I’m so excited about your experiment Calvin. I planned and prepared for doing the same and discovered there wasn’t enough sun in the area I chose. Now I can watch the results of your experiment and plan better for next year. About the rest of your garden, I did notice where I mulched heavily in the garden beds last fall the weeds that did come up, pulled out easily. Thanks for sharing. Thanks very much for watching. I have noticed that the weeds do pull up better also. The spot where I put the corn gets a lot of sun. Where I had my corn last year was partly shaded and it didn't do as good as I would have liked it to. Have a fantastic week, Calvin and Marie

I like it Calvin ! Good idea leaving a mower width for the Cub Cadet to pass between the corn patch and garden . We have similar clay base ground and also used Pioneer seed . Don't worry if a few plants don't make it , just re - plant another seed and it will come on a few weeks later . If memory serves me correct this is " 82 day " sweet corn . We still got some time yet . Keep up the good work Calvin and Marie !

Red clay is like concrete. I lived in Cobb County, GA as a child and can’t think of red clay without thinking of Cobb Co. With those warm temperatures the corn should do very well. Can’t wait to see the garden grow in the coming months.

That clay sure is hard when it's dry. I can only weed the garden after it has rained or after I water it to soften up the clay so it releases the roots. Everything looks great. Hope yall get a lot of produce from it. The glads are so beautiful. Yall take care.

Yes the red clay is terrible. That particular area is even worse than the rest because it used to be a bank there and I had it bulldozed down and about three foot was removed in that area. Thanks, we love the Gladiolus also. Calvin and Marie

I know this was from two years back the planting idea looks good. Spacing looks terrible, unless he plans to hand pollinate the corn silk. If you do this I suggest a 10x10 block to be used. Use the spacing you choose.

No that feeling. This is very interesting. Heck, hope it works Calvin. If it does, why do it any other way?

I tried it twice and my soil is just to much clay for the roots to grow without tilling first.

I may try this (using a small shovel to drill) with the remainder of my maize seeds that I've had pregerming in my house. As my weed whacker does not have a string, I will have to attack the grass with a mixture of a reel mower (if I can get one, and if I can get it where I want to put it), a scythe, and a scuffle hoe. The soil I have is some weird technic thing. It rakes like sugar on top, suggesting sand, but beneath which, I believe it to be some kind of clay.

Our clay was so hard that the corn grew but it didn't produce as much as tilling the soil first did.
