I have Tradescantia zebrina, and I've noticed they root easily just under the surface of the soil, if you bury the stems too deep they tend to rot easily, especially if there is a lot of moisture. I've thrown mine onto the compost pile and they will start growing in it. They will also start rooting in clean water in about 3 days. Once growing in soil, the more light the better. They will still grow in extremely low light conditions, but they won't look as good. You can tell if they don't have enough water, because the leaves will start to curl and look droopy, but recover well and they like conditions too dry better than too wet. With enough surface area they will do fine in moist conditions, but rot can occur. They like containers that are short and wide and dislike deep and narrow pots. They can multiply very quickly from cuttings.

Thank you for this. No one could show could show me how to do this. I live in a West Texas town where NOTHING survives the winter. I am excited to try the Wandering Jew as I grew up with this plant. The only thing that grows where I live are weeds or succulents (sometimes), haha! Thinking this beautiful plant will survive the winter here. I want to grow it outside to replace the constant weeds I have continuously. I cam from South Texas. It's all so different, like the tropical climate you talked about. Thank you so much for this!

Great demo video and I like all of the information too. FYI - I looked it up and your camera is very nice. All you have to remember is that it takes about a quarter of a second to turn on or off, when going for the close ups. Also, a small flower icon is provided to you, on your LCD display. Yes, I like the wandering cuttings! Thanks.

a trick that my grandma' taught me when i propagate plants from cuts is that in the hole that you put the cut i should put a few seeds of wheat or barley, they germinate very fast and help formatting new roots to the cut.

+Susan Alexander If it's in the same family as the one in this video it will have the same care. Lots of light (can tolerate some shade) water well and let almost dry completely between watering. It tends to be a fairly fool proof plant... if you are noticing the growth seems leggy it requires more light.

07/01/2016 Yes i spoke with you last year regarding the beautifully white and green wandering jew, please tell me what the shipping cost is from Canada to NM and see if that is cost effective or not? Every time I watch your video i quest to have a 4' starter plant from you as i am not a plant propagater😕 but I can do the root starter in water. So when you can at your earliest convenience please let me know the cost to ship. I want some of your beautiful wandering jew plant so badly. I cant find it anywhere not even online. The others are very tiny leaves (green & white) not robust as yours.

Any tips if you do break a stem? It's not completely detached, but not sure how to make sure that one doesn't die. Should I proactively propagate the broken stem while it's still healthy? This video is super helpful! Would love to see an updates on how your cuttings grew. (Know the video is a bit older!)
@PlantzNThings
@PlantzNThings 4 жыл бұрын
i would remove that piece and propagate it... once the stem kinks it limits the flow of plant juices and the area beyond the kink will eventually die if left alone

If i plant Mint with Rose Bushes will it harm the bushes? I heard it actually is an aid.
@PlantzNThings
@PlantzNThings 3 ай бұрын
To be honest I don’t know.. I’m not a rose Guy. I don’t think there would be an issue. Mint is fairly shallow rooting and the rose should have roots a little lower…. You might need to maintain the mint a bit so it doesn’t outcompete the rose. Some mint can get fairly tall

This video is amazingly helpful! Do you have any tips on propagating a chinese evergreen?
@PlantzNThings
@PlantzNThings 4 жыл бұрын
I have not propagated Chinese evergreen... but usually just chopping off the head and either rooting it in water or directly in the soil works... if the stem (trunk) is long... you can cut those into 3 or 4 inch sections (as long as there are 3 or 4 nodes ) lay them on their side in some damp soil or sphagnum moss... they should send up new growth in a few months

@PlantzNThings
@PlantzNThings 8 жыл бұрын
+Barbie Pilato Sure you can. This plant group grows easily from cuttings and will grow from the original stalk easily unless the stalk is very old and woody... but new growth can still occur. at absolute least you can take cuttings and revitalize your plant.
@mikeharrington5593
@mikeharrington5593 4 жыл бұрын
If the pot is stable/heavy enough place it in a highish position and let the plant cascade downwards. Bits often break off easily if pushed against but these can be additions to an ongoing propagation/multiplication of your favourite WJ. I let my green/white variety with purple underside dry out completely before watering again, from below. I guess they must absorb some moisture from the air because they seem impervious to drought

@tecknixia
@tecknixia 10 жыл бұрын
I've never tried rooting that variety, but I would try this... take off the lower leaves, then use a disinfectant soap and clean the plant, quickly rinse it off and then let the cutting dry for about a day. Use a glass container and wash it with disinfectant soap, rinse it, use clean water from the sink and replace the water every day, or twice a day if not too inconvenient. I would also try a glass bottle with a small neck, like a beer bottle (the small opening will hold in the humidity,) then filling the water to the first node and just let the water level drop naturally. If all goes well, the roots will sense the water and naturally grow towards it.

Interested in buying some of your more lengthier plant clippings please I've recently gotten into the wandering jew plant thing and have ordered a variety of clippings from the Ebay website, Although I prefere to put my clippings in a clear glass & water. They are rooting quite nicely and I'll soon transplant them to soil.
