Yes!!! "I am too nosey and need to know what my worms are doing"...that is me too!!! I have definitely seen the "no fluff" passion in my comments!! So glad to see you explain fluffing here!! Great close up of the blue worm!! Worm ball, after worm ball, after worm ball!!! Great job Blue!! There's that pumpkin again...but I am watching out of order!!!! YESSSSS!!! You have an Executive Producer as well!!! Aren't they great helping us out!! Why of all videos did I miss this one for so long??!? Super awesome favorite video of all time finding out that you have an Executive Producer!!😂🪱🪱🪱

I always get excited when I see the big fella in action. You gotta fluff, the worms need to know that you care about them and you need to be able to see how they are doing. Makes perfect sense about the build up of gas and the need to release it. Boohoo to all those non-fluffers.

your blue bin definitely has more worms than our big blue bin. Amazing to see how much material (food) worms can convert into that rich fertilizer. Spring fever is over hear as well :) ps. I agree the worms will eat all sorts of food, I've fed orange peal, grapefruit, onion, garlic stems..... all are eaten - eventually.

It has so many worms I steal from blue for my projects. On the other side I also will dump finished projects on top of blue to dry out and harvest. Thank you for watching.

Great update. I like the way you explain everything rather than just going through the motions. Those are some very happy and well-fed worms. Thanks for pointing out a deep blue Indian blue 👍

I always get excited when i find them. I don't know if that is when they hit breed age or if it is something different. Ill keep reading the books. From what I have read the blue worms are a mystery to the scholars too.

Hi Anne, the castings look great. My worms are in the middle of the migration process but there is nothing like a worm to teach you patience which they forcing me to have unwillingly 🤨 That was great information about the stick.

Fluffing makes sense. My bins at the bottom get quite dense. I'm sure they appreciate fluffy compost to slither through as opposed to "cement" . Thanks for sharing : )

Gases are the reason I am not a big fan of covering worms tightly with plastic. Yes, I am using bubble wrap, but it is sitting loosely on top and I take it off for a couple of minutes every day.

You have good instincts, I had not given it much thought as to the effect on the worms before reading about it.

Hiya Ann... Great information about fluffing which I luv to do and about the sticks too. I didn't hv any particular reason for adding some sticks in my bin....cos that was an experiment. But great to hear about the sticks too. Love yr videos.

Very informative video! Some things I thought while watching you're video. If you could find a similar bin but in a circle, that could save you the work of having to scoot it back every so often. I personally don't like to stress my worms out if I don't have to. Also Sifting with a 1/2 or 3/4 in. screen before the screening with 1/4 in. would save more time. For example doing all the castings you want to process with 1/2 in. and then doing all those screened in one batch.

I've read that citrus should not go in a worm bin because limonene is poisonous to worms. Do they eat the orange peels or do you have other things in the bins that take care of that like wood lice or mites?
@PlantObsessed
@PlantObsessed 2 жыл бұрын
Yes that is likely that the helper bugs make the do help degrade the citrus so it is safe. I add citrus to my oldest bins that had abundant microbes and bugs to help.

The off gassing of composting substances cost me about 10% of my worms in one tote a couple months ago. I smelled ammonia one day, then the next day I found dead worms 😟
@PlantObsessed
@PlantObsessed 2 жыл бұрын
That is terrible. Was it a particular type of food that caused it do you think?
@NanasWorms
@NanasWorms 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it was wet dog hair. I put dry dog hair in my kitchen Cinderella bin in floor sweepings all the time. But I put a much larger quantity in another tote and wet it because I felt it was too dry. Dog hair has unique bacteria that off gas into a toxic gas to worms. We all know that distinctive wet dog smell! I videotaped the whole sad experience and will eventually put it up. I still have older videos to upload first.

I don’t use tight coverings like you. I found my bins stayed too damp. I keep them completely uncovered now and my issue resolved itself. The top gets dry but literally right below that it’s the perfect moisture. It’s almost like that dry top works as my covering. I’ll use a little square of bubble wrap just over the feeding spot to reduce the smell escaping to help with gnats. Do you still put Molasses in your bedding?
@PlantObsessed

I use molasses in the bedding or kelp meal depending on what i have available.

I have Asian Jumping worms that have invaded the property and am loosing perennial plants to them any suggestions on how to eradicate these vermin from my property would be greatly appreciated not to concern about beneficials as the worms need to go first. I mean they even ate a 4'x5' plot of caraway thyme in less than a season
@PlantObsessed
@PlantObsessed 2 жыл бұрын
I don't know much about them. Normally worms eat dead stuff. If I wanted to catch worms I would put some favorite food like melon and collect them and dispose of them.
