@@PlantObsessed yeah I have a sawzall to cut it with I'm just not sure exactly how I'm going to put the pieces together nor do I know where I'm going to keep it. It may be an outside bin. Haven't figured out the logistics yet but I got the blue rain barrel so the hardest part is done I think LOL

Love watching the progression from one end of Blue to the other. We have been focused on worm production more so than looking for castings, but I think I may have to do something like this on the side. :-) It is amazing what such small worms can and do consume in such a short amount of time. Thanks for another great video, Anne.

The *_horizontal continuous-flow wedge_* configuration works really good on this scale. My miniature wedge setup is interesting, but way too small to have incremental extraction of dried off vermicompost. The title of this video is making me seriously consider putting a saw to the blue drum I have - and _no, these are not the droids we are looking for_ :)

I only have “regular-sized” bins (about 12 + 1 UWB) but I sift all bins the same way you sift Blue. I sift from all areas that are not the feeding zone (usually a corner or a thin strip of area).

I think some of the Dark Grape ones may be Rubellus not Blues I have suspected that when you add leaves maybe you had hitchhikers. Rubellus are fast like a Blue but thicker. Who knows though.

Question, why do you sift off just the top layer rather than fluffing first and then sifting? Wouldn't you get more castings that way?
@PlantObsessed2 жыл бұрын
The very top is the driest. It sifts the best. Down a little deeper has a bit higher moisture and tends to ball up in the screen.
@Tippler06112 жыл бұрын
Love love love blue. Question about mites in your harvested castings though... My horizontal flow bin is much smaller and the finished end has tons of mites. Does that happen to you and if so is it a concern? Especially for houseplants I worry the mites won't have predators and will run amok 😬
@PlantObsessed2 жыл бұрын
I don't see many mites when it is dry. There are thousands of kinds of mites. The ones we usually have in a worm bin are not the same as plant pest.

Is there salt in the bread and is this bad for the worms? Interesting system to work with. Sad I don't have the space to make that system in my place. Greetings from Belgium.
@PlantObsessed Жыл бұрын
There is not enough salt to be a problem. There is salt naturally occurring in soil. I rinse most food that has salt added and have not had a problem. Bread just needs to be wet so they can eat it.

Good morning, Ann, from Windermere, Florida zone 9b USA 🇺🇸 I love watching your sifting and fluff method. I just made a video my 2 tiny shoeboxes and 1 was sticky. I used packing peanuts and I think that was the corn/wheat base. Just guessing. Do you ever add packing peanuts that break down? 600lb. 👌 Wow 👌 I was thrilled with 17lb after 40 days from my Can-O-Worms. Blue rocks👍🪱👍
@PlantObsessed2 жыл бұрын
I have not added any packing peanuts. Most of the stuff I buy has those air bags. I bet the corn starch they make them with would need something to help like coco coir or peat to keep it from being sticky.
