When I was a kid we only had 1950s planters with no electronics and common practice was lift the planter at the end of the row and make sure not plugs or empty bin by seeing seed and fertilizer dropped on the headlands. That way you knew there was at most one pass with a problem. We borrowed a friends planter with sensors once and the sensors never worked right. More time fussing with the electronics than planting corn.

The markers do just that make a mark yo go by on the next pass. You can set them to suit you and your equipment . Every farmer has his own way to raise their crops.

Glad I'm not the only one that buckets fertilizer into the planter. We're not big scale/high tech, but still get the job done with older machinery. We typically plant 105 day corn, but went with a 99 day variety that has good yield records and fast drydown for shelling.

The old 2 row, you followed the rear tire track, one tire in the track you just made! To see if it was working, when you picked up the planter you always look to see if corn was coming out!

Wow, that corn ground looks sandy. That Deere planter looks to be in good shape. I’ve had good luck with dielectric grease on sensors on my older equipment to keep them working. I like the idea of a wheel on the marker path. I struggle with centering the hood on the marker with my two row.

This video couldn't have come at a better time. I have been in a hospital for 4 days, the third time this year and so far have been diagnosed with a double hernia, a blood clot in my neck, and cancer, among other things. All I can think about is not to leave my 14 year old daughter with no one since I am a single parent. You channel has been a great distraction for me and I appreciate the effort that your family puts into the videos. So thank you so much for easing my my mind just a little. I hope I get the chance to comment in the future. God bless.

I have to assume there's some benefit to a longer maturation corn? Do you get bigger kernels if it takes longer to grow? Or higher...starch content? I always thought the steer tire in the marker arm trough made the most sense. Trying to keep it lined up on the center of the hood seems like you'd be white knuckling the wheel bouncing back and forth and eyeballing it from the height of the hood. Is that crazy long cotter(?) pin in the shaft end on the planter meant to do something? I can imagine some sort of paddle on a counter could be used there to determine total revolutions and calculate acres. Or maybe it was the only thing you had on hand when the old hitch pin sheared, which is the less interesting option. Prayin' for a bit more rain!
@trinitydairy7 ай бұрын
I think the longer maturity corn gets a bigger ear. The long pin is so I can see the shaft turning from the tractor.

My late Dad had basically this exact same planter. (one wonders if it IS his old planter, haha. We were several counties from you though). He used 36" rows. 4 row. Also used a '69 IH 544 tractor that looked similar to what you are using. He retired and machinery was sold in '98. I see the tubes and spreaders for the herbicide and insecticide are missing from yours. Does anyone use that pre-emergence granular "row bander" herbicide anymore? I remember Dad using "Amiben" on beans especially to control the pigeon grass before beans were large enough to cultivate. This was in the days before roundup crops. The monitor for those is pretty basic. Just some optical sensors to see the seed dropping (dust buildup a issue, dad had a bottle brush on a long handle to clean them) and primitive (compared to now) electronics that only would sound a warning if the seed drop rate changed.
@trinitydairy7 ай бұрын
We've never used the herbicide boxes.

Hiya Allan, nice video, enjoyed the planting. How many pounds of seed per acres and if you don't mind what's the price of a 50# bag?
@trinitydairy7 ай бұрын
The seed corn is sold by the bag, but not the weight, each bag is 80,000 kernels, and I am planting about 23,000 kernels per acre, and a bag of the corn I planted costs about 190 dollars a bag.
@alfredomarotta66047 ай бұрын
@@trinitydairy Thanks Allan, if I'm doing the math right....about $1200.00, for 20 acres yaeeks not cheap.

Graphite powder to lubricate the inside parts of the planter.

A stupid question Why are The corn blue and sometimes red as yours?
@trinitydairy7 ай бұрын
It's a seed treatment, that protects the seed from insects. Depending on the brand of seed, it might be different colors.
