ABOUT THIS VIDEO: GET RID OF THRIPS (and make sure they never come back)
This is an updated video on my experience with thrips on houseplants (in my case, thrips on monstera) and what I have done to really get rid of thrips. We first go over the question of how to identify thrips on plants and specifically how to identify thrips on houseplants. When identifying thrips the first thing I would recommend is to identify thrips damage on houseplants (I go over the most common examples in the video), after we have identified thrips damage on plants, we can move foward to looking for thrips themselves on the plant. To get rid of thrips I also argue that it is very important to understand the thrips life cycle, thrips life cycle stages and thrips life cycle days. Understanding the thrips life cycle will help us when getting rid of thrips and to know exactly where to focus our efforts against them and for thrips control after :-). This video is perfect to get rid of thrips on monstera but of course these methods will also be great on other plants. So if you are looking for videos answering the question how to get rid of thrips on plants, this video is especially made for you. If you are looking for thrips control organic, I would recommend that you look into nematodes against thrips (and do let me know how that experience goes for you).

Thank you Lucia for making this. I generally do a monthly ‘pamper’ session for my plants, shower/SB plant Invigorator/neem, peppermint soap,peppermint oil spray but I got lazy and skipped a few months, on Tuesday as I was moving one of my Hoyas I noticed an adult thrips, just the one but we all know it just takes one 😳 I checked everything for the babies and more adults but couldn’t see anything but I’m not taking any chances. I’ve ordered the systemics by celeflor and they should arrive next week. In the meantime I’ve started going through all my plants (halfway through now) showering, using Provanto, SBPI followed by my neem/peppermint spray. I will get back to monthly maintenance (no more laziness) but am hoping the systemics will provide a safety buffer for me. I guess the thrips that I found got in through the window 😡 am so annoyed with myself.

I’m in Canada (and just began my thrips battle) and found a product called “End All” by Safers! It’s an insecticide spray that seems to target all stages of life. It needs to be sprayed weekly, but perhaps see if you can find it! I found it at Canadian Tire
@stannetaprospere4301
@stannetaprospere4301 7 ай бұрын
@@shiftyy2786 tried it. End all is just another oil and soap mixture. It will kill the adults that gets hit by the spray but not the eggs or the larvae. It won't prevent them from mating. So in 2 weeks they will be back. So you'll be on a weekly spray cycle for years because you can never get everyone and they will mate lay eggs (which insecticidal soap does kill) the larvae will become adults and you'll end up spending a whole bunch of money and losing your mind.

Neem oil soil drench w/ correct measurements will do the same as these spikes (soak up into the membrane and tissues of the plant when the insects feed it will kill them) Incase you don't want to use the spikes or you can't find them. Good video! Most videos on thrips take someone 10 minutes to get to the point of what they are what they do what their life cycle is and how to get rid of them.

Try thrips eating predatory mites before you resort to any pesticides! They eat all the thrips, I think those for thrips are called cucumeris, and then orius bugs can be a good complement. Super effective (just make sure not to use soaps or pesticides while using biological pest control because they would obviously also die)

The solution ratios were not good for my plants, some got burned due to the neem oil even not exposed to the sun. 1.5 cups of water is too little so I would recommend 1tbsp (3-5ml) neem oil, 9ml soap, 3 drops of alcohol and 1L of water. I have been using these ratios and saw no more burns. Avoid sunlight after neem oil like the plague unless you clean the leaves off with only soap and water which also kills thrips on contact and didn't burn leaves :)

For US residents - the insecticide she's showing in the video is an Acetamiprid based insecticide that cannot be found here in the US (that I've seen). According to a wiki article, Acetamiprid is a nicotine-like substance. In fact, nicotine itself is a water soluable insecticide and can easily be made by making "tobacco tea". Do NOT use this on fruiting plants, obviously. Unless you want to eat nicotine. Also, don't use this outdoors. It's very toxic to all insects including beneficial ones.

You can use predatory nematodes. As with most biological control, it can take a number of weeks/applications before you see effect, but it is definitely better long term for people who do not want to use pesticides. Nematodes will need some amount of moisture in order to have multiple life cycles in the soil/on the plant to get the most for your money. You also have to continue spraying once a week until you no longer see any thrips (use sticky traps near the infested plants and change them out every time you spray to monitor population!). Even then, I would still consider spraying every other week. Plus, they’re microscopic, and without the moisture, they will die so you won’t see them roaming around your house. They are not parasitic or toxic to humans, so it is safe to use on your basil. Soapy water and oils can be a bit riskier as tender leaves tend to show signs of phytotoxicity (which is both aesthetically displeasing and damaging to the plant). It might also not taste great if you are planning to eat the basil leaves.

If they don't look like little flies with wings, they could be collemboles! They like to live in moist soil, so if possible slighy less watering, and saucers with airflow ridges help. But they don't really do much harm to mature plants. They can eat roots of tiny seedlings sometimes

Just figured out what I had today. Tbh, I noticed them crawling around on my leaves a couple of months ago, but brushed it off because I was hoping it was just some odd pest that would die off, and I was moving to a new house in freezing arctic temperatures (in the negatives) so my primary concern was getting the plants over without them freezing to death... Now my plants are looking ill and there are thrips EVERYWHERE. Definitely should've acted immediately. 😢

A few weeks ago I noticed that my adansonii wasn't growing and developing many yellow leaves, but I brushed it off since it's still winter. Had I looked closer at it, my other plants wouldn't be infested with thrips again. It's so annoying since they're so persistent. I hope you already tackled them or will do so soon in your new home!

It's because it's too toxic and harmful to pollinators and aquatic organisms, and you have to treat soil and plant parts as hazardous waste after treatment as well which I guess not everyone does... But there is a much better solution, order "tripsrovkvalster" and possiby also complement with "oriusbaggar", they eat all the thrips (just keep any soaps or pesticides away from them as they would die too) and they do not cause any harm to the plant or its surroundings. Awesome video, very helpful! Just so you know, nematode is the name for a specific group of many species of worms- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nematode kind of like a really tiny earthworm. Some of them are beneficial predators, but they can have all sorts of different lifestyles and habitats from the ocean to mountains. They aren't insects (such as ladybugs) and it isn't a category for anything that eats pests, they're a specific evolutionary branch of creatures. Some even eat plants or tons of different things. Hope that is helpful!
