Firstly, another nicely done video, full of handy little tips, well done Blaine. Secondly, you are 100% right about preparation and just how important it really is, any tradesman who has pride in his work would tell you the same. I've just finished a loft job myself which was a nightmare, probably the worst I've ever come across, made me laugh when I saw it and cry when I was doing it. The plaster boards looked like they had been cut with a shovel, loads of bits and pieces, weird angles and shapes where ever you looked and boards of mixed thicknesses. I think that without a lot preparation that type of job could not be done to any decent standard of finish. I worked with an old boy about 30 years ago and he always said, plastering is all about what you can get over and leave a good finish and not how quickly you can do it, that's what will always keep you in work ... how right he was. Yes, a great video shows how to approach a tricky plastering job. I love watching videos like this as you learn something every time. I am a plumber but I do renovation work on my own property so I like to learn to be able to do as many jobs for myself as I can. Over the years I have got quite good at plastering but I still like to watch videos like this to learn new tricks. I'd rather watch these than the TV ! Plastering is quite rewarding to do, always nice to get a nice smooth finish.

Great vid mate. Do you own both types of speed skim? Want to buy one but not sure which one. Theres a metal blade and just plastic version

Stick with the plastic one. the metal one is for finishing - I tried one, and it wasn't great. Plastic blade is great for flattening tho.

I recommend both but as Will said I think the plastic is the better one or of the 2. However, once you get used to using the Stainless steel Speedskim its deadly!

Hi mate! It's always Hardwall for high suction background like blocks and brickd and BG Bonding for medium to low suction backgrounds like pasteboard and existing plaster. Hope this helps matey 👍

Hi Blaine I’ve just recently started my own business and one thing I’m not sure off doing is pricing I know how to measure up and I usually say one 25 kg bag of multi finish of 2 coats is 5 m2 but dont know what to charge on the square meter ? I’m currently using the big,medium, small room format to price usually settling on the lower end of the price, is this correct, mate any tips on pricing per square meter on finish, bonding and render would be very much appreciated, thanks again

If the walls are flat, can you plaster straight over scrim tape? You don't have to add bonding over them first before plastering?

Hi blaine avid follower and on your course currently one question once bonded out how long before plaster can go on and if the difference was not that bad could you get away a magic mix for first coat and then second coat normal multi.

Hi mate! You don't need to wait over night - you can PVA as soon as the Bondings set. Just make sure you plaster onto the Bonding when it's solid because it can sometimes move under the Multi Finish if it's still soft. That's a nightmare ha!

Excellent video Ba!! , So you say scrim the board for bonding plaster, my question is if you scrim the board for the bonding do you scrim again for the plaster because now I have a wall that has bonding on it and a wall that doesn't ,so if you can imagine two plasterboard walls and scrim in the corner and ceiling one wall with bonding on it so if you're looking at it on the left wall you have plasyerboard and half the scrim showing and the back wall the scrim is under the bonding. So when I plaster both walls you have left wall plasterboard scrim then plaster, on the back wall you have plasyerboard scrim bonding no scrim plaster. I hope I have explained it ok???

I'd use Hardwall on external brickwork/ masonry backgrounds but not on plasterboard mate 👍

I've just build a soundproof wall in my bedroom, it was either that or kill the neighbours :) - The plasterboards had to fitted to metal furring bars as the wall is decoupled so I have screws running right through the middle of the boards. I don't want the screws to pop the plaster so do I scrim tape over them and then skim, Or is there a way to just fill the screw holes?

Haha sounds like you have some interesting neighbours ha! Yes, you can scrim tape which should help keep them in place...but it still might pop. It won't harm you to still scrim tape it though pal 👍

Stop beads are basically half a corner bead but 3 times the price at local shops like, wickes, B&Q, selco etc

Can you please do a video on plastering preparation for walls after thick wallpaper removal, plus paint on top of paint, on top of paint by any chance? (aka OLD walls) lol. thinking of doing mine myself but the walls are an absolute state and i definitely don't want to do anything wrong. it seems my ceilings were papered after newi-sh plasterboards were put up. (grrrr) Which makes no sense to me. I can already tell that sanding is pointless. I've also already tried sanding then. (definitely pointless) HELP!! lmao.. Advice please. I'd avoid plastering if it's not completely dry - it can sometimes move under your finish cost if it's not solid. This can cause a bit of a mess to be honest so always make sure it's hard to the touch pal 👍

I always use but joints mate - I always try to avoid tapered joints because it just makes life a bit easier. Tapered joints are only designed for tape and fill!

I understand why you're building out uneven corners & curves, but why are you filling the taper edge joints with bonding? Surely that's creating potential problems with the skim coat, as those areas dry out quicker than the plasterboard backed areas?

Had to put a length of stop bead up on my own today on a ceiling over 3m! that was not enjoyable lol have you seen people stick bead with mastics think it must be gripfill I’ve not done it myself but I’d plastered over people that have and it leaves a dark stain that shows through the plaster?

Haha yeah it can be tricky sometimes pal! I know people who do it but I've never used Gripfill - it's a bit too messy for me. I prefer no nails or something that's not as thick!

Great tips mate! Have to try stapling beads in. Notice you don't tape over board screw heads, I find it reduces head popping? Keep the videos coming no matter how long we've been doing this we can always learn new tricks! Cheers Blaine

You sick to your way of doing it mate - it's nothing to do with skill. I just prefer to prep correctly before I start Plastering which is far more effective than rushing a job and hoping you'll get it with Multi Finish. If anything you just sound like a cowboy but each to their own 👍
