Stippling is one of those painting styles where you really need to just trust the process. It's surprisingly easy to do and it looks awesome but it can be a bit scary at first.

Great video. The X scratch thing is definitely a good tip, it often looks really strange if people do crosses everywhere. Another good thing I've picked up (from Darren Latham, I think?) is doing scratches with a row of fine overlapping dots instead of doing thick lines in a single stroke, since it tends to look way more in-scale.

Have you tried to use a Dremel with a round bit and on your unpainted plastic mini gouge out bullet marks in a sprayed pattern across the chest? When doing so use odd number of bullet marks. It just looks better. 3 or 5 are good numbers.

I really enjoy your videos and approach to wargaming / painting ^^. Would love to pick your brain for a quick second. RE filming, can I ask what camera you are using for your painting / model shots? I'm guessing your shooting 4k 60? And cropping it down(the minimum focus on your lens seems really close to, fixed focal length or a zoom lens) lastly RE grading your footage do you shoot standard/flat or raw? Sorry for all the questions! Love your channel and your work is stunning

Not enough people paint on the decal's. I always think they look flat after people have finished painting the model due to a lack of shading put in the white or black areas on them. Just a small amount of grey on most decal's makes them look 100% better.

Having the lighter base would hopefully make the yellow a bit more vibrant. As it was a larger model I wanted to make sure the colour looked saturated enough.

Hey there, I have a question for you Richard. First off, this technique looks great! I like how smooth it comes across and the number of transitions it creates. Now, I am not sure if I am barking up the wrong tree, but how would you go about doing something with a predominantly green color, like for Heresy/40K Salamanders? I recently picked up a Contemptor and I've been racking my brain trying to figure out how to go about it. I've considered starting with a very dark purple and working up from there to play with color theory; I've thought about doing a sort of triad of greens to pull off the transition but at the end of the day, I am simply struggling finding a place to start. Got any suggestions?

Richard, I got a question - I've been watching you paint reds and yellows, so you would use a contrast paint or oil washes with a hue of brown. But what if I paint blues (like for Ultramarines) or greens (Sons of Horus), purples - what kind of contrast paint or oil wash would you use?

I love the effect and the skill is unquestionable. However much I appreciate this work visually I can’t justify copying the technique in my army because firstly ceramite armour wouldn’t rust and secondly, if it did, those ancient dreadnoughts are so revered I’m sure that they would be maintained in a way where rust spots and the like would be carefully mended. Silly and pedantic, I know! But I guess I’m just silly and pedantic.
@demonrich

Does stippling with these brushes mess them up at all to the point they don't drybrush the same anymore?
@SparkSovereign
@SparkSovereign 2 жыл бұрын
Paintbrushes are fundamentally consumables. Everything you do with them degrades them, but they exist to be used. Dedicated stuff like makeup brushes or hobby drybrushes will hold up reasonably well to this, but if you're worried just have a dedicated stippling brush; if it gets incredibly messed up it just gains more interesting texture!

Is there a reason why you chose brown as the undercoat? If I were to use this technique for my salamanders should I also use brown or something else?
@demonrich

The brown stops the yellow looking green. You don't need to do that for Salamanders, you can go straight on with green.

Really wish more painters would show air brush work. There really is a lack of quality airbrush channels.
@nasigoring1525
@nasigoring1525 2 жыл бұрын
This is legit just “manual airbrushing”. Airbrushing is taking very watered down painted, atomising it in to tiny transparent dots using air. You are just applying the transparent dots with stippling and a brush instead of air and… gravity I guess.

@@nasigoring1525 Maybe dealing with the expense and faff isnt wanted? Personally for me the fact that airbrushing makes things easier is why im less interested in airbrushed models. A lot less skill involved. As your comment proves.
@nasigoring1525
@nasigoring1525 2 жыл бұрын
@@jamesmaybrick6750 time is not = to skill. My comment doesn't relate to skill at all, just process, which is slower with the brush. There is just as much expense and "faff" (related to the process) in the method shown here. Go buy a set of artis opus brushes, it'll set you back almost as much as a cheap airbrush and compressor. Then do a few models with this method and see how long the brushes last.
@jamesmaybrick6750
@jamesmaybrick6750 2 жыл бұрын
@@nasigoring1525 I disagree. Time valuable. Skill is impressive. Anyone can knock up some airbrushed mass produced stuff. So what. To manually pain something like this dread is actually an acheivement. I wouldnt have spent a valuable hour of my life watching some video of a dude using an airbrush.
@nasigoring1525
@nasigoring1525 2 жыл бұрын
@@jamesmaybrick6750 Again, time does not equate to skill, you keep conflating the two. There are highly, highly skillful things people can do with an airbrush. Pain is an achievement. The fact that something took you a long time and that time was painful or dull doesn't necessarily make the finished product look any better. And your time is not that valuable if you throw it away spending more time on a process like this than a different, faster process for the same or worse result.
