I am in s.e. Texas. I have taken many cuttings from my hibiscus plants, and they grow beautifully. But, I take off all leaves except 3 or 4 around the top. I have much longer stem on all cuttings. I always scrape around the base of the stem about 2 inches long scrapes, with the shears. Roots come out all around it. I stick it directly into the ground. They will grow almost anywhere. Keep well watered every day or so while roots are forming. Have not lost a single cutting ... all colors ... even at 35 degrees at night. Works with azaleas too.

Thanks for the info, I live in South Central Arkansas, just about on the Louisiana border and I've been wondering about this and about leaving the Hibiscus outside. I brought them in last year and kept them in until Summer...Used them as Christmas trees...lol.

why not make a long cutting so you will have a tall plant right away...is it not going to root if its a long cutting?

Im in S. Florida and have new cuttings that have taken roots and have started blooming. All about 10 inches tall. Do I need to start pinching the tops now to promote extra branches for fullness? Right now they are just single branches with leaves and blooms. I see a lot of videos on pruning. Do you have a video to demonstrate "pinching" very young plants? Thanks!

My hibiscus are several years old, and by the time of the first freeze the plants have some limbs as high as 4 to 5 feet- which makes it impossible to cover. So rather than lose the plant, I trim it to about 2 feet tall. It leaves me with a lot of 3 feet whips lying around. A couple of years ago I trimmed it the night before a freeze. I left the whips laying on the ground- intending to trash them when I could get back to them. After laying on cold ground the for several days, and freezing temps, I noticed that the whips still had green leaves. So rather than throw them in the trash, I stuck them in 5 gallon buckets of water- from a left over hydroponic set up that I grew tomatoes in. I left the whips in the bucket over the entire winter, and they survived! Don’t know if the water held enough heat to create a micro-climate- 🤷🏻‍♂️. But at any rate without any provision whatsoever, (no topping, removing leaves, etc.) except water in the 5 gallon bucket, at least half the 3 foot whips survived, rooted, and bloomed in the bucket the following spring. We’re talking double red, Hibiscus Rosa-sinensis... tropical. I don’t know 🤔 if the cold preserved the cuttings. But they were replanted in containers with miracle grow soil, and are almost as big as the parent plants. I repeated the process this past December and got similar results. I am thinking about braiding some whips this year- Lot of fun! Thanks for the great video- Your way probably has a better success ratio! My way produces larger plants at the start, with half not making it. I am starting to refine the process a little more lol. I am currently trying to root some “hard to find in the store” varieties. Hawaiian Sunset, and Chinese Lanterns. 8 to 10 inch green sticks... so far so good. Fingers crossed! By the way I’m located in Charleston SC- zone 8-9. Some winter nights dip into the 20s. I just cover them with a blanket and hope for the best!

Do you need to place the cuttings in a plastic bag in a tropical climate? Or can you just leave them out in the fresh 80 degree weather until they grow. Here in Hawaii we don't really have a very big difference in temperature on a daily basis. its always between 80 to 84 degrees
