I grow & sell succulents and I completely agree with everything you said. Some of them are definitely high maintenance and require very specific growing conditions. I've had to help so many people with dying succulents because they had them inside without any supplemental light or airflow. I'm not sure where people got the idea that succulents are easy "house/indoor" plants but I hate when I see them marketed that way because it's setting people up for failure.

Remember getting a little ivy plant as a kid, and killing it in a couple of weeks. I had it in the middle of my room 😅 So now I got some cuttings from my mom's plant, and placed them under my grow light this time. They seem to grow without problem in high light. Gets a new leaf every 5 days or so.

I have 2 maidenhair ferns and they are pretty easy. I have 1 in a cheap self watering pot I bought off of amazon and the other is in a ceramic pot I bought from lowes. They love bright light because my sunroom is south facing, humidity doesn’t seem to matter because this winter the humidity got pretty low in the sunroom and they are still growing. It got down to the 40’s out there and they didn’t care so temperature doesn’t matter either. The one in the ceramic pot started looking bad last year so I chopped it down and it grew back. I don’t water everyday, maybe once a week but their soil is pretty loamy and not airy like my other plants. You should try again, once you figure it out you will really enjoy them.

I also struggle with ivy but I still try to do better. I have one that I grew from cuttings that I got at an alleyway. They do well when propagating in water but then idk what happens that they don’t thrive in soil mix I have for them like it’s well draining and and will retain some moisture. Supposedly they like to be dry but since they are native to England I assume they high humidity. I luckily haven’t gotten spider mites but I have gotten fungus gnats XD. Croton, check . maidenhair fern, check . Plerandra elegantissima, check . ivy, check. Ivy doesn't do well indoors and in my opinion it shouldn't even be sold as an indoor plant. But if you like ivy check out Senecio macroglossus. They look a lot like ivy but are really easy to care for if you give them enough light and let the soil dry out between waterings.

"Ivys thrive in England where it's cold"....nooooo. England is very moderate temperatures, not "cold", but it's ALWAYS humid there. So I'm guessing the difference is moisture/humidity. Also why my ivy in New England is doing fine and not getting spider mites. 🤞🏻🤞🏻 Crotons I've always heard were outdoor plants, require highlight so not good candidates for indoors. I don't do most succulents but I do have a jade and string of pearls which are thriving but I won't get more because it's just too much to ask in my northern latitude. I think my dracena is the funkiest guy ever and I love their windy trunks. Super easy too, love them. Did a polka dot plant and feel the same as you. Guy just got gross on me. Ferns are WAY too demanding for me to bother with. NEVER AGAIN. Same reason I won't ever bother with begonias or calatheas, not interested in a fussy houseplant. I used to hate sansiveria but I'm starting to like them. They seem to be everywhere in doctors offices and stuff which can get boring and dusty but that's not their fault, I've decided. My spider plant for some reason just doesn't look great and I don't get it. Supposed to be "easy plants" but mine is just sad looking. Considering giving it away because life is to short to stress over a plant.

Echeverias are tricky business... I love them and I am a recently realized plant junky BUT every part of their care at home is tricky. By home I mean flats not like those beautiful houses with backyards and wonderful terraces. They seem to thrive only in the right climate, only if cared for outside and only if you protect them of the extreme of conditions... so much effort for a beginner plant if you ask me... still I try to grow a couple in my teeny tiny balcony ‘cause I adore them but I don’t expect them to thrive for me. The problem with succulents is that I forget they exist...and then at some point they just crisp up or rot because I overcompensate with watering after forgetting about them for almost a year. They aren't good for a chronic underwaterer like me. I need structure and some kind of schedule to remind myself to regularly check my plants. My purple velvet plant is doing okay ( *knock-on-wood*) but it is incredibly thirsty. It wouldn't mind to ve watered every second day.... I think it'd do really good in passive hydro?

Now every time I see a croton or ivy I say NOPE and I shudder. I’ve gone so far as to not buy plants that are near them in the store/greenhouse bc I don’t ever want to go thru the spider mites they each brought me. However I deeply disagree with your take on anthuriums. I’ve been looking for a large one for a while now and they are too expensive atm, but I think they are worthwhile plants. They are resilient and will teach you a lot about how to care for plants bc they respond well to improvements, and withstand a lot of clumsiness. Being easy to find or “common” should never be a detractor, I don’t get this weird snobbery amongst plant enthusiasts these days. Not saying that’s you- I fully agree that if you don’t love a plant it’s just not one for you to buy, but alas. Also, I hate bromeliads! I think they are lame lookin’ 😇

@@TatesPlants haha maybe 😂 the one next to my desk even survived the first lockdown last March. no one was working in the office for a few weeks, so when I came back it was all droopy and/or crispy and had already lost a lot of its lower leaves. I gave it a bunch of water and it perked right back up. I honestly don‘t know much about Krotons as they are not my favourite, but I would never have guessed them to be difficult plants 😅

I watched you the other day and enjoyed your vid, so logged in now just to subscribe and like. You have a good screen presence and voice and I could see you cast as 'Anne of Green Gables' (she loves nature too). Now that oddness is said, I have killed most of those plants as a newb - almost in the same order. Croton (died when repotted), Flamingo Anthurium (couldn't get watering right), polka dot (finicky), fern English Ive (senecio macroglossus looks almost the same, but way easier) etc. I have never bought any of them again and am really good with plants now, but some.... Don't buy a waffle plant! A lot depends on where you live too I reckon.
