I live in the Sacramento CA area where we get long hot summers. I have an olhy in a wine barrel. Two big factors to successfully growing these are 1) get them out of direct sunlight for any time of day. Leaves will scorch and fall way early if you don’t 2) you have to water them every day, whether it’s in the container or in the soil. If your soil gets swampy, cut back to every 2 or 3 days. The symptoms for too little water or too much water are the same. In either case, the leaves will fall. These love water. If your soil is that horrendous clay soil like we have here, you will need to add the amendments that she showed. My fall color is from orange to fire engine red. Real beauties.

As a nursery owner, I really appreciate your comment about plants in pots. Most don't like pots, especially black ones where the sun can bake roots. We try to keep them as happy as possible, but its always good to let customers know that plants will be much prettier in the ground in no time. Love Oakleaf Hydrangeas too! Thanks for the video! As always you present very well, and I enjoy watching your videos and look for ward to new ones every day. Thanks!

You are a great gardener. It is great to see someone give tips that work. My yard has rubble, rocks and clay...basically devil soil. The secret to my nice garden is partially learning about plants...root structure etc...and adding organic matter and microorganisms. Especially for many natives. They need a microherd to do well. I'm glad to see the tone fertilizers have included the microorganisms in their product. The only way I could get them previously, was to special order it.

I just got a landscape designer to make a master plan for our neglected yard with lots of trees but not much else in terms of landscaping. We bought our first 5 plants from the plan yesterday and began installing them. Your videos have given me the courage to undertake this task. I live in the Southeaster US Zone 8b. Yesterday, I planted a tea olive and today I will be installing 3 dwarf gardenias and an oak leaf hydrangea. I am so excited to see that you have a video on the exact plant I bought! This is the one I'm most nervous about caring for :) Thanks for all of the help and inspiration.

Greetings from San Antonio, Texas! I LOVE watching your videos. I have sat (for weeks) watching current and past videos. I could bankrupt us if I planted all what I want in my small front and back gardens. At what point do you think you could stop planting...I know annuals are every year, but what percentage of all you have goes towards annuals vs the perennials? I am known by friends as having a green thumb but in comparison to your abundant glory, I have to say I have a lot to learn...keep the videos coming! And congratulations on your beautiful son! Enjoy them while they are young...mine are 24 and 22, so I really miss those kisses and hugs from them as toddlers and babies! I really love watching your videos. If I could ever swing a trip up to where you are, do you give tours of your property?

Capt Murf They are! but I agree they are gorgeous. I got some from burpee years ago and they have been champs. The only downside is that I think they are sterile, so maybe not as good for pollinators. The Gatsby series also has a "double" flowered oakleaf that may be similar to snowflake. Have you seen that one?

I planted 6 of the Gatsby series last summer, - 2 each of gal, star, and moon. However, i planted them as small, ordered online, plants and unfortunately, put them in the shade where i had a bed fenced off from the deer. They havent done well at all - i think because they need more sun. I dont have another fenced bed to move them to where they will get more sun. Very disappointing as i had been drooling over them for a year or so before i ordered them from home depot. I havent seen them in local nurseries yet.

I’m very interested in following the progress of these hydrengeas. I have a challenging spot with the same soil conditions you described (dry, compacted hard clay) where I’ve been undecided about planting some hydrengeas. If yours survive I’ll probably go for it.

zully lozano Oakleaf hydrangeas also need care and like moist fertile soil. I have three in my garden (snowflake, snow queen and ruby slippers). I'd recommend improving and enriching the soil like the poster did. Using the fertilizer she used with "bio tone" may also help, by adding micronutrients to the soil.

Good advice! I have some standard size hydrangea quercifolia planted two years ago and I keep pruning them at the wrong time. This means I don't get the flowers. Yes, I did it again this year. It's winter where I live (Melbourne, Australia) and there are no buds as I pruned too late in late summer for any new growth. Why prune? Because the plants keep intruding on the shrubs next to them such as a viburnum awabki. So either the hydrangea will have to be moved or the viburnum. By the way, these hydrangea are susceptible to wind damage so try to keep them sheltered from the wind somehow. Every few days I find more bent or broken leaf stems.

Aww the hydrangeas may be suffering if you are on zone 10. This one should be OK in zone 9...but oakleaf are not drought tolerant (in my experience) and may need: shade in the afternoon b: extra water weekly and when it is hot and dry, especially for the first year or two. Same for hydrangea macrophylla.
