I’m from southern Indiana and my favorite variety is “earliserve” bush beans. They have a maturity of around 45 days. They don’t produce too much foliage so I can easily lay the top leaves over and all the beans are right there to pick. Easy! No searching. Heavy producers at first but wear off after 3rd picking or so

I planted a row of rattlesnake pole beans, one of Kentucky wonder pole and one of blue lake pole. Rattlesnake has outperformed the other two by leaps and bounds. The blue lake and Kentucky wonder grew massive plants. I put them on raised cattle panels (starting a bit over a foot above the ground). The rows connected and made a BIG ball at the top. My favorite bush bean is Provider, but I only use them to fill in holes in the garden.

we don't do pole beans (if we do they are the dry bean varieties like Pinto, Navy, trail of tears, arikara, etc) my favorite bush bean is Jade. Jade is a stringless heirloom variety. We have had great tasting beans when canning using Jade. There is a newer one out that is a hybrid I believe called Jade II. I did not notice much difference between the two but I do prefer heirloom when at all possible as I try to save seeds each year. We also do the Royal Burgundy beans and Top Notch yellow wax beans.

Our favorite bush beans are Royal Burgundy, Carson, and Jade. We freeze all of them. The bonus with Royal Burgundy is that if you make cold-packed dilly beans, the brine will turn pinkish purple as you are processing them. The jars look really cool. Carson has been difficult to get for several years because of seed crop failures. But they are the most productive bean variety that we have ever found.

Hey, Travis! I've gotten pretty good at reusing drip tape, if only to keep the weed pressure down. It's been dry here, and if it was't for my drip tape system, I wouldn't have much of a garden. As it is, I've got a LOT goin' on. I'm concentrating on tomatoes and peppers this year, but I did plant a row of Contender and a row of Jade. I usually plant Blue Lake bush beans, but I'm trying these others to see how they do. My favorite pole bean? Rattlesnake here, by far. They are very heat tolerant, and it's already consistently in the mid to low 80's here. If they're not in the ground here by early to mid-April, they just won't make - Just too hot in late May through September!

For planting three sisters, do we need to stagger planting times for the corn, beans, and squash varieties? How early can we start planting them? I live 37N latitude in Tennessee.

Not sure. Maybe someone else on here could speak from experience on that. We've never done the three sisters planting.

Question for Travis or Greg. I have a raised bed that is 4×12 and would like to get as much planted as I can in this bed. I'm wondering if I could plant the middle section with okra and the outer sides with squash. If okra is not a good companion planting with squash then could I perhaps plant bush beans instead?

Okra in the middle and squash on the ends sounds good.

Just got my squash and zucchini planted yesterday. Plan on planting my pole beans in this weekend. When will you plant your peas? My peas always get way too hot in June/July and never produce well. I’m in zone 8 Georgia also.

We don't grow field peas anymore. We have a pest called pea curculio that stings them and makes them inedible, regardless what we spray. Wish we could still grow them, but just can't anymore.

Question about drip tape. My water system has plenty of flow, but the pressure is low. I don't have enough pressure to run two wally world sprinkler heads at the same time. How will this effect drip tape. Thanks.
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 4 жыл бұрын
You need at least 12 psi to run our drip system.

I only plant pole beans. We have copperhead snakes here and having to pick something that low to the ground makes me nervous. Also, you say that you just roll up the trellis at the end of the season. How do you get all the dead vines out? I use concrete mesh wire and just throw them on a burn pile.

Last year I planted Kentucky blue pole beans I bought from Burpee. These are the best variety of beans I've ever had. They grow nice long slender beans and produced clear up to the end of September. I used to swear by the regular blue lake beans but they got so they produced flat pods and very poor quality. I live in Oregon.

For my drip system I have 12 rows at 100 feet length each. Does a 3/4 inch garden hose deliver a higher water pressure to the system rather than a 5/8 inch garden hose?
@gardeningwithhoss

It may deliver more flow, but probably not more pressure.

Drip tape was designed to be buried. Commercial farmers have been burying it for decades. We get confused when we see people putting it on top of the soil.

Are your pole beans up good? I planted some Co-op pole beans March 30 by hand and they ain't up enough to see a row. If I only need a 1/4# of seed, is there any way to get that amount from your pole snap bean and pole limassol selection?
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 4 жыл бұрын
Our pole beans are up good -- starting to climb the trellis now. We only have packets (150 seeds) and 1 lb options. If you don't use all the seed, you can put it in the fridge and plant more in the fall.
