A good way to show people how much a 10 dB reduction in noise floor. I just increase it by 10 dB with an additional sound source, and have them listen for a while. Then remove the increase, it is an incredible change. Then have them imagine an additional 10 dB reduction.

I do not think that increasing distortion is a valid teaching tool. We have found that decreasing distortion provides more of a revelation.

Dennis - Man you nail it every time! Noise floor, background noise, ambient noise whatever anyone wants to call it - it has to be reduced to the minimum possible level to hear the maximum from any system or source. All someone has to do to prove to themselves about hearing more detail is to stand in a very quiet and deadened room with a window or door open to people talking and then walk out to where those people are talking. While in that room its like an amplifier/clairifier to the voices. We have to run a humidifier in my living room during the cold months. Now that it is getting colder and the humidifier is running I have to turn it off so we can hear and enjoy movies and music. Yeah - it sucks! That bloody thing kills the front right speaker clarity. I really can't wait until I can afford real room treatment for my simple 5.1.2 system.

Noise is distortion. Our mission statement is to minimize distortion.
