Love the Empress Wu...glad to see it featured in this video. I wish I could be active in the garden like this....chronic arthritis has me in too much pain to enjoy planting and I miss it! It’s wonderful to watch you Laura and absorb you lovely gardens.

In years past my garden was quite shady, due to very large oak trees on the property. Over the years we’ve lost them one by one...now we have a much sunnier yard, both in front and back, and I’ve had to adapt to these major changes. Either sun or shade has it’s rewards and challenges, and keeps this gardener engaged!

I planted 3 empress wu hosta a few hears ago. They came in very small 3.5 " pots so it's going to take a few more years still before they mature to full size plants. Your plants already look really large so you will have a great display in no time. Love the plants you put in today, nothing really showy- like flowers, but great combination of color, texture, and form.

Because of you I have fallen in love with heucheras! Planted one in a fall pot with other pretties and here in Alabama it's still going strong! The flower stalks started blooming a couple of weeks ago. This pot looks so pretty with the creeping jennie Today I'm off to purchase some new fillers. 🌿🌸💚

I love the beautiful combination of shade plants that you chose for this area. Please remember to give us a tour so we can see how they look during the 100° plus temps of summer. I also live in growing zone 5 however, we get higher humidity during the summer here in the Midwest. I LOVE both of your KZbin channels and look forward to each and every new video! Can't wait to see Benjamin, Aaron and of course your 'Garden Supervisor' Russell in up-coming videos!

Astilbe, hosta, ferns (especially Japanese painted ferns), and rhododendron look amazing together in part shade to nearly full shade., though rhodies don’t like full shade... I have a ton of shade in my yard and pretty much anything that you would find in a Japanese garden works.

It will be beautiful. That's a lot of "Empress Wu". There is a Hosta called "Cathedral Windows" that would look great in there. "Sum and Substance," considered a giant Hosta might could pull off the extra sun in the back. "Aphrodite" can also handle a little more sun and has great flowers. It's big but not giant.

I have Sun & Substance hostas which I love. Another favourite which blooms early is lungwort. I love its spotted leaves. Thanks for this awesome video. The lessons on how to layer are so important. I made the mistake of buying a plant that I love and then would find a sun or shade spot and plunk it in, instead of focussing on layering and the colour/texture/evergreen elements of plants. So I have a lot of moving of plants to do.

This year, I'm trying hazelnut shells to deter them, we'll see! Great video as always! Edited to add: I want to say I love the fast motion videos too, I wish I could have things go fast like that in real life!

Try copper scrubbier around the base of the host as. It cuts up their slimmy bodies. Open the copper up from the center to retain the circle. If you’re hosta is large, tie 2 together. It works, I put them around mine as they came up and they look wonderful!

@@JJ-gt2po I have done that too! I actually have them, you can even get them at the dollar store. But with Hostas, I need protection as soon as they break ground, so thought I would try hazelnut shells because my daughter bought me a bag. Hope they work!

I love hostas. Those are some monstrous plant starts. I usually have to buy the smaller ones and just wait for them to get that big which can take years. Empress Wu is a very large variety. Those will fill in nicely! I want to get some Hakonechloa this year.

Also, in case anyone wants to know. I have hostas growing on a side of my house where there is no sprinkler or drip water whatsoever and they do just fine with only rain water and the occasional water I put on them. I live in a very dry climate (Colorado). They don't need that much water. Even the ones that are on drip system only get watered once every three days for 10 minutes.

Hi Laura,I enjoy your channel tremendously, since 2016. You've answered every question that I have ever had pertaining to gardening in the course of the years that I've been watching your channel and because of your genuine authenticity and sincere of everything flowers and gardening, I now have a great love for container gardening. I have a question for you though. I have termites in my flower gardens. I had the problem last year so I didn't plant in flowers in ground. I t seems that I have the problem again this year. I don't wish to use chemicals in my garden to kill them. Can you suggest some things that I can do to combat this problem?

She needed to make room for the smaller Heuchera plants that she added in front of the extremely large 4' tall x 6' wide Empress Wu' hostas... for a nice layered effect, otherwise the pretty Heuchera plants would not be visible. That empty area in back where she replanted those large hostas was supposed to be for a dog run for Molly (the German Sheppard puppy) which they recently re-homed with their nephew.
