manure. Contact your local county extension department for suggestions on what verity of plants to be planting there. Many of the verities you are used to using here in the Great Pacific Northwest will not do as well because of the heat. But fear not, if using the right verity you will be amazed at how well the correct plants will prosper. Good luck,looking forward to seeing your next vid.

Here’s a little unsolicited advice, don’t sweat small stuff like terminology, it will help you live longer ;)

@@AnneofAllTrades maybe, but there is a reason to use the correct term in this situation. Dirt is essentially dead material void of nutrients. Soil on the other hand is essentially a mass of living organisms. That is a very important difference. I'm not disrespecting you but trying to help you. Using the correct terms will help grow you viewership in the long run. That's all. Heck, it's your channel so do as you please. But you might consider looking at any help anyone is willing to give you. Just a thought. Best of luck.👍🌞🌞🌞
