I was diagnosed with stage 3 back in 2017 but was never told until last year. I switched PCPs and got a nephrologist. It hasn't done me any good. I'm sitting here now, intensely itching all over, and have the numbness and tingling you are talking about as well. I even consulted with a dietician. None of these professionals have addressed the kidney diet as you are doing. The dietician is the only one who came close. I'm reluctant to keep going to the nephrologist as he didn't even attempt to steer me in any sort of direction that would help me with this disease. He just said that I should only worry when I see the toilet bowl full of masses of frothy bubbles after urination. Thank you for making your journey available for others to glean from. Do you know of any other ways to check potassium levels without a monthly blood test? I'm so skeptical of doctors at this point. I've lost my trust in them.

Ugh For lowering creatinine-eat fruits and veggies and skip meat (but the "best veggies" are full of potassium). For lowering potassium-avoid most of the dark greens, fruits and "good" veggies. For lowering blood sugar (diabetics)-avoid grains, breads, rice, pasta, ANYTHING starchy. (This is my life: don't eat any meats, don't eat most veggies or fruits, don't eat any grains, dairy, or starchy foods. Yay: that leaves cabbage and water, LOL)

I have hyperkalemia episodes... never really felt it, but I had surgery last spring that was almost cancelled because I was one percentage point above the normal level. The anesthesiologist wouldn't administer any drugs until I tested below the threshold. Luckily, it had been long enough from the original test to return to normal... phew. It really is different for every person how they react to this but it is quite dangerous!

Thanks Jim!! Would really like to hear more specifics regarding what kinds of meals are ideal for someone with ADPKD kidneys, and having both kidneys that are 2X over normal size (21.5 cm). I'm somewhat confused about what a keto diet needs to consist of. There is way too much misinformation circulating. Not sure what the best approach is. I'm 160 lbs, and not allergic to any foods. Please advise. Are there better times than others for keto's eating windows? I really don't care what this requires. I'm willing and fully ready to do something, anything to shrink these kidneys. No renal dietician anywhere near here. Unfortunately, I had zero repour with my Nephrologist, besides a huge language barrier, he never mentioned ANYTHING about diet. Put me on Jynarque, however, had reaction to this medication and yet still gave it 6 months before ceasing. Don't know what I'm supposed to be doing. I'm going to UNO (University of Northern Omaha) to a nephrology specialist within two weeks.

It all comes down to portion control. You need to look at your current labs and determine how much potassium you should be eating each day, as well as the MAX not to exceed. Then enjoy! Using a food tracking app will help keep you above your minimum and below your daily max.

So far I’ve been able to stay in stage 3 . My question is would I benefit from the keto diet . My biggest problem is I work full time and I don’t know how to eat right me n my boyfriend that lives and works with me ( factory) usually are so tired by the end of the day, we just grab something on the way home which is mostly fast food. I already know that’s bad . I did just order the pro renal D vitamins from Amazon. Was taking about 28 different vitamins and minerals until I watched your channel and saw it was so bad . Sorry this is so long. Thank you so much for your time Sincerely Carol M

@DADVICETV

The first step is to stop the damage - is her blood pressure, blood sugar, and the underlying cause of her kidney damage being managed and controlled? High BP and uncontrolled diabetes are the top 2 leading causes of kidney damage. Once that is done diet is important to look at. At stage 5 it was important for me to limit animal protein - and if I could go back I would have removed all red meat, turkey, and chicken from my diet except eggs. She should be eating organic when possible, gluten-free, NO artificial ingredients (no artificial colors, flavors, preservatives), and no highly processed foods (traditional frozen meals, hot dogs, boxed mixes, etc.). Read the labels - if you see PHOS in the ingredients, at stage 5 skip that item. Only drink water, no juice, no soda, just water. Her doctors should have limited her sodium to help prevent fluid retention - usually 1500mg a day is common. Don't add salt and watch the salt in the foods to stay within her limit. I have a grocery shopping list that may help: www.dadvicetv.com/grocery-shopping-kidney-disease - these are kidney friendly low-inflammation foods you can use on her diet. You need to see her bloodwork and adjust her diet accordingly with her doctors. I have a video on optimizing your renal diet based on your labs. It is also important to accept that sometimes Dialysis IS THE RIGHT choice. If her kidneys are too low and her labs too far out of the standard range, her doctors may put her on dialysis. It isn't forever - the right diet could help her get off dialysis in time. IT IS DONE but few doctors talk about it. I've asked doctors WHY they don't push diet and several have told me because it is a losing battle - people won't stick to the diet or make the lifestyle changes (like stop smoking). From my experience, those with support from family are the ones who have the best chances to get off dialysis.

Questions : How can I estimate how much potassium is in one cup of cauliflower or any other allowed vegetables to help keep tabs on my daily allowance of Potassium ? I don't eat packet food at all. Having 6 - 7 ounces of meat a day is easy for me. I feel it's the right amount. I usually have 2 cups of vegetables once a day with my protein then lunch usually comprises of 2 eggs with bacon (Natural and low nitrate) although I sometimes just have the eggs. When trying to keep potassium, salt & phosphorus in balance so I don't overdo it, it can be a learning curve by listening to our bodies and going by the way we feel. One day may be too much of these and the next day could be a lot less so it pretty much evens out throughout the week. The symptoms you have mentioned when the body has a build up of potassium, Dr. Berg has said that when having those same symptoms it means they are low in potassium. This is where information can be so conflicted. I will take on what you are saying because you have lived it and can see the results from doing what you are doing. Thank you for doing these videos. I really appreciate your hard work.
@DADVICETV
@DADVICETV 5 жыл бұрын
A lot of the same symptoms from having too much of something also appear when we have too little, so it can be difficult to determine if you are too high or too low without getting a blood test. Finding that right balance is the real goal, even though doctors focus so much on "too much". As for measuring, the best way I have found is with a food scale. You can determine the number of mg of what you are going to eat, then look up the nutritional values online. Google actually has a direct connection with some amazing nutritional information and can let you specify the quality (mg, cups, etc.) and find out the potassium, phosphorous, sodium, etc. You'll quickly learn and be able to judge it by eye after looking it up a few times. I also track what I eat in an App - then if I am too high or too low, I can look back and make adjustments.

@DADVICETV

Brewed coffee is great and counts as water. An 8 oz cup of coffee had just over 100mg of Potassium - so fitting 2 into your day is easy. What you have to watch out for is the additives - those can be loaded with Sugar and Phosphorus chemicals (which you absorb so much more of compared to natural sources).

@DADVICETV

Very few people have heard of Moringa - but in my search for everything that could possibly help me it was one of many dietary supplements I looked into. I had to go back into my notes to see why I'm not using it, and while it looks very promising with it's high nutrient content, there is research showing it can possibly cause kidney damage. For me, that made it a NO for adding to my diet. I would not recommend using it.

My calcium is high as well as my potassium. How do we lower that?
@DADVICETV
@DADVICETV 4 жыл бұрын
Those are both controlled first through diet (eating the right amount of Potassium and Calcium...and not too much, along with drinking the right amount of fluids). Some people with severe kidney function reduction may need binders to help - these are medications taken just before (or with) a meal. The binders reduce how much is absorbed into your blood stream. I would start with a renal dietitian to see what modifications you can make to your diet, then see about binders if necessary. And don't overlook proper hydration - if you get dehydrated you help these build up in your system. A renal dietitian or your doctor can help you calculate the right amount of water to drink each day based on your kidney function, overall health, and activity level. Best of luck!

@DADVICETV 5 жыл бұрын
Very good question - and one I had for my doctors when I got started (I love grapes and I love raisins). It comes down to density. 1 Cup of grapes is mostly water and has about 1/9th the potassium of 1 cup of raisins. The grapes also work as an anti-inflammatory, but raisins don't. You could say that 1 grape = 1 raisin as far as potassium is concerned, but people don't eat 15 raisins, they eat handfuls of raisins. Remember, potassium itself isn't bad. It actually is protective until your GFR gets low, then TOO MUCH is bad.

Shoot me an email to james@dadvicetv.com and I'll send you links to what I took. I did use supplements with my doctor and I need to explain them and how to talk to your moms doctor to see if any may help her. Supplements serve a purpose, but it is a specific purpose. There are none that will directly help the kidneys or fix things. You need to break down your moms condition into the little problems and then see if any supplements address those smaller issues. Most important though IS DIET modified to her labs. Also, chances are she needs a renal friendly multi-vitamin like ProRenal+D (with Omega 3 if she has heart issues - without the Omega 3 if her heart is fine). You can read more about ProRenal+D at www.dadvicetv.com/supplements

Hi, I had a couple of questions, which type of olives are good for me? the green ones or black ones. And did I see you mention somewhere that radishes are good to have? And also I am having a hard time stopping dark colored cola's 100%. Can I have a fountain pepsi once in a while since it has more water in it and ice cubes verses a can pepsi which is stronger? I'm early stage 4 and am doing my best to consider everything I eat and drink. Thanks for your help.

Olives tend to be high in sodium, though their fat is good for your body and can be helpful if you are on a Keto diet (my doctors allowed me to try a modified Keto at Stage 3). I love olives and do occasionally snack on both green and black olives. Always watch your portions - that is the key. You can have most anything in the right portion...it just may not be large enough to make it worth it. Radishes are GREAT - add crunch, the spice, loaded with lots of good stuff for your body. I eat them right out of the bag like mini apples. Really try to get off that dark colored soda - it is SO SO SO bad for you. It's loaded with sugar, chemicals, and so much you don't need. I drank lots of Dr. Pepper every day - loved it - but gave it up cold turkey. Now just thinking of drinking a dark soda is scary to me, I can't believe I was drinking it, and so much. My recommendation to help is to visit a Dialysis center and donate a day to help out. See people getting Dialysis, watch their faces, see how draining it is - you will see it, you don't even have to talk to them. It will change you - you will be stronger to make these difficult changes so that you don't have to go on dialysis. For some dialysis is a must, but for many, diet and lifestyle changes can prevent dialysis. Choose to fight CKD - Losing is not an option.

Think in dialysis every time you fancy a dark cola. It doesn't matter how much water you add. Poison is poison even if laced with sugar and ice cubes. And be careful with olives because if you have high blood pressure they are too rich in salt.

It all comes comes to your labs. You need to eat enough to give your body what it needs but not too much of certain nutrients…and those amounts and nutrients will depend on your health, labs, lifestyle, and other factors. A renal dietitian can help you figure this out - they you eat based on nutrition. Some foods will consume a lot of your daily allowances and you have to eat less, others consume so little you can eat a lot more.

I think this video and food list (with a dietitian customization worksheet) will help: www.dadvicetv.com/food - You will want to find your daily potassium min and max allowances, then you can eat up to your max. What your max is will depend on your last labs - those with a higher GFR will have a higher max. Fitting in a banana is probably pretty easy for most people at stage 4.

Try to stay away from packet food as it makes it easier if you just eat fresh, cooked vegetables that are in this video from James. Preservatives, added ingredients that just are not good for anyone to be eating. A lot of them have too much sodium. If you must have packet food then please read the label. The more ingredients that are in there is an indication that it isn't good for you. Iused to eat instant mash many years ago but no way would I touch them today. Diet change isn't easy at first but you will be amazed how it gets easier & easier to the point that it feels natural to not eat the same diet that others eat with high carbs, additives, sugar etc.

@@My_Family_Stories Hi, You're so welcome. I have Stage 3 Kidney Disease & have been Stage 4. I am due for my test to see if they have improved further. I watched my Mum go through Dialysis from 1996 through to 2000. Unfortunately I didn't know about healing Kidneys back then and didn't have a computer to Google with. Sadly my Mother passed in 2000 at age 59. I am in my late 50's now and have been aware of the kidney disease for many years. Back then I didn't think that there was any hope of avoiding Dialysis so I was ignorant where checking on my kidneys with blood tests was concerned. The Nephrologists weren't giving me any hope as well. It was all grim. Thank God I know more these days through searching for answers.

He certainly needs to keep his blood pressure and blood sugar under control - and the best advice is to work with a renal dietitian. Our diet plays a major role in our health and in how quickly we loose kidney function. Reach out to local social workers to see what they can do to help him with his alcoholism. He has to want to improve and will have to make diet and lifestyle changes if he wants to not end up in an even worse situation. Do what you can to encourage him and support him along this challenging change.

I have a question James or anyone here. Right now i have 1cm kidney stone in my left kidney. The doctor advised me to take Potassium Citrate (1,080 mg) to treat it. What about that?
@DADVICETV
@DADVICETV 4 жыл бұрын
I am going to assume the stone is small enough that the doctors thinks this will help you pass it. The good news is that Potassium Citrate is very effective and reducing the size of some types of stones. About 40% of the tablet you take will be potassium - so just account for that in your daily max potassium. Depending on how your labs are, you may have a 1500mg daily max of potassium (that would be VERY restricted) and this would account for about 1/4 of your daily max (1080mg Potassium Citrate has about 400mg of Potassium). Most people with CKD stage 4 or better have much higher daily potassium limit. This should be pretty easy to fit into your day without any issues. They never tell you in school how important math is if your kidneys have problems.

Dialysis seems a whole lot easier and more enjoyable than your diet recommendations. Sorry, but there's no way I'm spending half my day washing and rinsing 1 cup of vegetables. A 3 ounce steak for dinner ? Really ? I'd hang myself before I would choose this kind of life style.

I strongly recommend volunteering for a week at a local Dialysis center - that will give you an excellent opportunity to see what life with dialysis is like if you choose that route. I've been working on a video interviewing dialysis patients, and every single one would go back and make the simple diet and lifestyle changes needed to avoid dialysis if they could. However, for each of us, our quality of life and the diet we eat is within our control, and you are free to pick the path you feel is best for you. I changed my life overnight and it was so much easier than it seems for those currently not on a healthy diet and a healthy lifestyle. For me, dialysis just wasn't the life I wanted. I travel for pleasure and business all the time, enjoy sleeping in, love using a hot tub and getting massages - all things which become logistical challenges or more difficult with dialysis. It is also essential to remember that dialysis isn't treatment; it is the last resort to keep you alive until you can get a transplant. Good luck - I wish you the best with your fight against chronic kidney disease no matter which path you choose.

It can be hard to tell. But the kidneys are down low and towards the side. I still have back pain from a car accident and it masked my kidneys hurting until they stopped hurting. For me it felt like a tightness and like there was a tennis ball or golf ball under my skin. There was no bump- the pain just felt like there was something under my skin pushing outwards next to my spine. I used stretches and bending to manage my back pain and one morning my kidneys just stopped hurting. It was very noticeable when they no longer hurt - I never realized just how uncomfortable and bothersome it was until the pain was gone.
