I love this long-form format! This episode is excellent as it tackles the situation of "the beast lies in details"! Though I know somehow popular option here is shorter episode, I'd love to see more of this level of depth in upcoming episodes

Doc, what about noodles? Can people with CKD Stage 3 and 4 eat noodles? Please give us the reason(s). Thanks very much
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth Жыл бұрын
Noodles can definitely be part of a kidney diet. There are so many types of noodles, white, whole grain, noodles made out of legumes, zucchini noodles, etc that all have varying potassium levels. Most important thing is what the noodles are paired with. Should be with a good amount of non starchy veggies (things like asparagus, bell pepper, green beans, onion, etc).

I had a transplant about 2 years ago. All labs are good except potassium and my hemoglobin and hematocrit which are too high but I am doing therapeutic phlebotomy for that. My potassium is high. I have taken lokelma and now Sodium polystyrene powder. My question is would the intermittent fasting you talked about where you eat 30% in the morning then fast the rest of the day 3 days a week help lower potassium or would fasting for 24 hours once a week help? I have watched your videos for many years and appreciate all the information about diet ya’ll give us . I try to keep my potassium under 1000 a day but maybe it needs to go lower. Thanks.

Hi doc, What kind the. Protein bar good for dialysis , should take plant base or isolate? God bless all

Hello! We have an episode on protein supplements you can check out for some info on what to look for in a protein supplement. And definitely check with the dialysis dietitian. They should be able to recommend one specific to your nutrient needs.

Can a pt w/ stage 3 KD eat cooked tomatoes, avocados, bananas, in moderation?
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth Жыл бұрын
Many people with stage 3 CKD don't have any potassium restriction and can fit those food into their diet in moderation. Always base it off your labs! :)

Good morning... have stage CKD at 62 GFR, I'm 62 yrs old. My potassium level is 3.9. Do I restrict or control my potassium food intake? Please advise. Thank you
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth Жыл бұрын
3.9 potassium is a normal level :) People are generally not recommended to restrict potassium intake unless blood levels are elevated. Always check with your physician though as it will depend on trend in labs!

What are the best sources of potassium and what are the best bio-available sources? How do you know if you start getting too much or not enough? Like if a cup of cooked Bok choy potentially has 630 mg. how much generally gets absorbed? What about if you have a soda with phosphates. Like a pepsi. Those have about 60 mg yea? You always say added phosphates from chemicals are super bad and highly absorb-able? With a slow moving juicer that removes all of the pulp. Are there good sources of nutrition info to see how much you are getting just in the juice with no pulp.

Most of the potassium ingested is absorbed. There is no need to worry about not absorbing enough potassium from the food eaten. Phosphorus additives (like phosphoric acid or disodium phosphate) are absorbed 90-100% and are recommended to avoid. Pepsi is an example of a soda that contains phosphoric acid. You can look up nutrition info for juices on Cronometer or USDA Database :)

What about if chloride is high: 109?
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth Жыл бұрын
Chloride can be high for s number of reasons. Dehydration and metabolic acidosis are two possible causes. Definitely discuss with your physician so they can help determine what is the cause for you.

I just found out my potassium is 5.7, my GFR IS 45 and I have one kidney. Your information was very helpful, I was listening to your program on curcumin that I have been taking for a long time but after I added pepper to it my GFR went from 55to 45 and the same time I doubled the berberine dose. Not sure what could cause the drop in GFR. I didn't do any other changes.
