I started my cuttings in the springtime.. In May i think.. at that time of the year it's not overly humid.. but that's why i put the cuttings into a baggie to keep in the humidity. I had them close to a window that had morning sun. make sure they are shaded from the hot afternoon sun. The trick to success is to not use wood that's tool old, make sure the cuttings are kept moist and not soggy. and the temps between 18 - 22 C

To be honest for the most part i have not really noticed my soil... and when i do see that i like a certain soil i can't remember what i used... and your right some do dry out REALLY fast and some never seem to dry out... i will not buy miracle grow soil for that reason... it stays soaking wet for many days at a time... and i find i get rot issues.. maybe i will take more notice of my soild... and notes. :)

Congrats at not killing it :) lol.. Hibiscus indoors over our Canadian winters isn't a glamorous job. More a labour of love :) The trick is to give your plant as much light as possible. turn your plant 1/4 turn every now and then. water the plant well and then let it almost dry before you water again. don't feed it unil spring. you will have flowers hopefully for another month or 2 then it will be green leafy growth. if it gets enough light it might continue to bloom. Good luck :)

Are they tropical Hibiscus? or another variety? it might say on the tag... the tropical one is Hibiscus rosa-sinensis. if they were seedlings if can take several months maybe even a year or more to bloom (The plant needs to mature) If you received cuttings then they will mature faster and it could take 3 or 4 months to produce buds. remember Lots of sun and fertilizer when actively growing helps too :)

asiatic lilies do far better when planted in the ground. the issue with your buds could have been caused by environmental stresses. i'm not sure what the light levels were or what watering techniques were used so it's hard to answer your question. the asiatics will only produce one flush of blooms per plant per year. if all of your buds are destroyed than you will sadly have to wait until next year for more blooms.

Questions are good :) I will help you out the best i can :) I am also in Canada :) Welcome to the wonderful world of hibiscus :) you should not need to prune your plant this season... i would like you said prune it before you bring it inside for the winter. maybe a few weeks before you intent to bring it inside... that way it will start sending out new lush growth and maybe flowers before it goes inside.

LOL... it's AWESOME that you thought of that idea... i wanted to do that years ago but i got side tracked :) maybe in time i will experiment with my youtube channel and try grafting my hibiscus... i think i also had 5 different colors but not near enough space. the colours will still stay true... no worries there... my old neighbour was a grafting master :) i was going to learn from him... he had an apple three with 25 varieties on it..lol.. it was crazy looking...lol

they way i transition from the bag is to slowly open the bag a small amount each day. over around a 7 day period the plant should have adjusted to the lower humidity. if you just removed the plant it went from 100% humidity to maybe 50 % or less. thats a huge shock. but since you are still seeing life :) it wont take long for them to be happy and lush again :)

Cordyline can be pruned any time. I would prune in the spring if i was doing it.. i would also plant the cut portion back into the soil and grow it on as a new plant. all you need is a really sharp knife or pruners.
@PlantzNThings

sounds like too much humidity in the bag... perhaps try opening the bag a little to allow more air circulation. It's should help... the cuttings in this video got full morning sun until 2 in the afternoon.

I don't use anything specific. as a rule I buy just any all purpose potting soil.. and i will ammend with perlite and vermiculite as nessessary as well as a slow release fertilizer

Wow! How beautiful! I've never had luck with hibiscus, and never dreamed they could propagate! I've bought one recently to try again. Of course, it's lovely now, but I was dreading pruning-and the next season. But thanks to you, I'm not afraid! I'm even going to propagate! Thank you!

first i will start with the soil i use. I use a general purpose potting soil ment for container plants and houseplants.. hibiscus like to be moist but not wet so you want something with a lot of organic matter but drains freely. is the white powder on the leabes or the branch? it sounds like a mildew problem but i'm not sure.. If your able to post a photo on my PlantznThings facebook page that would be very helpful. Is your pink plant in a pot? if so you might need to refresh the soil.
@PlantzNThings

fertilizer is a good question! over the winter when your plant is not actively growing you will not need to fertilize... however when you start noticing growth in the spring i would start to fertize... i would start with maybe 1/2 strength of the recommendation on the package... and i would fertilize every 2nd or 3rd watering... then when it's actively growing outside i would feed it every time i water with a 1/2 strength fetizer. these are heavy feeders when actively growing.
@PlantzNThings
@PlantzNThings 11 жыл бұрын
the bud drop can be common in hibiscus when they are moved to a different environment... like light levels or temps. but the white spots on your leaves.. that's a question for me as well... do you have a photo you can post to my facebook page so i can see what we're dealing with?
@PlantzNThings

Thanks! and the soil i used it usually whatever i can get my hands on at that time... and it also depends on the application.. but i don't have a specific brand that i use.. also i tend to add a little bit more perlite to the mix to aid in drainage

Hi there PlantzNThings...I have a rose mallow hibiscus and it's October here in Denver. Zone 5. I'm getting ready to cut it back but have taken what I believe are the ovaries from the spent blooms. They are dry hard and brown. I was wondering if this is the seed? Also I was wondering if I clip the leaves like you've shown us and grown them in the house all winter would that be okay? Thanks for your time and instruction.

I followed your directions for rooting hibiscus cuttings and put them in the ziplock bag. But after about 3 days, I have noticed that the stems are growing a white fuzz, which looks like mold. I opened the bag and poured out the water, I left just about 2 tablespoons of water and resealed the bag. Other than the mold, the leaves look healthy. Why did they grow mold on the stems?

Are you by the ocean? Just wondering Your cuttings are fab - did you leave the bag closed for a long period of time? At what point did you open it? I am so new with hibiscus, I wanted to check. I live in northern Canada btw, and brought my plant in for the winter this week.. I would love to be able to bring it back out next summer, with "cousin" plants along side.

When do you know if it's time to remove your hibiscus cuttings from the ziploc bag? I saw the roots extending from the 4" pot, got excited and removed it just placing it in the greenhouse. When I returned everything was shriveled & burnt. I move them outside and they seem to still be alive and are slowly growing back. How was I suppose to easily transition in the future?

I purchased 3 giant hibiscus from a tv shopping channel.They are supposed to reach heights of 4 feet and have flowers the size of dinner plates.They came as tiny little sprouts.I planted the tiny plants a few months ago.They are now about 1 1/2 feet tall, but have no buds or flowers.They seem healthy, are very greendo you have any idea when they will get buds?I live in the deep south, have very hot summers,not so cold winters,so these are in the ground, not in pots.Thank you.

I bought a hibiscus tree today, I'm already dreading the fact I don't really have a green thumb and it was a mere impulse buy. I live in Canada, it won't be going outside for a bit. Do I need to do anything with it as of yet, it has a billion buds on it, will I have to prune it all summer? Come fall ill bring it in, and is this when I cut it right back? So many questions sorry.. Lol

What an insightful reply lol. I have never used MiracleGro potting soils, mostly because of the mass of bad reviews fellow gardeners give it, but I have had an issue with the soil I usually use, called Florida Professional Grower's Mix and sold in 2 cubit ft. bags. The problem with it is that the top dries out too quickly, yet the underneath is still moist, so when when I water the top layer, it prolongs moisture in the bottom and causes issues. Garden woes I guess lol ;D
@growingdaniel
@growingdaniel 12 жыл бұрын
No problem; glad to hear you experiment with a variety of brands. Have you noticed any that work better than others? I usually have an issue with the brands I buy wherein they dry out quickly or build up salts in the soil, but that may be attributed moreso to our climate and humidity than to the brands themselves possibly. I have heard and read of the benefits of perlite; unfortunately I have not found a store here where it's sold in wholesale or in large amounts as small bags are too expensive.

hi I have a few queations. I followed your instructions on propagating my hibiscus....so far soo good...its been in the ziplock for 10days now....(1)how long do I have to keep it concealed in the zip lock before I can put them in individual pots and put them outside in direct sunlight ? or (2) do I have keep them in individual pots in a greenhouse out of direct sunlight. .. (3) is it OK if the bottom of the ziplock have water for over 3 days? I watered them every other day and ensured there was water in the bottom.of the zip lock (4) so I thought that there was too much water, so I drained the bottom of the ziplock and removed the water..and the next day one of my propagated plant had it's 2 leaves turn yellow and die...what did i do wrong? :(

SeaAndSea1 hey..yea if done the same cuttings like he did...tips and not tips...my hibiscus are about 2months now and they started budding and blooming already...they are still in the zip lock greenhouse.....and are already rooted...you should see rooting roughly 1.5months in or soo....I'm planning to keep them in the 4inch pot for 1 more month(total of 3months) before I repot them to a 6-7inch pot.....debating to separate them or keeping 2-3 together in a pot to make them a full bush when fully grown...I put 3-5 trimmings in each 4inch pot....now I know u can actually put more or pack it in...but I wanted to play it safe since it was my first time propagating hibuacus's....I'm assuming when I bought my other hibiscus bush, that 2-4 cuttings were potted together to make the hibisua bush when bought in stores.....I've seen others propagate hibiscus individually and wait a out a yr for it to grow about a foot long and they braided 4trimmings together to give it a unique look for the patio or indoor use.....hope this helped..
