Plantsmans Corner

3 жыл бұрын

It's been difficult to find much to put in this week as were in that transition between calm and chaos when temperatures warm, grass goes mad, watering is almost perpetual, and the f***ing irrigation traditionally breaks down....It is comforting to know it won't be my problem after September, and there won't be another winter!.....not being selfish or anything but ii've served me time!
There are a few things you might like here, Thomases haircut...or lack of it...is still having a life of its own...but i think long hair suits him.....Elizabeth has been away (lambing and child minding)...Clara returns, and Sunniside loses more vegetation.
Hope your all is well in our viewers respective parts of this world.
Best wishes....Malcolm

The world seems normal after watching this video so thank you very much for all your effort Malcolm. I love the trilliums, and I think there were some erythroniums in one of the displays by the shop. I'm off to explore my leafmould pile which I've left for donkeysyears at the end of the garden - I didn't know leafmould was so valuable, thanks for the tip. Can I say this is the only place where I always read the comments and replies from everyone, they add such a lot of warmth. Cheers.

Thankyou Malcolm, great to see the plants are bursting into bud or bloom, despite this harsh April weather, though the April sun we are getting must help them look ‘ Perky ‘ great expression. It would be wonderful if you could do something with your old pig sty. As regards your memories of your families outside toilets, they were called Outside Netty’s in the North East, and often had a small hole at the bottom of the netty door, which you stuck your foot through, to show it was engaged. One of my dads sayings was ‘ Shining like a Netty door on a frosty morning’

I have spondylolysthesis so it was chiropractor for me too this week..digging for a beech hedge. Love the birds..Lewisham little garden means loads of cats so not many birds!! Never seen a brambling before so that was great .. First goldfinch of the year 10 mins before watching your vid so hopefully presaging spring visits! Look after yourselves... you all seem to have been in the wars one way or another. Warmth on the way....at last....

The pig house and your tale of using bramble filled moss... we tend to romanticize "the good old days"...so glad you are here to serve us up some waffles. Hope Amanda is feeling all better. I don't think it's sad that you work on model ships, I think it's fascinating. Thanks for the video... Sunniside is looking more and more beautiful every time you show it, was good to see the crew...and all the flowers and trees budding out, just wonderful. Be well.
@plantsmanscorner128
@plantsmanscorner128 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Gabi.....we do tend to romanticise stuff....I think it’s a human condition. When I was at primary school, it was a very old place.....the toilets were just an open shelter with a wall separating girls and boys....and a tin roof that was about a foot higher than the wall.....you could climb on you mates back and look down on the girls the other side (they did similar)....being small children it wasn’t in a weird way....that didn’t interest us, but what you could do if you stood back, were busting for a pee, and pulled back your little man in a certain way (most blokes will know what I mean) ....you could piddle over the top and onto the girls the other side. They could not do this. Looking back it’s funny, however I got the strap twice for doing it and when they upgraded the strap to a cane, I got that once more even though it wasn’t me that did it, which still rankles today even though I got away with it loads of times...It was terrible getting that sort of punishment, but I look back with nostalgia. ......As a very rural school it’s easy to romanticise the spring and summer days.....but mostly if I’m honest, I remember the incessant mud, cold, and ice on the inside of the windows....even at school despite a coal fire. Best wishes....Malcolm

@@margarethughes3763 that is so sad about your birds Margaret.......The pie was very nice. I wanted to be a chef when I was a youngster, but my old man wouldn’t let me. It’s lovely having them altogether at the nursery Lauren. Folk don’t always realise that you can build up a bond with the people that work for you. They have ideas of their own, lives of their own and when I finish at the end of September it will be the one thing I miss the most, but I’m sure they will go on and make their own adaptations. At least I hope so, every regeneration bring a new look while retaining some feel of the old....it’s how it works. Best wishes....Malcolm

Hi Malcolm, as of yet I don't think anybody has mentioned your model-making skills. Well, has to be said pretty impressive!! On the toilet paper, or should I say, lack of section, you really ought to read the 16th Century French writer Rabelais's pentalogy "Gargantua & Pentagruel" about the shenanigans of a giant and his son. As I remember they have an hilarious conversation about the dos & don'ts of what to and what not to use to wipe their "fundaments" (their word for it not mine). Being giants it throws up some interesting options, some of which make Izal look like a walk in the park. If I remember correctly, using a sheep was a firm favourite with them. I see that on your walks you seem to have a plenitude of that said animal if you are ever caught short. ;) Again, thanks for the effort you put in to these vids and I hope Amanda is feeling better. Oh and, what did you decide about the pond if anything at all? Warm regards Simon
@plantsmanscorner128
@plantsmanscorner128 3 жыл бұрын
I’ll ask Thomas if he’s got a spare one.....I don’t think I’ll decide on the pond for a year or so Simon......the birds and insects love it and I’m in no hurry as there are so many other things to do. I need to concentrate on getting the garden clean, weeds where I want them, paths made, the apple arbour started, and think about any hard structures or landscaping I need to do over this autumn and winter......my knowledge of French 16th century writer is limited....non existent in fact....so I’ll take your word they wiped their fundamentals with a sheep....it would clog up the sewers much worse than wet wipes or fatbergs I guess.....Best wishes.....Malcolm

No Mollie....I’ll shove one pointing in there later, and put some stone slabs over the top to keep the worst of the rain out....The ivy would have pulled them down in the end. The structure is something that was just thrown up with scrap stone, just for the pig. It really is t that lovely, but certainly historically interesting inasmuch as many villagers shared a pig and fed it all the rubbish.....sorry, left overs scraps, and anything they could find. Thomas and his family had a few last year for much the same reason......he’s still got them....just in the freezer now. Best wishes....Malcolm

@@plantsmanscorner128 I'm looking forward to seeing it. Sunnydale is beautiful already and you're a complete wizard so...... As for the pigs, everybody rural had them here too until it was made illegal. People felt it was cruel to bop the pig on the head to knock him out and then kill him fast. So now pigs are taken to the abattoir and boped on the head and then killed. For me I think the important thing is the pigs have a decent life while they have it, and I think the pigs who lived in those little stone houses were as happy as a pig is shi!. ;)

Hi, could someone tell Thomas he looks better with his long hair -it's an asset, so might as well use it, I think. Not sure about the headband though.....

I think it looks nice personally Mary......I think it’s just the way he wears the headband that’s odd....I used to wear one as a youngster.....but my hair was well a foot or two long. Best wishes....Malcolm

@@plantsmanscorner128 Hi Malcolm, thanks for the reply. We are enjoying your very informative videos. Unfortunately though, my husband tried your method when potting on of tamping down the pot again and again to settle the soil, but it was on a greenhouse staging platform and it collapsed onto his precious garlic plants! No great harm done though.

I think it’s my accent Bill......it’s ‘skip ferret’......Someone who rifles through skips to find useful stuff that people are throwing away. I used to do it all the time......best wishes...Malcolm

@@plantsmanscorner128 Thanks Malcolm. Then in days gone by I too was a 'skip ferret' also. By the way, you don't have an accent. It's the rest of us that do. Reminds me of a time I was on vacation in southern Tennessee. I'm from Ontario Canada. The gal in a restaurant impressed me with her southern drawl so I said "that's quite an accent you have". She laughed and said "I ain't got no accent. It's you with the accent". "What do you mean" I said. She laughed again and said I sounded like an Englishman. Hmmm! Never knew that before.

Oh heavens. If the limeric was read instead of the poem with that melted chocolate voice it would cease to be rude. I think instead of a poem Malcolm should choose a vulgar word of phrase to be spoken/ announced by each of them (piss artist first then poetress )and voting then decided how much more acceptable/ unacceptable it was to use depending on the delivery. I propose, due to the larch, in the vid - "sodding hell, look at the length of that stiffy Thomas is holding".
